10/20/16: NFL looks to sack ratings dip; Fight Network gives TNA a breather; SI begins a Crossover

Good morning. It’s Thursday October 20, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

TOP STORY

Amid headlines analyzing a ratings drop for the NFL, Commissioner Roger Goodell tackled the issue with reporters yesterday, noting that the league isn’t looking for excuses. "It’s something that I don’t think there’s a single reason for. I really don’t. We look at all those factors," Goodell said from the fall league meeting in Houston. "Everyone’s got theories, you guys got theories, others got theories. We work closely with our network partners. We see tremendous strength in our numbers. But we also know that the prime time ratings we’re seeing the most dramatic decrease. It went straight up against two very significant debates. Another one of our prime time games on Thursday night was on the NFL Network, as opposed to a network, which will always get a lower rating. There are a lot of factors to be considered.”

ON THE AIR

TNA received an answer to its SOS call. Anthem Sports & Entertainment, parent company of Fight Network, confirmed that it has stepped in to offer a working capital loan to fund the operations for TNA Impact Wrestling. The channel, which is a licensee of TNA programming for broadcast in the US, Canada and other international markets, also offered to provide TNA Impact Wrestling with funding to repay the loans made by company president Billy Corgan. “TNA is a strong property for Fight Network and as a licensee and global distribution partnerwe have a keen interest in seeing the company not only survive but continue to grow and thrive, alongside our own growth,” said Leonard Asper, CEO of Anthem. “We are hopeful that the company can soon get back to doing what it does best, which is to produce great wrestling content.”

ESPN locked in both Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon to multi-year extensions just in time for the 15-year anniversary of Pardon the Interruption. The co-hosts have been with PTI since the daily sports news and discussion show debuted on October 17, 2001.

FS1 is partnering up with NASCAR Productions to present the second season of documentary series Beyond the Wheel as part of FS1’s NASCAR RACE HUB. The first film in the series premieres on Oct. 26 at 6p during NASCAR RACE HUB on FS1. Topics this year will include: Bonneville 71 detailing how NASCAR Hall of Fame driver Bobby Isaac set 28 land speed records with a banned Dodge Charger Daytona on the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1971; Suenos de NASCAR following NASCAR XFINITY Series driver Daniel Suarez from his roots in Monterrey, Mexico, to his rise in the sports; and Miracle at Daytona  The Tiny Lund Story recounts how DeWayne “Tiny” Lund rescued fellow driver Marvin Panch from his burning Maserati at Daytona International Speedway before going on to win Daytona days later.

Tennis Channel served up plans for the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore, pitting the top eight singles players and doubles teams in women’s tennis. The network will serve as the primary home of the event from Oct. 23-30 with over 20 live hours. The network’s on-air team will feature Mary Carillo, along with coach Paul Annacone, Tracy Austin and Lindsay Davenport.

Time for ski season. NBC Sports Group launched coverage of the 2016-17 FIS World Cup skiing season with this weekend’s giant slalom event from Soelden, Austria, and US Olympic gold medalists Mikaela Shiffrin and Ted Ligety both slated to compete. NBCSN offers coverage of the men’s giant slalom race on Sunday at 9:30p with Universal HD televising the women’s giant slalom event on Saturday at 3p. Bill Doleman will call this weekend’s action, alongside analyst Steve Porino.

On the local front, the Reds locked in a 15-year extension of their local television broadcast rights deal with FOX Sports Ohio. The agreement begins in 2018 and gives the club an equity stake in the RSN.

Nordic broadcaster MTG locked in NFL media rights in a five-year extension. The deal sees MTG carry NFL television coverage in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden in the package, which includes regular season games, playoffs and the Super Bowl.

In the instances where sideline issues are reported in NFL games, we work closely with the NFL to quickly address and resolve.” Meanwhile, the league noted that “Microsoft is an integral, strategic partner of the NFL and implementing their technology on our sidelines has increased the efficiency and speed of collaboration between coaches and players to an all-time high.”
