Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 23, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
ESPN is out with its early 2014 ACC schedule, announcing details for its Labor Day prime-time telecast, as well as Thursday and Friday games. On Monday, Sept. 1, at 8p, the network will feature Louisville playing its first game as a member of the ACC and Miami (Fla.). ESPN’s Thursday night series, ESPN College Football Primetime, will include five ACC matchups this year, including two featuring Virginia Tech (Oct. 16 and Oct. 23). Other telecasts will see defending champ Florida State will be featured against Louisville on Oct. 30, Clemson/Wake Forest on Nov. 6 and North Carolina/Duke on Nov. 20. ESPN networks will also carry three Friday telecasts involving the ACC, including Pittsburgh/Boston College on Sept. 5, Louisville/Syracuse on Oct. 3 and Virginia at Virginia Tech on the Friday after Thanksgiving.
The Dodgers formally unveiled SportsNet LA, the new local TV home of the team and slated to launch on Feb. 25, the night before the club’s first Spring Training game. Programming will include live and classic games, live studio shows, and original programs, with talent that includes Orel Hershiser, Nomar Garciaparra, Charley Steiner, Jerry Hairston, Alanna Rizzo and John Hartung. Vin Scully will return for an unprecedented 65th season to call all Dodger home games and road games in California and Arizona, while Steiner and Hershiser will call the rest. Garciaparra and Hairston will contribute to SportsNet LA’s pre- and post-game coverage, both live from the stadium and from the SportsNet LA studio.
NBC Sports Group locked in deals with Marty Snider and Kelli Stavast, who to contribute to the company’s upcoming NASCAR studio and live race coverage on NBC and NBCSN. Both will operate out of Charlotte and follow other recent announcements of lead race announcer Rick Allen and analysts Jeff Burton and Steve Letarte. In addition to his NASCAR duties, Snider will continue as lead pit reporter on NBC’s IndyCar coverage.
NBC Sports also announced that over 1 million viewers tuned in to Sunday’s Chelsea/Manchester United match on NBCSN, marking an all-time high for the network and the second most-watched Premier League game of all-time on U.S. cable television. The game averaged 1.019 million viewers on NBCSN.
On to the Super Bowl. NFL Network is slating a record 86 hours of live coverage ahead of the game, and over 140 overall, utilizing 12 sets from eight locations. The channel will tap a roster of 40 on-air personalities with coverage starting Sunday as the network coverage the arrivals of the Broncos and Seahawks. On the big day, NFL Network will offer 12.5 hours of pregame and postgame coverage, including on-location live telecasts of original shows such as NFL Total Access and Super Bowl Live, special Super Bowl-related programming such as The Rich Eisen Super Bowl Special, M&M and Let’s Go Primetime, starting with NFL GameDay First at 7a.
More musical talent lined up for Super Bowl festivities. The league announced that Phillip Phillips and The Band Perry will perform at the NFL Tailgate Party with parts of their performances set to air on the FOX Super Bowl Sunday pregame show. In addition, the NFL announced the cast of Broadway’s Jersey Boys and Rock of Ages will also perform at the party.

Meanwhile, NBCSN will feature both Richard Sherman and Michael Crabtree on tonight’s episode of NFL Turning Point at 10p. Host Dan Patrick will review last week’s AFC and NFC Championship Games, with the added bonus of the rivals both being wired during their game.
Spike Lee is the newest member of the SiriusXM roster, where the famed Knicks fan will host a show exclusively on the new SiriusXM NBA Radio, channel 217. Spike Lee’s Best Seat in the House will debut on Thursday, January 30 at 7p with the one-hour show running every other week featuring Lee discussing headline stories from the NBA and talking with personalities from the worlds of Basketball and Entertainment. Lee will also host a non-sports show airing every other week offering long-form interviews with personalities from entertainment, politics, music and more.

