Chris Rock is in negotiations to host the 88th Academy Awards. It wouldn’t Rock’s first time at this rodeo – the Saturday Night Live alum hosted the 2005 show, the second-most-viewed ceremony over the past 10 years. Only Ellen Degeneres‘ stint in 2014 fared better.

IN THE NEWS

Dr. Phil McGraw has re-upped with CBS Television Distribution through 2020. Dr. Phil is the leading voice in daytime television and he’s made his show an important platform to discuss issues our viewers are struggling with every day,” said Armando Nunez, President and CEO of CBS Global Distribution Group. Added McGraw: “Extending this dynamic partnership with CBS affords us a chance to continue our important work with individuals and families across America and around the world.”

The king of the red carpet is staying put. Ryan Seacrest has inked a new two-year pact to continue hosting and executive producing E!‘s Live from the Red Carpet series, covering some of the biggest awards show events in Hollywood. Seacrest, who joined E! In 2006, will continue with the network through 2017.

Good news for Community vet Ken Jeong and the cast of his new comedy Dr. Ken: ABC has ordered nine more episodes of the series, for a total of 22. Earning an average 6.6 million viewers and 1.5 rating among A18-49, it’s the first comedy of the season to land a full-season pickup.

Monday night, Donald Trump canceled his planned appearance on Tuesday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, now filming a week of shows from Brooklyn. “I have a big political event which I can’t skip,” Trump explained to Fox NewsSean Hannity Tuesday afternoon. The GOP frontrunner said he’d drop in on Kimmel in LA in two weeks.

NBC Universo has acquired U.S. television rights to The Walking Dead from AMC. “Adding The Walking Dead to our primetime programming lineup is a clear demonstration of our commitment to bringing the most provocative and best-quality entertainment to U.S. Hispanics in Spanish,” said Ruben Mendiola, President, NBC Universo. Subscribers of NBC Universo will also be able to view episodes of  the series on Video on Demand, as well as on nbcuniverso.com and the NBC UNIVERSO Now app.

Colin Jost is relinquishing his post as head writer of Saturday Night Live to focus on “Weekend Update,” the satirical newscast he co-anchors with Michael Che. He is now credited as a writer on the NBC sketch show.

MTV announced air dates for its 2016 lineup of award shows. MTV Woodie Awards, honoring on-the-verge new artists in music, bows Wednesday, March 16. MTV Movie Awards airs Sunday, April 10, while MTV Video Music Awards airs Sunday, August 28. MTV Fandom Awards and MTV EMAs dates have yet to be named.

Discovery Consumer Products has launched a dedicated e-commerce shop. The online destination features branded merchandise for programs, including Ghost Asylum and Mountain Monsters.

Viacom acquired a minority stake in DigiTour Media, producer of concerts (DigiTours) and festivals (DigiFests) that bring together social media stars and their fans. “We believe that this pairing will lead to opportunities to combine our authentic connection to Generation Z with Viacom’s unparalleled television, film, digital and international resources in order to help accelerate and scale our media brand globally,” said Meridith Valiando Rojas, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of DigiTour.  Additional investors include LionTree and Slow Ventures.

Entries for the 43rd annual Daytime Emmy Awards are now being accepted, and registration is open for qualified judges. “Having raised the Daytime franchise to compete with the other premier awards shows on television, we are anticipating a record year for entries and look forward to another outstanding celebration of everything that makes Daytime television special and unique,” said Bob Mauro, President, NATAS.  The Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be on Friday, April 29, ahead of the Daytime Emmy Awards on Sunday, May 1 in LA.

ADVERTISING

Advertising Scorecard: Digital is driving ad dollars so far this season, reports SMI, with a 29 percent lift in September versus last year. TV spend, on the other hand, dipped 4 percent year-over-year."Ratings for the new season haven’t set the world on fire so far and we are seeing the impact of this in our September numbers released this week,"James Fennessy, SMI’s chief commercial officer, tells Cynopsis."Results for the broadcast year decline are very much in line with how we have seen spend shaking out over the period. We knew the ’14/’15 television upfront was weak and we saw evidence of this all year in our booking data from the agencies. It was hoped that scatter advertising would make up for this softness but the networks haven’t delivered the audiences they had hoped so it’s been difficult to demand pricing that would close the gap caused by the weak upfront." Bright spot? "Everyone is hopeful that new programming will bring in strong audiences in the coming months and revenue will strengthen in line with this," says Fennessy. "We see digital continue to take dollars from traditional sources but also see video increasingly capturing these dollars, which is great news for the creators of premium content."

Calling it "TV advertising redefined," Hulu took its programmatic offering live yesterday. In the toolbox: data management platform Oracle, inventory management platform Yieldex and video ad exchange LiveRail. "The marketplace has shown that data is overwhelmingly the new currency," said Peter Naylor, SVP of advertising. "Hulu is a the forefront of defining programmatic for the digital video ecosystem and will increase efficiency and ROI for marketers."

For a deeper dive into the latest in programmatic, check out the Cynopsis Programmatic TV Summit in just two weeks, Thursday, November 5 in NYC. Details are here: http://cynopsis.com/event/programmatic-tv-summit/
