NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Film distribution company Screen Media Ventures announced a deal with Troma Entertainment for licensing rights to 40 films to include on its streaming platforms Popcornflix, FrightPix and Popcornflix Comedy. SMV content can be viewed for free on Roku, Xbox, iOS and Android free apps as well as on the desktop.

APPS + MOBILE GAMING

MTV Insights published an online study on the app Snapchat, surveying millennials ages 15-24 and how they use the photo-messaging app.

  • Snapchats tend to be selfies or photos of “random” things paired to random captions. Artistic and planned photos are left to Instagram, which is perceived as more “official.”
  • There’s etiquette for Snapchats, including how many Snaps are appropriate to send to a crush (no more than five/day) and the acceptable waiting times before opening a Snap.
  • What people like most about the app is that it’s “face-to-face” interaction and snapchat selfies made the surveyed group “feel like you’re just talking to someone.” However, users say they like the distance to it as well.

Vine celebrated its first year on Friday by compiling the year’s best six-second clips at vine.co/yearonvine and they show an impressive range of uses. Vine hit 40 million users by the end of last summer, and brands including Trident gum and Dunkin Donuts have already partnered with the app for ad campaigns (even after Instagram launched its 15-second video competition).

CONTENT MEDIA

Counterprogramming with bite: Animal Planet is getting into the spirit for the big game with the 10th year of Puppy Bowl X and the L!VE Puppy Cam. The pups featured in the 24/7 video at APL.TV from the Washington Animal Rescue League will predict whether Seattle or Denver will win the Super Bowl by choosing different shaped football treats. Check it out on Puppy Cam. The Puppy Bowl airs on Feb. 2 from 3-5 p.m. ET. Not to be outdone, The Hallmark Channel is presenting its first Kitten Bowl on February 2nd at 12 noon, with the players up for adoptionfrom the North Shore Animal League and the Last Hope Animal Rescue. It’s going to be a catfight.

RESEARCH

Facebook and Pinterest’s site referral traffic increased in Q4 2013, while Twitter fell flat, according to a recent Shareaholic study (it tracks 250 million users in its network of 200,000 publishers). Facebook’s traffic grew from 10.37 percent in September to 15.44 percent in December, and Pinterest grew in the same period from 3.68 percent to 4.79 percent. Twitter dipped from 1.17 to 1.12. Sites with less than one percent change in shares but still worth noting, are Google+ and StumbleUpon. Those that saw a slight decline: LinkedIn, Reddit and YouTube.

TECHNOLOGY

As Steve Ballmer makes his exit, Microsoft posted record revenues of $24.5 billion in December 2013, which was more than the $23.7 billion that analysts had predicted, according to Bloomberg. The tech giant sold 3.9 million Xbox One systems and 7.4 million Xbox consoles overall (taking the top spot over PS4, which reigned in November). Microsoft apparently has the mojo in mobile devices; the Surface 2 tablet brought in $893 million revenue for the company. No word on Ballmer’s replacement.

Apple is planning to roll out two new smartphones with larger screens than 4.5 or five inches. The Wall Street Journal reported the new smartphones will have similar metal casing to the iPhone 5S (which currently stand at four inches), and should hit shelves in the second half of the year. Samsung already offers the Galaxy Note 3 with a 5.7-inch screen.
