11/09/17: Univision Deportes is adding Bundesliga to the schedule

Good morning. It’s Thursday November 9, 2017 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Univision Deportes locked in a three-year sublicensing deal with FOX Deportes to carry Spanish-language rights to matches from Germany’s top soccer league, Bundesliga. Univision Deportes is now scheduled to air three matches per week across UDN (and broadcast network UniMas. Univision Deportes will also telecast a weekly preview show on UDN, while also providing fans a total recap of the week’s matches on Monday evenings with a new show called “Somos Bundesliga.” Univision Deportes also has engaged in a content partnership with Bayern Munich, which recently opened an office in the U.S., to bring behind the scenes access and regular interviews with key players, particularly Latin ones, to viewers.
 
“We’re excited that the arrangement between FOX and Univision Deportes. This includes matches from European powerhouses Borussia Dortmund, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Bayern Munich, with global superstars such as Mario Götze, Manuel Nuer and Arjen Robben; as well as iconic players from the Americas including James Rodriguez, Marco Fabian, Arturo Vidal, and the U.S. Soccer’s rising star Christian Pulisic.
 
 
ON THE AIR

UFC President Dana White is working on adding boxing full-time to his promotional resume, telling the LA Times that he’s “getting into boxing, 100 percent” and is in the process of obtaining a promoter’s license, but noted that he won’t be leaving the UFC, and is instead working with WME/IMG topper Ari Emanuel about bringing boxing to the mix. “It’s still early. We’re still working on it. I’ve got to get my [stuff] together, but I’m getting into boxing, man. It’s coming.”
 
In ratings news, NBA TV saw Tuesday night’s Bucks/Cavs telecast average 582,000 viewers to deliver the most viewed live sports program of the night across all of television. Season-to-date, NBA TV Players Only telecasts on Tuesday nights are up 22% when compared to all Tuesday night telecasts for the network last season. Overall, NBA TV continues to deliver its most viewed live game coverage since 2011.
 
Elsewhere, drone racing league DR1 saw its Finals score nearly 600,000 viewers this weekend on CBS. The telecast marked the first-ever drone racing program to appear on the broadcast network.
 
ESPN signed Pulitzer Prize finalist and author Mark Kriegel to a new multi-year deal. Kriegel will make his ESPN television debut on Saturday on Top Rank on ESPN beside Teddy Atlas, when Artur Beterbiev and Enrico Koelling battle for the vacant International Boxing Federation light heavyweight title. In addition to his on-air boxing analyst duties, Kriegel will do long-form story-telling, and video and print essays, on a wide array of subjects, including boxing and the NBA.
 
In other talent news, NBCSN’s telecast of Combate Americas’ Copa Combate on Saturday added Jenn Sterger to the English-language talent team for the network. She will serve as a roving reporter on the telecast and interview celebrity talent cageside and fighters backstage before the bouts.
 
CBS Sports Network tips off the fourth annual Veterans Classic and its college basketball season on Friday with a doubleheader that will see Alabama/Memphis at 6:30p and Pittsburgh/Navy at 9p. Tom McCarthy and Steve Lappas call the action for both games with reporter Jon Rothstein. Dana Jacobson hosts pre and post-game studio coverage on-site and is joined by analyst Wally Szczerbiak and Rothstein. Pre-game coverage includes a special opening featuring Basketball Hall of Famer and former Navy Midshipman David Robinson reflecting on his experience attending the Naval Academy.
 
Unified Women’s Super Middleweight World Champion Claressa Shields is locked in to defend her 168-pound titles against undefeated IBF mandatory challenger Tori Nelson on Jan. 12 live on SHOWTIME. Shields faces her second consecutive undefeated opponent in the main event of ShoBox: The New Generation at 10p from Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, NY.

ESP Research reports that MLB saw sponsors fork up a record $892 million this past season, marking an increase of 7.9% over 2016. The report, per Yahoo, adds that NBA sponsors spent $861 million last season, up 7.8% increase, with NHL sponsors dedicating $505 million for a rise of 5.9% increase while MLS sponsors are projected to have spent $347 million this season, up 4.1%. Meanwhile, NFL once again took home the crown with $1.25 billion spent on the league last season.
 
Global fitness and lifestyle brand Reebok unveiled a partnership with Victoria Beckham, who will introduce a new Reebok x Victoria Beckham collection. The collection will be introduced in late 2018 and will sit in the Reebok Innovation Collective – a brand initiative that focuses on developing footwear and apparel that delivers the next generation of performance and expression, from conceptual runway designs to tech-driven products that fill retail shelves.
 
The PGA TOUR and Rapiscan Systems inked a deal to make the security screening provider the title sponsor of the PGA TOUR Champions event contested annually at Fallen Oak in Biloxi, Miss. The newly-named Rapiscan Systems Classic will be held in March of 2018, with a three-year agreement in place through the 2020 season. Bruno Event Team will manage the event, with the MGRC Foundation continuing to serve as the tournament’s host organization, and tournament proceeds benefitting area charities.
 
 
DIGITAL & STREAMING

The NBA and Intel announced a multiyear technology partnership making Intel an authorized provider of virtual reality with Intel True VR technology and 360-degree volumetric video with Intel freeD technology for official NBA broadcast partners globally. In addition to yesterday’s news that Intel will deliver live VR content for key NBA on TNT matchups, the league will also work with the brand to produce 360-degree volumetric video and will explore other potential collaborations to enhance the creation and delivery of NBA content.
 
The Army & Air Force Exchange Service and NBC Olympics said that US service members worldwide would again be able to watch Olympic streaming coverage from their desktop and personal devices when NBCUniversal presents the XXIII Olympic Winter Games from PyeongChang in February. “We’re excited to continue this creative partnership between the Exchange and Comcast NBCUniversal to deliver the Olympics to the U.S. military community around the globe,” said Brigadier General Carol Eggert, U.S. Army, Retired and Senior Vice President of Military and Veteran Affairs at Comcast NBCUniversal. “The traits of Olympic athletes – determination, teamwork, perseverance – are shared by our service members, and it is a privilege for Comcast NBCUniversal to bring this landmark event to those who serve our Nation.”
 
United World Sports announced that the total reach of the 13.5 live hours of coverage on Facebook Live for this past weekend’s Silicon Valley 7’s Rugby weekend from San Jose topped 3.6 million fans. “Our first year event proved to have a global reach on Facebook Live that surpassed our expectations, and again proved the worldwide appeal of Sevens Rugby as a property,” said VP of Marketing Blake Mannion. “Rugby fans are known to be early adopters and very tech savvy, and the numbers generated by our team certainly showed two things: the sport is continuing to grow in popularity and the community loved the quality product produced this past weekend.”
