TOP NEWS

Get ready to put your pretty on. Stephanie Laing, the producer and sometime director of HBO‘s Veep, is launching a new female-oriented online comedy network. PYPO (short for Put Your Pretty On) was founded earlier this year by Laing and former Beats by Dre exec Susan Paley. PYPO will feature original animations, editorials, and sketches, as well as The PYPEline, a weekly e-newsletter.  PYPO debuts January 4.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

The Mouse House just can’t enough of the Middle Kingdom. A day after announcing a new content deal with LeTV, Disney inked a partnership with Alibaba to launch its new SVOD platform in China. DisneyLife, which features TV shows, TV series, books, and movies (including Pixar‘s entire catalogue), is currently available in only one other territory, having launched in the U.K. last month. The service will be served up by Wasu Media Network, which Alibaba owns a stake in.

Netflix keeps snatching up content for its original film slate. The company has acquired Divanation, a comedy starring Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler, and Diane Keaton as former members of a once-popular singing group. (The trio also appeared together in 1996’s The First Wives Club.) The film is set be produced by Brad Fischer, James Vanderbilt, and William Sherak of Mythology Entertainment. The director is yet to be pinned down.

Guinness World Records partnered with digital and strategic video communications firm D S Simon Media to announce a new U.S. marketing initiative. The companies will now begin sharing information about each other’s services with their respective clients, with a heavy emphasis on proliferating videos of people’s Guinness World Record attempts. "The Guinness book is generally a book of facts," said Peter Harper, SVP Americas of Guinness World Records, in a phone call with Cynopsis Digital. "It’s not a book of stories. But there are some seriously interesting records that, for whatever reason, don’t make it into the book – and those records also have great backstories. And some of those stories can be told in a two-minute video segment. So this gives us another platform to start telling our stories and deepening people’s interest in our brand."

CONTENT PROGRAMMING

Historically, Hulu original series have had something in common with the streaming platform’s home city of Los Angeles: They get fewer than four seasons. Now that’s changed; Hulu’s drama East Los High has been renewed, making it the first Hulu original to attain four-season status. The series, about teens in East L.A., bills itself as the first English-language show with Latino creators, Latino writers, and an all-Latino cast. Season four will debut in 2016.

Bet you didn’t predict this career move: Mariah Carey has launched a sketch comedy series. The acclaimed musician has teamed up with Funny or Die to launch Mariah Carey’s Holiday Sketchtacular, a limited 8-episode series set to run on Verizon‘s Go90 service between December 15 and December 22nd.

Who won the Republican debate? That’s the kind of polling question you might have seen on CNN‘s Facebook page during the cable network’s broadcast of the GOP presidential primary debate last night. And afterward, you may have seen the audience’s responses broadcast to CNN’s live audience. It’s all thanks to iPowow, a participation TV platform that allows audiences to interact with TV broadcasts using smartphones and social media.  Cynopsis Digital spoke by phone with Gavin Douglas, the veteran TV pro-turned-iPowow CEO. ADVERTISING

The online video site Dailymotion has partnered with AOL Platforms. Advertisers will now be able to buy Dailymotion inventory through ONE by AOL, the programmatic platform launched by AOL earlier this year.

RESEARCH

The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating are the purest form of showing interest digitally, since they’re organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).

Source: ListenFirst. The TVI Rating aggregates metrics that measure organically generated activity by fans of the TV show. The metric includes total volume of official hashtag mentions on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, along with Wikipedia page views (as a proxy for organic search volume) for a show as a percentage of the total volume of the same activities for all shows.

Ad tech company Unruly released its list of the most shared brands of 2015. Google‘s Android took the top spot, largely thanks to Android’s staggeringly adorable Friends Furever ad, which launched in February and went on to become the most shared ad of all time (6,432,921 shares total). Methodology: Based on the number of shares tracked between January 1, 2015 and December 10, 2015. Data comes from the top 6,000 most shared videos during this period. The data was sourced using Unruly Analytics (TM). Brands’ social video success is ranked by the number of shares they attract across Twitter, Facebook and the blogosphere as opposed to the number of views.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Some reshuffling at the Disney-owned digital production company Maker Studios: CEO Ynon Kreiz will be stepping down as of January 11.  Maker COO Courtney Holt will then take over as CEO and Executive VP.

Roy Sekoff, a founding editor of The Huffington Post and the current President of HuffPost Live, is leaving the company. In a letter to staffers, company founder Arianna Huffington made reference to Sekoff’s grueling practice of commuting from his L.A. home to the company offices in NY each week. "After years of cross-country commuting, he has decided to spend less time on planes and more time helping his daughter with her homework," she wrote.

The online TV platform FilmOn TV Networks has hired David Goldsmith as Chief Strategy Officer and Head of Corporate Development. Previously, Goldsmith served as a corporate strategist for the company.
