CYNOPSIS
11.16.15

Good morning. It’s Monday November 16, 2015, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Premieres:
AHC: Nuremberg: Nazi Judgment Day at 10p
Food: Guilty Pleasures at 10p, Top 5 Restaurants at 10:30p

IN THE NEWS

As world landmarks were alight with the colors of the French flag, the outpouring support for Paris after Friday’s horrific terrorist attacks in that city that left 129 dead included a moment of silence opening Saturday’s Democratic debate on CBS. Ahead of Army football’s game Saturday, West Point cadet Caleb McNeill carried the French flag along with the American flag, and a moment of silence was held before the weekend’s NFL games. U2 cancelled concerts scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, including one slated to air on HBO. “We are fully resolved to go ahead with this show at an appropriate time,” said the band, which laid flowers by a makeshift memorial near the Bataclan theater.

A Supergirl episode that included a series of bombings and an NCIS: Los Angeles episode involving ISIS recruitment have been replaced on CBS’s schedule tonight with different installments of the shows. NBC canceled the live episode of Undateable planned for the same day as the Paris attacks, running a repeat instead.

Spike Lee, accepting an honorary Oscar at Saturday’s 7th annual Governor Awards, noted, “It’s easier to be president of the United States as a black person than to be the head of a studio.” As for why his next film, Chi-Raq will be Amazon’s first feature release, Lee earlier told the Hollywood Reporter, “They’re a great company. And also everyone else said no.”

Broadcasters scored a victory Thursday when a U.S. District Court judge in D.C. ruled that FilmOn X cannot claim a compulsory license to air their programming, as cable companies can. That contradicts a July ruling in California that was in FilmOn X’s favor. Fellow streamer Aereo was brought down by a Supreme Court ruling in June, 2014 that decided the service violated broadcasters’ copyrights.

Comcast also had a victory in court last week, when a federal judge overturned an Oklahoma jury’s $19 million dollar decision against the cable company. The class action lawsuit accused Comcast of forcing customers to lease set-top boxes, but “There simply is no evidence from which a reasonable jury could determine that that arrangement led to a foreclosure of commerce,” said the judge.

Hulu is in talks to sell a stake in the company to Time Warner, reports the Wall Street Journal. A deal would make Time Warner co-owner with Comcast, Walt Disney and 21st Century Fox. Elbowing into Netflix territory, Hulu added an $11.99/month ad-free option in September.

Jamelle Bouie is CBS News’ new Political Analyst, contributing to all platforms, including 2016 campaign coverage. Bouie had been a regular contributor on Face the Nation.

Who do you think came out the winner in Saturday’s Democratic debate? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Film producer Joel Silver (The Matrix) and his Silver Pictures Television struck a multi-year first-look television deal with Lionsgate. Kicking things off: a put pilot commitment from CBS for vampire drama Bathory, and from Fox for basketball drama Soar. The partnership is designed to capitalize on Silver’s relationship with A-list talent. “Joel has created some of the biggest franchises of all time and established an incredible network of relationships with top writers and other world-class creative talent,” said Lionsgate Television Group chairman Kevin Beggs. “We’re thrilled at the opportunity to team with him as he focuses his creative genius on the world of television with the same emphasis on exciting, high-profile branded properties that have been his signature in the film world.”

Discovery Communications is going for gold in Poland. The company has been invited to document investigations into what might be buried treasure at the possible site of a legendary German armored train, underground for 70 years. The MTV Networks vets have already produced a special for Lifetime, celebrating People magazine’s 2015 selection of “The Sexiest Man Alive,” as well as a series of documentary programs for History under the title Christmas Through the Decades. They’ve also contracted with VH1 to produce a new series airing in the spring of 2016.

Fox is developing a New Orleans-set family drama/procedural, Crooked, exec produced by Peter Horton (American Odyssey). Studio is 20th Century Fox Television.

Rashida Jones and Will McCormack’s (A to Z) Le Train Train comedy project about a girl who decides to live the rest of her life without regrets has found a berth at NBC. 20th Century Fox Television is the studio.
