CBS ordered four-hour mini-series The Dovekeepers from exec producers Roma Downey (Touched by an Angel) and reality king Mark Burnett (Survivor, The Voice), the team behind History ratings smash The Bible. The production, based on the Alice Hoffman novel about four women’s fight for survival at the siege of Masada, planned for 2015, is the first project from CBS Entertainment and CBS TV Studios’ new Limited Series and Event programming unit.

IN THE NEWS

Sarah Palin gets another shot at television in Sportsman Channel‘s weekly series Amazing America with Sarah Palin. Why Palin? “Governor Palin is a transformative figure and terrific storyteller,” Sportsman Channel CEO Gavin Harvey tells Cynopsis. “We are proud she is calling Sportsman Channel home.” The former vice presidential candidate is no TV show novice – Sarah Palin’s Alaska ran for a season on TLC, and she had a stint as a contributor on Fox News. Her weekly Sportsman series premieres in April 2014.

How much will worldwide ad spending will go up in 2014? Depends on which media agency you ask. GroupM forecast a 4.6 percent increase compared to 2013, down from an earlier prediction of 5.1 percent. ZenithOptimedia upped its forecast from 5.1 to 5.3 percent, while Magna Global is now estimating a 6.5 percent bump, up from its previous forecast of 6.1 percent growth.

Californication will get a seventh season on Showtime but it will be the dark comedy’s last, announced the net. The final twelve episodes of the series, starring David Duchovny as a hedonistic writer, will premiere in April 2014 – to “neatly wrap up” storylines.

The American Film Institute named its Top 10 programs of 2013 on Monday, revealing a preference for non-broadcast dramas. And the winners are: The Americans (FX), Breaking Bad (AMC), Game of Thrones (HBO), The Good Wife (CBS), House of Cards (Netflix), Mad Men (AMC), Masters of Sex (Showtime), Orange is the New Black (Netflix), Scandal (ABC) and (the sole comedy) Veep (HBO). Selections were decided by juries of AFI members, critics, artists and AFI trustees.

While Bob Costas focuses on bobsledding, NBC is turning to New Yorker editor David Remnick, who served as Moscow bureau chief for the Washington Post, to offer commentary on more serious subjects surrounding the Winter Olympics in Sochi, like Russia’s gay propaganda law. “David is a distinguished journalist who knows Russia very well,” said Jim Bell, exec producer, NBC Olympics.

The Parents Television Council on Monday pointed to a new study that says while there is about the same amount of violent programming on broadcast and cable, shows that would be labeled for mature audiences on cable (TVMA) were rated appropriate for 14-year-olds (TV14) on broadcast. Broadcaster group TV Watch responded, accusing the PTC of “exaggerated numbers, flawed methodology and misleading or outright false claims.”

At a media conference on Monday, Time Warner Cable COO Rob Marcus said a Bloomberg interview suggesting he would consider selling the company was misleading, and that his management team “is completely focused on running Time Warner Cable for the long haul.” Not that a sale is entirely out of the question. “My job as CEO,” said Marcus, who takes on that role January 1, 2014, from Glenn Britt, “is to maximize value for shareholders.”

USA is launching Sirens on with back-to-back eps on Thursday, March 6 at 10p. The half-hour medical comedy will follow the midseason three premiere of Suits at 9p. “Suits has a massive and incredibly young audience that is a perfect fit” for the new show, said USA EVP of original programming Jackie de Crinis

Legendary Entertainment announced its acquisition of television production company Asylum Entertainment (Beverly Hills Pawn). The sale allows the company to keep its premium scripted content under the Legendary brand, while expanding into more diverse genres with Asylum.

Rock doc Rolling Stones: Sweet Summer Sun – Return to Hyde Park shows music and backstage footage from the band’s 2013 performance in Hyde Park, London 44 years after their historic free concert there in 1969. Documentary’s television premiere is on Showtime Friday, December 20 at 9p.

NBCUniversal‘s Universal Networks International shuttered Style Network in the U.K. on Tuesday, December 9. The company, which said it will continue to “build successes” at Universal Channel, E!, Syfy and Movies 24 across the pond, replaced Style in the U.S. in September with male-focused Esquire Network.
