NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Hulu picked up a new comedy series from Amy Poehler, Dave Becky (Louie) and Julie Klausner starring Billy on the Street’s head writer Klausner and Billy Eichner. Difficult People revolves around two best friends in New York whose irreverent behavior often lands themselves in awkward situations. Hulu has already ordered half-hour comedy Casual from Jason Reitman, and an original series from JJ Abrams called 11/22/63/

Facebook is expected to present at the 2015 Digital Content Newfronts, according to Adweek. Founding partners AOL, DigitasLBi, Yahoo, Microsoft, Hulu and YouTube formed the consortium 2+ years ago in order to sell their wares to advertisers; Pure play and traditional publishers such as Vice, CNE, and Maker Studios have since climbed aboard. Facebook has been pushing into video in the last year, and reports one billion video views a day.

Legendary Entertainment signed a first-look TV and digital deal with Mosaic Media Group. The companies will develop series for TV, and OTT platforms. Mosaic reps Jim Carrey, Will Ferrell and the Wayans Brothers.

My Country Nation announced three new original series: Young In The Nation: Florida Georgia Line, Simply Sara and Light My Fire. The first new series will star magician Justin Flom from 2014 CMA Vocal Duo of the Year Florida Georgia Line (ten episodes, new every Thursday). The second stars country singer Sara Evans and picks up from her YouTube series, and Light My Fire features the butchers of “Porter Road Butcher.” All three shows are available on MyCountryNation.com

Oprah.com launched a new digital food series called #HarvestDay, a “pinterest-style” multimedia show that features short foodie music videos with organic recipes. Chefs like Susan Feniger (Too Hot Tamales) and YouTube star Catherine McCord will make appearances. A new ep will premiere every week online.

Mobile video platform Torrential and Geico developed a new series with NFL players called Digital Diaries. The program will debut on mobile apps only through Cinesport, Dailymotion Sports, Men’s Health, Men’s Fitness, MSN, Sporting News and the Torrential TV App, with a new episode going live every week until the end of football season.

CONTENT MEDIA

The second season of Defy Media and Break.com’s Prank it FWD launched yesterday, with YouTube jokester Greg Benson doing the honors in the first video. The first season attracted more than 30 million views; Future tricks will be presented by YT celebs like SMOSH, Smosh Games, LAHWF, JstuStudios, Clevver and Screen Junkies. The second season is sponsored by Barefoot Wine and Bubbly.

Evolve Media’s CraveOnline Media, the male lifestyle publisher, is re-launching ComingSoon.net for its 16th anniversary. The design includes a new image-heavy homepage, better navigation, and more TV, videogames and home entertainment coverage. ComingSoon.net garners 14 million viewers per month, according to comScore September 2014.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

Starz debuted Encore Play and Movieplex Play on Xbox One yesterday, bringing all three of the TV Everywhere Play services to the Microsoft consoles. The apps will offer more than 2,000 movies, original and TV episodes from the Starz networks.

AD PLATFORMS

Jivox has integrated the Jivox IQ Ad Server with Mediaocean’s Prisma ad platform Prisma. “Agencies are moving quickly to offer data-driven advertising, but until now these innovative campaigns had to be tracked and accounted for separately from traditional banner ad campaigns,” Jivox CEO and Founder Diaz Nesamoney said. “For many agencies the complexity and cost of running two ad serving systems and managing the billing process was prohibitive.”

RESEARCH

Consumers are spending more time on their mobile devices than watching TV, according to new research from mobile app ad platform Flurry’. The data showed that time spent on mobile devices grew 9.3 percent in the U.S., from 2.42 hours to 2.57 hours in the last nine months; American consumers spent 2.48 hours on TV every day in the same period measured, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. “Most app developers didn’t know back in 2008 that they would be building the next generation of TV channels…All I know is when I am in our living room, I have a smartphone on my right, a tablet on my left and a TV remote control somewhere under a couch cushion,” Flurry CEO and President Simon Khalaf said. Yahoo purchased Flurry four months ago for a price tag between $200 and $300 million.
