AOL acquired Gravity, a company that helps web users personalize their online and social searches through filters, for $83 million yesterday. Gravity’s tools will help tailor content on AOL sites like The Huffington Post, so that advertisers can better target consumers.
Electric Dance Music’s (EDM) mega DJ Tiesto has signed with multi-channel network Base79 to be its new channel partner. Base79 will manage Tiesto’s YouTube channel, which has more than 1.2 million subscribers. The partnership includes Tiesto’s record label’s channel Musical Freedom (150,000 subscribers). Tiesto just finished the second season of web series In The Booth.
MTV News and VH1 News announced they are live streaming The 56th Annual Grammy Awards pre-show special on Jan. 26 from 3-8 p.m. The show will be available on MTV.com, VH1.com, the MTV Xbox app, and for MTV apps on iOS and android smartphones and tablets. Editorial teams from MTV and VH1 will be covering the events all day on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

Time Warner Cable added A+E networks apps (A&E, History and Lifetime) as part of its TV Everywhere program. TWC customers will be able to watch full episodes from the networks through the app available for iOS, Android and desktops after verifying their TWC subscription.
Online video advertising platform LiveRail is seeing triple the demand for online video ads in any given day, thanks to the Super Bowl. What’s especially interesting is that the period includes the 12 hours following the game. “One can infer that advertisers know that they have to reinforce the message for it to stick with audiences, and that it’s part of an integrated campaign that combines a broadcast with online. Digital Video and programmatic buying is a perfect channel for this strategy,” LiveRail’s Vice President of Demand Sales Troels Smit told Cynopsis. Smit is seeing a similar trend for the upcoming Winter Olympics. LiveRail served 3.6 billion ads in December 2013 alone according to comScore; clients include Univision, Machinima, CBS Interactive and Sony Pictures.
People may be keen on multitasking throughout the day, but not when they’re watching TV, according to TiVo’s latest 2013 Social Media and Multitasking Survey. Key findings:
- 76 percent focused their attention primarily on the TV while a program was on. Here’s what else they were doing: web browsing (69 percent), cooking (48 percent) or chatting online (23 percent).
- When it comes to second screens, 14 percent of online activity occurs immediately following a program and 32 percent search for TV related content during the following week.
- Of TiVo users, 61 percent want to turn to social networks to chat about a TV program opposed to open web forums, and 55 percent of non-TiVo users do the same.
- 68 percent of TiVo users noticed TV hashtags, and of those people, 63 percent didn’t like seeing it while watching TV.
NBCUniversal Television and New Media Distribution, U.S. & Canada announced Bruce Casino as the new Executive Vice President of the division; he was Senior Vice President since 2008.
Hayley Dickson has been promoted to Vice President of Acquisitions for the content distributor network, FreemantleMedia International. She was formerly FreemantleMedia’s Director of Television Acquisitions and Development.
Multiscreen video platform Clearleap has hired John Smith as the company’s new Vice President of New Market Development. Smith was most recently Senior Vice President of North American Sales at Vubiquity.
A+E’s FYI named both Liz Fine and James Bolosh as Vice Presidents of Development and Programming. Previously, Fine was Co-Executive Producer for Atlas Media Corp and Left/Right. Bolosh’s previous experience includes MTV, HGTV, and CNBC.
Social video education platform CreativeLIVE has hired Ryan Vance as Vice President of Content. Vance was most recently Senior Vice President of Programming Development for Discovery Digital Networks.

The first black woman cast member and newest addition to Saturday Night Live, Sasheer Zamata, is keeping busy since her debut on the show last weekend.