ESPN updated its NBA schedule, swapping out Pistons/Magic on Feb. 5 for Trail Blazers/Knicks. On March 5, the network will now showcase Mavericks/Nuggets instead of Knicks/Timberwolves.
With Masashiro Tanaka making headlines a the newest member of the Yankees, ONE World Sports will present tonight at 7p, in its entirety, an encore of a Nippon Professional Baseball game from June 9 that featured Masashiro Tanaka pitching against the Yomiuri Giants. In the game, Tanaka threw seven scoreless innings and won his eighth game of the season on his way to posting a 24-0 record for NPB’s Rakuten Golden Eagles.
The San Francisco 49ers announced that Tim Ryan will serve as the new color analyst for the team’s official radio broadcast alongside Voice of the 49ers Ted Robinson. Ryan has served as the color analyst for the 49ers preseason television broadcast each of the past three seasons, and is recognized nationally for his current role as a Westwood One Radio analyst.

ESPN laid out its roster of sponsors for X Games Aspen 2014, taking place on Jan. 23-26 with live coverage on ESPN and ABC. New sponsors include Monster Energy, the official energy drink sponsor of X Games Aspen, as well as Harley-Davidson, Cub Cadet, Gildan and Phunkshun Wear Facemasks. Returning sponsors include America’s Navy, GoPro, Jeep, Repreve, Skype, Loctite, Oakley and Polaris. Elements featured as part of sponsor packages include on-site activations as well as rights to official marks and logos. Additionally, some sponsors receive a media presence during games telecasts, prominent positions across digital and social X Games platforms during the event along with VIP hospitality experiences on site. In addition, the company announced that Aspen/Snowmass will remain the X Games host city through 2019.
ESPN also announced that its seventh Jimmy V Week for Cancer Research set a fundraising record, generating more than $1.8 million in contributions for The V Foundation for Cancer Research in December. In seven years, Jimmy V Week has generated $8,246,000 in total contributions for the organization.
The PGA of America announced that Ralph Lauren Corporation will serve as the Official Outfitter for the 2014 United States Ryder Cup Team. Ralph Lauren and 2014 U.S. Ryder Cup Team Captain Tom Watson will design the official uniforms to be worn by Team USA during the week of the 40(th) Ryder Cup, which takes place Sept. 23-28.
Chevrolet turned to Detroit’s North American International Auto Show to unveil its brand-new Corvette Z06 production car and its C7.R race car, which will make its competition debut in the Rolex 24 At Daytona. Race organizers also announced that Ford is utilizing its 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine to power race cars in the TUDOR Championship’s premier Prototype class while Mazda will use its two Prototype class cars to develop its SkyActive Diesel engine technology, marking the only diesel-powered race cars currently competing in the TUDOR Championship.
The New York Rangers announced a multi-year marketing partnership with Kumon North America that makes the after-school learning program the first-ever Official Learning Center of the Rangers. The agreement delivers Kumon with premier brand integration at Madison Square Garden during Rangers games and designates Kumon as a partner of the Rangers youth hockey camps. As part of the deal, Kumon will have two branded dasherboards at The Garden that will also be visible to Rangers fans watching at home on MSG Network.

Who needs authentication? FOX Sports GO will now offer a live stream of Super Bowl XLVIII to all users on Sunday, February 2 as part of a special preview designed to showcase the app and its content. The preview will span midnight on Feb. 2 through 3a on Feb. 3. The platform will actually offer two separate live streams of Super Bowl XLVIII: the FOX Sports telecast in English and the FOX Deportes telecast in Spanish. Of course, the live stream of Super Bowl XLVIII will be available on iPads but not on phones due to league restrictions.
LockerDome locked in a new strategic partnership with production and editorial team Thrive Sports, for a new campaign, dubbed #THRIVERINGSTRUE. The partnership will seek to connect fans and athletes through engaging, inspirational and highly sharable videos, photos and stories for the upcoming Winter Games. Content will live within each athletes’ LockerDome page where it will be divided up in specially built out Lockers. Athletes are set to include Sasha Cohen as well as a slate of 2014 Olympians.
