IN THE NEWS

FCC chairman Tom Wheeler will depart his post on January 20. The move sets the stage for the Trump administration to move the federal agency under Republican control. Senate Republicans did not confirm Democrat Jessica Rosenworcel for a new term before they left on recess; her term will end January 3. “Serving as F.C.C. Chairman during this period of historic technological change has been the greatest honor of my professional life,” Wheeler said yesterday in a statement.

Comcast-owned NBCUniversal has sent a letter to Nielsen raising concerns about a new measurement product due for release March 1 at the start of Upfront season. The Nielsen service, called Total Content Ratings, promises to measure audiences in areas outside the traditional linear TV ratings system, including SVOD services and on mobile devices. In the letter, NBCU chairman of advertising sales and client partnerships Linda Yaccarino says she has “deep concerns” about Total Content Ratings, calling it “incomplete” and “inconsistent… Bottom line, it’s not ready for release,” Yaccarino says in the letter. Nielsen says it stands behind the product. “Since January 2016, Nielsen has been working with publishers through various implementations of the components of Total Content Ratings and Digital Content Ratings. Currently, dozens of TV and digital media brands are enabled for TV, VOD or digital measurement inside of Nielsen’s Total Audience measurement framework,” the company says. “We do not underestimate the importance of the rigor of this work, as clients use our metrics to make decisions on content, programming, distribution, and as a currency for ad planning and settlement.”

NBCUniversal, together with the International Olympic Committee and the United States Olympic Committee, will launch a year-round US cable channel dedicated to Olympic sports programming. Christened Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA, the channel will launch during the second half of 2017 and will have an emphasis on American athletes and teams. It complements NBCU’s digital Olympic Channel, which launched after the Olympics in Rio, and will bring additional coverage of Olympic sports programs that will appear exclusively on other NBCU platforms.

TV One announced its third annual American Black Film Festival sponsorship and screenplay competition. Created to promote the production of creative, contemporary, engaging and relatable screenplays, the 2017 TV One Screenplay Competition, which opens Friday, December 16, will highlight three new writers who will vie for a $5,000 cash prize and a chance to have their screenplay produced into an original, made-for-TV movie, which will debut in 2018 on TV One and at the 22nd American Black Film Festival.

Another classic reboot is in the works at CBS. A new version of 1950s sitcom The Honeymooners is in development at the network. Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly executive produce via their CBS TV Studios-based Timberman/Beverly Productions together with Eric and Kim Tannenbaum, who also exec-produce CBS’ reboot of The Odd Couple. Jeff Greenstein (Mom, Will & Grace) also executive produces.

NBC has put in development a comedy from former Happy Endings writer/producers Matthew and Daniel Libman, L.A. Clippers player Blake Griffin and Ryan Kalil of the Panthers.
