Twitter is hitting the small screen for a new TV series based on the book Hatching Twitter: A True Story of Money, Power, Friendship and Betrayal. Lionsgate Television, arm of the film distributor behind The Hunger Games and Twilight, nabbed the rights to the book for the future series. The New York Times bestseller was written by Nick Bilton, and was released earlier this year.
Defy Media’s digital new entertainment brand, Clevver, announced a two-year contract to become the Critic Choice Movie Award’s first digital partner. Clevver will power the audience’s vote for the Hottest Star of the Year award during the CCMA’s in 2014 and 2015. Additionally, Clevver will take part in the red carpet and post-show coverage by providing videos, photos and social media updates. The ceremony will be promoted across Clevver brands, which receive 22 million unique visitors every month along with its current 2.6 million social media followers.
Internet media platform Blinkx is teaming up with web video content producer, REV New Media, to bring sports clips and cooking tips to Blinkx users. From the deal, Blinkx will host two new channels from REV, The Fumble and The Savory. REV is already known for providing channels Hollyscoop, ModaMob and Stereotude for Blinkx, which has 1,100 partners and over 35 million hours of video and audio content.
YouTube’s Above Average channel debuted a new show yesterday from SNL writers Paula Pell and James Anderson, called Hudson Valley Ballers. The show will include six episodes following the writers playing versions of themselves, and in the first and last episode Paul Rudd and Saturday Night Live actress Kate McKinnon will make a guest appearance.
Street culture site Mass Appeal launched an animated digital series called What The Hec? exclusively on Instagram, yesterday. The videos focus on hip hop and culture trends, and will not be appearing on Mass Appeal’s YouTube channel or site.
The New York Times Magazine annual The Lives They Lived issue is releasing documentary shorts as companion pieces. NYT has hired five filmmakers to create five shorts based on people who died in 2013. The first is called Naturally, J.J. Cale, by previous NYT doc filmmaker Drew Christie. The last mini doc will be released on Dec. 26, and all of them can be seen on NYT.com’s Opinion Pages.
Popcornflix, the free movie-streaming channel from Screen Media Ventures, announced it has crossed the five million viewer download mark. Popcornflix offers more than 1,000 free movies on its site.

AMC Networks unveiled the new YEAH! movie streaming service app for iPad today. YEAH! users can watch a movie on the app while accessing 400-500 extras per film, including interviews from film stars and creators, links to IMDB, facts about the film and interactive polls. Also, YEAH! has enlisted The Walking Dead’s actor Michael Rooker for its “Anti-Social Holiday” campaign for TV and web spots. YEAH! will make a broader launch on other platforms including Roku next year.“What could be worse this holiday season than flesh-eating zombies? Your in-laws, of course!” Rooker said about the campaign. “So hole up with a rented movie from YEAH! this holiday season!”
Time Warner Cable launched its app for the Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire HDX tablet, yesterday. The TWC app will offer subscribers 300 channels of live TV and 5,000 on-demand videos while at home, and when out-of-the-home users will only be able to access limited content.
AMC made history on iTunes as it took three of the top five 2013 best selling TV shows on Apple’s digital store. The entire list from first to last includes: Breaking Bad Deluxe Edition, Downton Abbey Season 3, The Walking Dead Season 4, Game of Thrones Season 2, Mad Men Season 6, Homeland Season 2, The Big Band Theory Season 7, Sons of Anarchy Season 6, Scandal Season 3 and Dexter Season 8.
Hulu’s CEO Mike Hopkins revealed the streaming site will hit $1 billion in revenue by the end of the year, he said in a blog post yesterday. Even with the company’s major executive shakeup this past year that’s still a whopping $625 million more than in 2012. Hopkins also mentioned Hulu Plus’ mega gains, with a reported five million subscribers and 50 percent streaming content on mobile devices.
Microsoft will not name a new CEO until early 2014, a board member said in a blog post yesterday. Chairman John W. Thompson explained they have looked at more than 100 top executive candidates, and have narrowed it down to a group of 20. One of those 20 is rumored to be Ford’s CEO Alan Mullalay, and Ford’s stock fell over seven percent yesterday as worries loomed over the motor company about the possibility. Previous Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer stepped down earlier this year.
Netflix hired TV comedy veteran, Jane Wiseman, as a new drama and comedy original programming Senior Executive for the streaming service. Previously, Wiseman was previously Senior Vice President of Comedy Development for NBC and Universal TV, and she is known for helping with shows like Parks and Rec and Arrested Development.
A&E Chairman Abbe Raven announced she is joining the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ Executive Committee. The committee includes other top executives from HBO, The Emmys and Microsoft.

Netflix brought out its holiday spirit and silly side, by releasing a trailer for the its original series Fireplace for Your Home. The series, which is exactly what the title says, includes three episodes. A Netflix user had a bit of fun with a review that received almost 400 responses to say, “to the viewer’s delight, the fire spreads (Spoiler) to the other two logs in the fireplace!” and “I’m confident Miramax will develop this series into a beloved full length feature (Bonfire?), or maybe an NBC reboot with a more modern take on the series (gas fireplace anyone?).” Check out the trailer from Netflix at www.cynopsis.com.
