NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Google sold Motorola to Lenovo for $2.9 million yesterday. Google originally acquired Motorola in 2012 for $12.5 billion, hoping to compete with Apple in the mobile market. Google only recently released its first smartphone from the manufacturer, the MotoX, which flopped. Even with the $7.2 billion loss, Google’s stock increased to $1,136 a share.

NFL announced a new web TV service yesterday, NFL Now, a multimedia individual football team experience for fans. The ad-supported service will include original content, game highlights and material from the league’s 32 teams, the NFL Network, NFL.com and NFL Films. Vice President of Yahoo Global Media & Head of Yahoo Sports Ken Fuchs (Yahoo is a content partner for the NFL’s new service) told Cynopsis, “With the type of experience created around the NFL all year-round, the thought of adding that to the experience we’ve created across different platforms through sports was really enticing.”

Second-screen app Viggle acquired Dijit Media, the company behind the NextGuide personalized TV guide app. Viggle, an app that rewards users for watching TV, will give points for real-world products by setting reminders for TV shows on NextGuide. Viggle has more than 475,000 monthly active users as of September according to AP, and NextGuide had 160,000 active monthly users.

CONTENT MEDIA

Hulu is offering U.S. viewers the Pokemon Origins series, with Hulu throwing in extra content including movies and other titles from the Japanese animated franchise. The show, which will live in Hulu Kids, will be available at first in English and in Spanish soon after. Hulu Plus subscribers, of course, will get access to even more material.

Crackle announced that the Jerry Seinfeld series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee hit 25 million streams yesterday. The series took the title for the number one original series on Crackle, and will continue in its fourth season with six new episodes on all of its platforms and comediansincarsgettingcoffee.com.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

As Facebook’s shares skyrocketed 16 percent to $62 yesterday, the social site also announced its newest mobile app Paper, which is another way to browse the Newsfeed. The New York Times says the app ditches buttons and menus, and instead articles, images and posts are presented in full screen to be sifted through when a user swipes or pinches the screen. Facebook’s algorithms, a group of actual editors and partners like CNN, National Geographic and the NYT, will select stories seen on the app. Surprise twist: there will be no ads.

Twitter updated its site to help users easily sort through Tweets by filtering results with categories like people, photos, location, videos and news.

Viacom‘s Logo TV unveiled its TV Everywhere app, which features a library of LGBT films, with co-viewing content tied to its network programming. The app can be downloaded for free for iPhones and iPads, and users can watch the first episode of the newest season of RuPaul’s Drag Race a week before its TV premiere on Feb. 17.

Numbeez is a new stat-tracking app for iOS that acts like Pinterest for numbers.Whether it is sports scores, stocks, weather, or the historical prices of advertising during the Super Bowl, Numbeez curates data in fun dashboards that can be shared with others and update in realtime.We’re tracking Super Bowl teaser ad viewership on the Cynopsis board  just download the app and search ‘Cynopsis.’

NBCUniversal and Comcast announced a partnership to launch NBCU+ Powered by Comcast, a service to sell targeted ads to VOD users giving advertisers anonymized audience data. “As our advertising partners are being challenged to improve the effectiveness of their campaigns, our ability to optimize and target our media beyond traditional demographics with scale is a unique offering that NBCUniversal can now provide,” said Linda Yaccarino, president, advertising sales, NBCUniversal.Pricing for the product hasn’t been determined.

Rovi has special plans in anticipation of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, offering metadata that will include game descriptions, athlete profiles, event history, facts and multimedia content to its video customers. At the end of Olympics, Rovi plans to have created more than 150 athlete profiles, and covered 95 different teams in ten different languages for networks in more than 20 countries.

RESEARCH

Research and marketing firm Leger (formerly The Research Intelligence Group) released a new survey focused on the Super Bowl, and taken by 1,000 online respondents last week. Findings included:

  • Of the 71 percent that plan to watch the big game, one-quarter are more interested in the commercials than the game.
  • Half plan to use social media while watching: Three-quarters of those were in the 18-29 age group, while two-thirds were in the 30-39 age group.
  • 52 percent of non-whites will use social media compared to 42 percent of those who are white users.
  • One-quarter of respondents predict Budweiser will have the funniest and overall best ad.
  • While one-tenth predict GoDaddy.com will have the worst ad.

Video game developer Phoenix Online Studios announced the promotion of Scott Steinberg to General Manager. Steinberg’s background includes 15 years in the game publishing industry with Atari, Microids and Dreamcatcher.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY

You know what would make sportscasting better by double? If it were in song! Well, that’s what the winners of the Fox Sports Digital Video Fest thought. Fox Sports and YouTube Space LA teamed up for a three-day competition between 12 U.S. YouTube channels pining to create a new sports series. The winning video from AVByte YT channel made This Week in Sports into a one-minute musical, and received a deal that will put the channel’s content creation on the Fox Sports YT channel and site.
