12.07.16

Good morning. It’s Wednesday December 7, 2016 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

FOX Sports and Major League Soccer are offering new frontiers for Saturday’s MLS Cup, announcing that Saturday’s MLS Cup will be showcased in VR via LiveLike. Viewers can watch through the FOX Sports VR app, with Audi on-board as presenting sponsor. Viewers will be able to select from five camera angles with or without a headset and can also enter a “virtual suite” with access to rosters and live stats. The match will also include a “first-of-its-kind” VR replay feature for iOS users, allowing viewers to rewind the game in 30-second increments going as far back as 30-minutes, as well as the ability to control replays from different camera angles.

“We are thrilled to work with Audi and offer VR capabilities for FOX Sports’ first MLS Cup broadcast and once again team with LiveLike on such an important and historic event for the company,” said Devin Poolman, SVP, Digital Platforms, FOX Sports. “MLS has done a tremendous job helping soccer grow in the United States and we couldn’t be more excited to be working with them on the first VR experience for the MLS Cup.”

ON THE AIR

With bowl season upon us, ESPN reports that over 179,000,000 fans viewed more than 100 billion minutes of college football games across ESPN’s Nielsen-rated television networks. In addition, ESPN games were streamed on 15,128,000 unique devices during the 2016 college football regular season. ABC’s Saturday Night Football finished the season as the most-watched college football franchise with an average total live audience of 6,087,000 viewers with its TV audience (5,996,000 viewers) up 10%.

The SEC on CBS finished its season with a national household rating/share of 3.4/8, and averaged 5.7 million viewers. The SEC Championship on Dec. 3 ranked as the highest-rated and most-watched Conference Championship game, averaging 11.1 million viewers and a 6.6/15 HH rating/share.

On FOX Sports, the company saw its own conference championship games record big numbers on Friday and Saturday beginning with the Pac-12 Championship Game which drummed up a 3.4 rating with 5.671 million viewers and marking the second most-watched Pac-12 Championship Game ever. Saturday night’s Big Ten Championship Game handed the broadcast network with a 5.3 rating and 9.198 million viewers, while the unofficial battle for the Big 12 Championship scored a 3.1 with 4.817 million viewers.

Meanwhile, ESPN serves up the 82nd annual Heisman Trophy Presentation Presented by Nissan on Saturday at 8p. The show will be hosted by Chris Fowler, along with college football commentators Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit, Tom Rinaldi and “Heismanologist” Joe Tessitore. The show will be complemented by the sounds of hip-hop duo Black Violin.

Thursday will see ESPN carry The Home Depot College Football Awards at 7p. Presenters are set to include AJ Hawk, Desmond Howard, Joe Allison, Ray Guy, Warren Moon, Calvin Hill and more.

Elsewhere in college sports, HBO will debut the docuseries UConn Huskies: The March to Madness on March 1 with episodes running Wednesdays on the network. The series follow’s the school’s famed women’s basketball program as it looks to tie UCLA’s record of 11 college basketball championships. The first episode will run 60 minutes, followed by half-hour segments.

ESPNU and ESPNews are set to televise 12 regular-season NBA Development League during the 2016-17 season. Games begin tomorrow when the Delaware 87ers visit the Westchester Knicks at 7p on ESPNU. The channel will also be home to the NBA D-League Playoffs, including First Round action, the Conference Finals, and the D-League Finals.

Tennis Channel doubles down on its Year in Review coverage in 2016, scheduling two hour-long shows dedicated to both the men’s and women’s tours starting with the women’s Year in Review on December 12 at 8p and followed by the ATP Year in Review at 9p. Both editions will be hosted by Mary Carillo, who will be joined by Hall of Famers Tracy Austin and Lindsay Davenport.

There’s a new demo in town. El Rey Network announced Monday that it is expanding its focus to embrace a surging audience it calls “Strivers,” new working and middle class males not defined by traditional age and race categories  but who consume more hours of linear cable TV each week than any other socioeconomic group. ‘We learned that the audience tuning in to El Rey Network was much broader and more diverse than just English speaking Hispanic men,” said Daniel Tibbets, El Rey Network president and general manager. Tibbets will explain the strategy and research behind a brand voice that’s “aspirational, authentic and inclusive” as one of the expert panelists in the December 15 Cynopsis webinar, Diversity and Inclusion: What You Need to Know to Make it Real.
