IN THE NEWS

Viewer voting on American Idol is getting a tweak. FremantleMedia, 19 Entertainment/CORE Media Group and Fox have announced partnerships with Google and Facebook that will give fans new interactive on-air and online experiences. Google is powering an online voting platform that allows fans to cast votes for their favorite Idol finalists directly from Google Search; Facebook will support visual, on-air voting progress updates based on real-time East Coast voting data during select live shows, giving at-home viewers a look at how finalists are faring.

Sundance Channel will rebrand as SundanceTV in February, with a new logo and look designed to stand out in the multi-platform TV ecosystem. The network will also reposition itself in the digital space with a new website, www.sundance.tv.

CBS revealed the 11 all-star teams returning for another sprint around the globe and the chance to win $1 million on the new season of The Amazing Race, premiering Sunday, February 23 at 8p. The returnees include fan favorites The Globetrotters, The Cowboys, Dave and Connor, and Brendon and Rachel. Season 25 will also include a dramatic twist: one team won’t make it to the starting line.

Everybody Loves Raymond will be the 2014 television inductee into the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame, honored at the 2014 NAB Show Television Luncheon on April 7 in Las Vegas. Cast members expected to attend include Ray Romano, Patricia Heaton, Doris Roberts, Brad Garrett and Monica Horan, along with the show’s creator, Phil Rosenthal.

Nick Davatzes, chief executive officer emeritus, A+E Networks, will receive the 2014 Bresnan Ethics in Business Award at the Cable Hall of Fame Celebration on April 29 in LA. “Nick has been at the forefront of so many innovations to the cable industry,” said Glenn Britt, chairman and CEO (Retired), Time Warner Cable, and chairman of the Bresnan Award selection committee. “He has been a respected leader in our industry for many years, and is dedicated to contributing to his community through numerous philanthropic activities.”

Univision has acquired exclusive rights to El Varon de la Droga, a drama inspired by the true-life exploits of powerful drug dealer Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman. The  series, focusing on the inner workings and politics of the drug trafficking underworld courtesy of a script by former cartel member turned author Andres Lopez, will air in 2014 on its UniMas channel.

NATPE ROUNDUP

New Yorkers weren’t the only ones in Miami happy to be out of the cold. Craig Ferguson, charming the crowd at a poolside Debmar-Mercury party to promote Celebrity Name Game, the upcoming pop culture game show he’s hosting, said NATPE was supposed to be a quick pit stop on the way to Canada, but a sinus infection derailed that plan. “My doctor said the best way to make it worse would be to fly to Canada,” said the Late Late Show host. “I’m glad to be here!”

“It’s been an active market,” said Lionsgate‘s Jim Packer, president, worldwide TV and digital distribution. Calling Adrien Brody‘s performance “fantastic” in Houdini, set for History in the U.S., Packer said the mini-series has been sold “in a number of territories.” But TV isn’t all that’s keeping him busy. “I now spend 60 percent of my time doing digital,” shared the exec.

Kevin Conroy, president, Univision interactive and enterprise development, called the market “an engaging environment. I am encouraged by the degree to which people are focusing on digital as a piece of the puzzle.” The conversation should not be about one platform versus another, said Conroy, but “giving people the most content possible, and letting them choose how to watch.”

For Red Touch Media‘s Wayne Scholes, NATPE is about making connections and having fun. “We don’t take ourselves too seriously,” said the CEO, whose booth offered candy and charging stations. “We have a great time – catching up with old friends and making new ones. I think these markets go so much better when you’re lighthearted and relaxed.”

Asked to name his biggest competitor, Simulmedia SVP, business development Pravin Chandiramani said, “The status quo – demographic and gender-based metrics.” His company’s new agreement with Fourth Wall, he told Cynopsis, “will enable us to match set top box data to purchase data. We’re moving past demos to purchase-driven audience targeting.” As for NATPE, Chandiramani said he sees “buzz in the markets. It’s very heartening to see this concerted effort in the community.”

Measurement company Rentrak is demonstrating its local market overnight ratings service during the conference. The new service reports viewing information hours after airing, allowing clients to evaluate program ratings for local television stations and cable channels in near-real-time.
