Cynopsis: DIGITAL
01.23.14

Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 23, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

As expected, the Netflix news was good yesterday. The service added 2.33 million subscribers during Q4, for 31.71 million total. Net profit shook out at 79 cents per share, beating expectations of 64 cents. Revenue rose to $1.2 billion from $945 million year over year.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

AOL signed a deal with YouTube multi-channel network MiTu to syndicate content to platforms including the The Huffington Post, AOL On, and Voces. MiTu reports a global audience of 45 million unique viewers per month and more than 200 million video views.

.GIFs, those mini-animated clips that have taken over the Internet in the past year, now has its own award, called the .GIFY. The idea comes from CP+B LA, which calls the medium a “social commentary and [an] art form.” Judges include pros from Tumblr, Gawker, BuzzFeed and Mashable, and nominated categories count Can’t Look Away, Cats, Reaction, Film+TV and GIF of the Year among them. Anyone can vote at the .GIFY site. Winners will be announced later this month.

YouTube sports content creators Brodie Smith and Shot Science Basketball have signed on as original channel partners with The Whistle Network. Brodie Smith is a professional ultimate Frisbee player, and the Shot Science Basketball channel has more than 100,000 subscribers and 14 million views. The Whistle Network launched on YouTube this month, and already has mobile apps and a Microsoft Xbox Live video channel.

CONTENT MEDIA

In an increasingly bitter carriage dispute, The Weather Channel chairman and CEO David Kenny took another jab at DirecTV. With TWC off DirecTV since midnight January 14, Kenny wrote an open letter to DirecTV board members – appearing in an ad in newspapers Wednesday – urging the service to let the 90,000 DirecTV subscribers Kenny says have pledged to switch providers “vote with their feet” by waiving termination fees of $200-$400. Responded a spokesperson for DirecTV, “The Weather Channel is so used to dramatizing the weather, they may have lost all sense of reality.”

Discovery Digital Networks’ Animalist premiered a new channel and show yesterday called Furrocious. YouTube’s Mike Flazone (who has more than 100,000 subscribers) will host the show, where he will demonstrate just how dangerous some of the worlds cutest animals can be. New episodes will be available every Wednesday on the channel.

British TV streaming service Acorn TV announced it has tripled subscribers, and hit four million visitors in the last six months. The premiere of Doc Martin, Series 6 in fall 2013 set a new record for the service with 250,000 views during its eight-week debut. Acorn TV series can be viewed at www.Acorn.TV and on its Roku channel.

Horror film network FearNet.com is bringing a new film to its online library every week from now through March 27. Called The Vault, the series will feature ten free movies from top horror directors such as Dario Argento (Dracula) and George Romero (Night of the Living Dead).

The BBC is taking on NBC’s latest acquisition NowThisNews, by trying out Instagram with a new 15-second news round-up called Instafax for the next month.

CBS.com will live-stream the Grammy Awards Pre-Telecast Ceremony this Sunday from 1-3:30 p.m. on Grammy.com/live. The show will be hosted by Cyndi Lauper, and will be available online for a month. The 56th Grammy Awards will air on Jan. 26 on CBS at 5 p.m.

Buzz60 production company Zazoom Video is opening a Los Angeles office, headed up by COO Steve Bradbury. “It’s a logical progression for a media company,” Bradbury told Cynopsis exclusively. “For a year now, we’ve been doing custom co-branded on-demand content with Yahoo [in LA]. “And we produce custom content for blinkx, which is in San Francisco; they also distribute Buzz60 content.” In addition, Bradbury points out, “Not everyone has the ability to create news and information-based content. To tell a story journalistically, with quality and speed, is something we can deliver to companies that aren’t east coast based.”

APPS + MOBILE GAMING

Kia released a second-screen app for the Australian Open Tennis Men’s Final fans. During the games, Kia commercials will feature six different swings from pro Sam Groth; those on the app can return the swing and get a feel for its speed. Users will be entered in the Kia Cerato Koup Turbo giveaway with every swing they take. The winner will be announced at the conclusion of the tournament on Jan. 26.

ADVERTISING

Digital advertising agency DoubleVerify is launching a fraud-free ad impression viewability technology called IQ Viewability+. The technology helps eliminate recording fake impressions of ad campaigns, which include copyright infringement, hidden ads, stacked ads, masked URLS and bot fraud. “With digital ad fraud gaining in sophistication and scale, advertisers need assurances that they’re not paying for phony ads that never reached their intended customers,” said DoubleVerify CEO Wayne Gattinella.

Viacom launched a new ad sales unit yesterday offering integrated marketing and creative content solutions. Viacom Velocity Integrated Marketing will plan and execute campaigns for Viacom’s networks and their extensions and social media; its Creative Content Solutions branch will produce custom content with MTV, Comedy Central, VH1, CMT, Logo, Spike TV and TV Land for TV, digital platforms and cross-network campaigns.

Multimedia outdoor network ParksByNature kicked off a national digital campaign for Post Foods’ Grape-Nuts Fit brand called What’s Your Mountain? The campaign will encourage people to stay active on Pocket Ranger‘s site and apps.

MOBILE ADVERTISING

“What’s not supposed to be happening in mobile keeps happening,” BuzzFeed’s CEO Jonah Peretti said about the growth in mobile advertising at the AdExchanger’s Industry Preview conference this week. Mobile ads are the better platform for BuzzFeed, according to Peretti, which he says account for half of the site’s traffic, including video views. He also said that Pinterest was a major contributor to BF views, and suggested advertisers drop infographics and slideshows and instead experiment with quizzes. BuzzFeed’s latest quizzicle, Which City Should You Live In? brought in more than 20 million views in just five days.

Now that Twitter‘s revealed that Hispanic, Black and Asian American demographics make up 41% of its users, The Wall Street Journal reports that the public company is taking the findings to ad agencies to generate revenue. The same group of ethnicities accounts for 34 percent of Facebook users and just 33 percent of all Internet users, according to the Pew Research Center’s Internet and the American Life.

EXEC MOVES

Tremor Video has hired Andrew Posen as the new Senior Director of Investor Relations. Posen was previously the Director of Investor Relations at AppNexus.

Telemundo Media has promoted Allen Infeld to Vice President of Client Development from Director of Client Development.

The Oxford Dictionary named Selfie the 2013 Word of the Year, and now Dove is adding the movement into its beauty regimen, by debuting a seven-minute short film called Selfie at the Sundance Film Festival this week. The company released research with the film, which shows that 63 percent of women believe social media influences the definition of beauty more than print, film or music.
