12/01/15: Rachel Nichols is back in Bristol; CBS Sports gets an eye lift; Collins goes On Location


Good morning. It’s Tuesday December 1, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

Rachel Nichols is heading back to ESPN, this time with her own program in hand, in a story first broken by Vanity Fair’s Jim Miller. Nichols, who had been at Turner Sports/CNN, will also serve as an anchor and reporter in her return to the company. Meanwhile, SI reports that she is expected to “anchor her own program, contribute to SportsCenter and other platforms including E:60, and work on issue-oriented journalism.” She left the company in 2013 after a run that began in 2004 and included work on SportsCenter, Sunday NFL Countdown, NBA Countdown, and Monday Night Football.


The Broncos’ OT win over the Patriots delivered NBC’s SNF with its own 16.2/26 overnight victory. The matchup took the night, climbing 12% over the Week 12 SNF matchup a year ago and marks the second-best Week 12 NBC SNF ever. Top markets: Denver with a 48.6/70, followed by Boston, Providence, Albuquerque and Las Vegas.

Speaking of the NFL, the league is flexing its schedule for Week 14. The revised slate will see the patriots/Texans matchup shift to SNF at 8:30p. Meanwhile the Seahawks/Ravens battle will now move to 1p on FOX.

After Kobe Bryant’s retirement announcement broke the Internet, Showtime announced that it would be re-airing the documentary special Kobe Bryant’s Muse tonight at midnight, after Inside the NFL. The doc includes “intimate and exclusive footage” in the aftermath of Bryant’s shoulder injury which ended his 2014-2015 season with the Lakers and was directed by Gotham Chopra, and executive produced by Bryant and Chopra in association with Mamba Media.
MLB Network is bracing for this year’s Winter Meetings with a lineup of 35 live hours of coverage over five days from Nashville next week. Programming will see insiders Peter Gammons, Jon Heyman, Ken Rosenthal and Joel Sherman report live throughout MLB Network’s five different on-site shows, beginning with MLB Tonight on Sunday at 8p. The schedule will include Hot Stove at 9a from Dec. 7-10, High Heat at 1p each day and at noon on Dec. 10, with MLB Tonight at 2p and 6p, MLB Now at 4p and International Talk at 1p starting Monday.

Ahead of the 2015 SEC Championship, CBS Sports Network will feature Alabama and Florida throughout the week with games that include the 1999 Alabama/Florida battle on Monday at noon, and the 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2012 SEC Championships featuring each of those teams.

CBS Sports got a new look, shedding its 35-year old logo in a move designed to hold true to the “Network’s tradition while giving it an updated sleeker, more modern design.” In addition, the company is launching a new on-air graphics package to compliment the change. The new logo and graphics will debut as part of the Network’s Super Bowl Week programming and its broadcast of Super Bowl 50 on February 7. Afterward, the new look will be implemented across all CBS Sports and CBS Sports Network’s telecasts.

ESPN details plans for its annual Jimmy V Week for Cancer Research, which launches tomorrow and runs through Dec. 8. Highlights include a simulcast of Valvano’s 1993 ESPYs speech across ESPN domestic media networks at 7p on Wednesday, this time including an excerpt from Stuart Scott’s 2014 ESPYS speech. In addition, the company will feature the Jimmy V Men’s and Women’s Basketball Classic;, integration in Monday Night Football, NBA on ESPN, MLS Cup and college sports programming; features and vignettes in game telecasts and studio programming and special graphics. The Empire State Building will be illuminated in blue in celebration of V Week on Dec. 7.

The NHL announced plans for a free fan festival for it 2016 NHL Winter Classic on Jan 1. The two-day event will begin Dec. 31, from 11:30a-3:30p and on Jan. 1, from 9a-1p. The 2016 NHL Winter Classic Spectator Plaza will feature interactive hockey-themed attractions; live music; prizes and giveaways; food and beverages; and retail locations with an extensive selection of officially licensed 2016 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic merchandise and collectibles.

The NYC Metro Chapter of WISE announced that on December 8 at the PlayStation Theater it will honor CBS Sports Producer/Director Suzanne Smith; Senior Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer for the Brooklyn Nets and Barclays Center Elisa Padilla and Karen Davis-Farage, president and co-owner of Pole Position Raceway as its inaugural Women of Inspiration. The festivities serve as part of an effort by WISE chapters across the country to recognize women who have achieved leadership positions in the sports and events industries while serving as role models and mentors for other women. The program will be emceed by WABC meteorologist Amy Freeze and will also include a sports-related fashion show in which "models” will walk the runway representing each of the Metropolitan area’s professional sports teams in a style showcase.

Marc Anthony’s MAGNUS Media announced today the launch of MAGNUS Sports, a fully integrated division dedicated to the worldwide representation of major athletes. The division has completed its first initiative by forming a joint venture with premier boutique baseball agency Praver Shapiro Sports Management and the signing of Cuban-born, 4-time Major League All-Star pitcher Aroldis Chapman.


Tennis Channel locked in a partnership with the United States Tennis Association for a digital-subscription partnership centered on the channel’s Tennis Channel Plus service. The alliance will allow USTA members are able to take 25% off Tennis Channel Plus’ $79.99 annual subscription through the end of the year before resuming from May 1 through June 5. Additionally, non-members who want to purchase the OTT service through the USTA are able to save 20-percent on an annual subscription.


Disney XD is putting its own spin on eSports to the test, partnering with Nintendo to launch Clash of Karts: Mario Kart 8. The new series will feature eight of “America’s best young gamers” who will be able to partner with YouTube personalities like Strawburry 17, Andre (Black Nerd Comedy), AtomicMari and SethBling to compete in a one-hour multi-round Mario Kart 8 competition. The debut episode runs on Dec. 5 at 8p.

On Location Experiences (previously known as NFL On Location), a premium experiential hospitality business owned by RedBird Capital Partners, Bruin Sports Capital and the NFL named Collins as its CEO. “John Collins has been a successful executive at two leagues and at a franchise,” said Eric Grubman, Executive Vice President, Business Ventures, at the National Football League.“He has had decades of experience with a proven track record in sales, marketing, operations and general management. He will bring all those skills and more to lead this exciting new venture.”
