CYNOPSIS
12.12.14

Good morning. It’s Friday, December 12, 2014, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Friday’s Premiere:
TNT: Wake Up Call at 9p

Sunday’s Premieres:
AHC: Secrets of the Bible at 10p
CBS: Undercover Boss at 8p
Science: Biblical Conspiracies at 9p

Sunday’s Finales:
Food: Holiday Baking Championship at 9p
HBO: The Newsroom at 9p, Getting On at 10:30p

Nominees for the 2015 Golden Globe Awards were announced Thursday morning. Among the TV nods: for best drama series, it’s Showtime’s The Affair, HBO’s Game of Thrones, CBS’s The Good Wife and Netflix’s House of Cards. Competing for best comedy series are HBO’s Girls and Silicon Valley, CW’s Jane the Virgin, Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black and Amazon’s Transparent. Ceremony airs Sunday, January 11 on NBC. For a full list, go here.

IN THE NEWS

Of note: Showtime’s nine Globes nods were the most in its history, and the net’s The Affair was the only freshman series to earn nods for lead actor, actress and drama series. HBO won the most network noms, with 15, while FX’s Fargo scored the most series mentions with five. First-timers CW, Cinemax and Amazon got seats at the table with nominations for Jane the Virgin, The Knick and Transparent. Conspicuous by their absence: Awards magnets Modern Family and Big Bang Theory.

David Letterman may be clearing out of The Late Show on May 20, but Stephen Colbert won’t be slipping into the long-time host’s seat while it’s still warm. Although Colbert’s signing off on Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report December 18, he won’t start his CBS late night job until August or September, according to the LA Times.

Colbert’s last days on Comedy Central will include visits from Seth Rogen, rapper Kendrick Lamar and military veteran Phil Clay. But the last night of his nine-year run Colbert has reserved for his “colleague and lifelong friend” Grimmy, the Grim Reaper.

Les Moonves won’t be job-hunting anytime soon. CBS Corporation extended the president and CEO’s contract – set to conclude in 2017 – through June 2019, at which point Moonves will become an executive advisor to the company he joined in 1995, with an option to establish a production company under CBS’s auspices.

Twitter users are less likely than non-users to be cord cutters or nevers, according to a new study, “The Twitter Effect: Understanding Twitter’s Role in TV Behaviors,” from Ipsos MedaCT. They are also watching just as much broadcast and cable content as non-users, and are significantly more likely to be experts or influencers of TV – with knowledge increasing with frequency of Twitter use. While 38 percent of monthly tweeters say people seek out their opinions about TV shows, the number jumps to 60 percent for daily tweeters.

The CBS Television Station group and mobile tech company Curb have partnered to create a new taxi TV media platform. Content from CBS-owned stations now appears in video screens in over 2000 vehicles in LA, Minneapolis-St. Paul, with local content for 5000 Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth and Denver cars on the way.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

ABC Family picked up docu-series My Transparent Life, about a teenager who learns his parents are getting a divorce and his dad is becoming woman, direct to series from Ryan Seacrest Productions. The dive into unscripted tracks with the net’s sensibility. “While Ben’s family situation is unusual, the themes and coming-of-age issues are universal, and we think our viewers will find a real connection to them,” said net president Tom Ascheim.

Commercial production company Studio Center is pushing into long-form, non-fiction television with the launch of Studio Center Entertainment.

Saban Brands has formed two new units within the company. “With the development of Saban Brands Lifestyle Group and Saban Brands Entertainment Group, we now have the opportunity to further elevate our current and future portfolio of properties in each of these sectors,” said Elie Dekel, president of Saban Brands.

The first-person accounts of flirtations turned fatal “has become a quintessential series in ID’s programming lineup,” said Henry Shleiff, group president of ID, AHC, DA, Discovery Fit & Health and Discovery Family Channel.

Nexstar Broadcasting Group and Dish Network reached a new retrans deal covering 60 network affiliated and local stations in 46 markets. The deal was struck before the expiration of a third contract extension.

While news broadcasts may be holding steady, their credibility with young viewers isn’t. Linda Ong of TruthCo. has some solutions: Check them out in Cynsiders.
