Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 14, 2014, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

Charley Humbard, President & CEO of the UP network: We’re building a business and a brand. So I look for people who reflect our brand of value-based entertainment. I interview everyone from who will be at the front desk to the most senior jobs. And when I do that, it’s not necessarily for their expertise. It’s to see what makes them tick. Are they smart? Are they driven? Do they share our values?
Here’s the result of that mindset: We have had four people at our front desk. They’ve all been promoted into positions in digital, programming, production, and marketing. We have made it a point that no one gets in who doesn’t have the potential to be a leader. It’s worth it.

Even in a low-level job, you can have vision. In the TV business, very often you have people with Masters’ degrees and they’re being asked to do Craft Services. But if you step into the job saying, I’ll be the very best, people will take notice. Virtually every manager has paid their own dues and they will recognize that in others.
