Online games World of Warcraft and Second Life are not just games: at least that’s what American and British spies have suspected. The New York Times reports that in 2008, the National Security Agency warned that online games might attract terrorist networks to communicate secretly or plot attacks, which led spies to create characters and try to recruit informers on the games themselves. The documents, disclosed by Edward Snowden, however, never hinted at any counterterrorism success, and WOW maker said spies did not have permission to use the game for those purposes. WOW has 7.7 million players, and Second Life has 33 million players.

AMC and Reelzchannel announced they have both signed on for ad tech company Ensequence’s platform AdConneqt+. The technology allows viewers to respond to ads with remote control clicks, which will measure engagement and effectiveness. The platform’s projected reach is 30 to 40 million households by 2014.
Screen Media Ventures, owner of movie streaming site Popcornflix, announced that its horror channel, FrightPIX, is now available at www.frightpix.com. FrightPIX initially launched in January 2013 on Xbox, Roku, Android and iOS with 300 horror flicks, and has been adding 30 to 50 new titles every month since.
Video site Dailymotion.com announced it has acquired video technology company Jilion and its video engine SublimeVideo. Dailymotion publishers, advertisers, and content producers will now be able to use video customization tools, playback features and increase their social integration. Dailymotion has 120 million unique users, with 2.5 billion video views every month according to ComScore.
Netflix will release a new original documentary about Mitt Romney and his 2012 presidential campaign on Jan. 24. Called Mitt, the doc is directed by Greg Whiteley, who was also behind New York Doll and Resolved.
…Netflix also announced that Lost and Alias writer Drew Goddard will write and direct the pilot for its upcoming original series, Daredevil. The new show is part of the Disney Marvel and Netflix deal made earlier this year. Daredevil will include 13 episodes, and be released in 2015.
Machinima‘s new animated series, Hail to the King, will debut on its HappyHour channel on Dec. 15. Produced in partnership with rock band Avenged Sevenfold, Hail is directed by Adult Swim’s Joe Schnepp. All six episodes will be released when the show premieres.
A&E is kicking off its Twitter Amplify program with the Duck Dynasty Christmas special today, Dec. 11. Fans will be asked to tweet #naughty or #nice for a chance to see their profile picture used in a unique Christmas GIF. Also, holiday-themed content will roll out on Twitter and Tumblr from the episode, which will also include a Retweet to Win sweepstakes on the Duck Dynasty Twitter account.
NBCUniversal’s annual Share A Tree initiative with the Arbor Day Foundation got social this year, letting consumers share customized holiday e-cards all this month. E-cards can feature photos from Facebook and be shared through Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr or Facebook. A tree will be planted for each holiday card created, shared, liked or for each tweet with the hashtag #ShareATree.
Samsung was named Unruly‘s “Most Shared Social Video Brand of 2013″ yesterday, at its first Twitter awards show, Unruly Video Sharing Awards #VSAs. Samsung’s campaign S4: Sound & Shot brought in 7.3 million shares alone, beating out second place GEICO (5.1 million shares) and third place Dove (4.52 million shares). The award ceremony that gives away a Golden Cat, also recognized categories like “Most Shared Prankvert,” Most Shared “Music-Branded Video Combo” and “Most Shared Celebrity Ad.”
Web video ad tech company Unicorn Media announced a new Twitter video content embedding feature called Unicorn Once, using Twitter’s Player Cards media display on the timeline. “The benefits of our approach are fast times to publication on all platforms, which is a key requirement for the kind of breaking news events that quickly trend on Twitter,” Unicorn’s Chief Strategy Officer David Morel told Cynopsis.
AdWeek released the Top 20 sponsored ads from the multimedia blogging site, Tumblr, which measured desktop and mobile sponsored posts and Radar Ads based on reblogs and likes (or known as Tumblr’s “notes”) within the first 24 hours after an ad’s launch. The top five are:
- 01) Despicable Me 2: Universal Pictures’ GIF: 315,000 notes since July.
02) Converse: A GIF, created by Tumblr user Matthia Brown: 182,000 notes since May.
03) The Great Gatsby: Warner Bros. GIF: 152,000 notes since July.
04) Ford: The #And Is Better: This GIF didn’t even mention the name or image of a Ford (just cats and the internet): 117,036 notes since June.

VEVO and Revision3 have officially launched on Google’s Chromecast, as of yesterday. Currently, the device carries apps Netflix, Hulu Plus and YouTube.
NBCUniversal named Bear Fisher as its new Senior Vice President of Marketing and brand Strategy for its Domestic TV Distribution and New Media Distribution. Fisher has been with NBCU for 12 years, and most recently served at Senior Vice President of Brand and Strategy and Creative Director for The Style Network.
Electronic Arts appointed Ryan Gagerman as Director of Licensing. Prior to joining EA, Gagerman was Vice President of international Licensing at Paramount Pictures.
