10/24/19: Rick Fox departs den; Breaking down the eNASCAR Pro League season; ReKTGlobal nabs FullCube

Thursday, October 24, 2019

It’s the end of the road for Rick Fox with the esports team he co-founded in Echo Fox. Newsweek reports that Fox agreed to a private settlement agreement with Echo Fox shareholder Vision Esports, that will end lawsuits from both Fox and Vision Esports, after accusations of mismanagement from both sides. Reports suggest that Fox will now shift his attention to launch Twin Galaxies International with longtime associate Jace Hall.

“I have chosen to leave Echo Fox, the esports company that I founded, as a method to end the turbulent fighting and instead just continue to advance my visionary interest in being involved in a number of forward-thinking opportunities in the video game space with other strong, credible partners that share my values,” Fox told the publication.

He added, “On the court and in the business world, teammates are everything and there must be unity and a shared sense of purpose in order to succeed. In the case of Echo Fox, the significant difference of values, ethics and commitment to integrity was very problematic and damaging. I have shared my thoughts on this in my past statements and court filings, and sincerely hope that my experience can help provide further insight for people who should of course make their own judgements and determinations. I have learned some very painful lessons, and am relieved to now be moving on towards more positive business experiences.”

READYUP GAMES OF THE WEEK

POWER PLAYERS – Colin Smith

Last night saw the conclusion of the eNASCAR Heat Pro League season, as Team Penske Esports, Stewart-Haas Gaming, Leavine Family Gaming, and JR Motorsports battled it in the studios at NASCAR Productions in Charlotte. The eNASCAR Heat Pro League, a collaboration between NASCAR, RTA and 704Games, served as NASCAR’s first-ever esports league on consoles. In its first year, the league featured 14 teams and 28 gamers, each owned and operated by prominent NASCAR race teams with each team fielding two drivers. Cynopsis asked Colin Smith, President of 704Games, about the debut season.

Smith on the biggest takeaway: With this being our first significant step into the esports space, we weren’t exactly sure what to expect.  We knew there was a large online racing community that had an appetite to compete, but I don’t think any of us knew how passionate this community really was.  I also don’t think we really knew how many people and partners would have a shared interest in learning about this community of gamers, and how they perceive their fandom of NASCAR. It’s been an incredible journey with NASCAR and the Race Teams in building the league from the bottom up, and it’s taken lot of work from a lot of people to make it happen.

On what surprised him: I would say how knowledgeable and tactical the gamers are when it comes to racing online (car set-ups/tuning, fuel strategy, racing lines, etc.). A lot of the gamers that registered for the Pro League were former racers that for one reason or another had to give up their passion, and this is one way of staying competitive and fueling that fire. We will break down a race with the winners each week and it is amazing to see the time and hours they have committed to fine-tuning their strategy and runs. Esports within the racing genre is incredibly interesting as there are so many 1:1 ratios of characteristics that help make great drivers in both the real and virtual worlds.

On the evolution from the season: We learned so much from Season 1, and we are now in the process of bringing the three stakeholder groups (704Games, the Race Team Alliance and NASCAR) together to build the road map for Season 2. At the top of the list is creating a prize pool that awards weekly podium finishes, bringing 1-2 new teams into the league, securing an entitlement partner that can be a part of helping create that road map and bringing more awareness to the league, and of course continuing to drive growth in our audience numbers. We expect to bring some noticeable changes to the league in terms of schedule, structure and how the championship is determined, with our eyes on making the league more entertaining and fun to watch week-to-week.

On feedback from NASCAR, its teams and partners: That everything is perfect and to not change a thing. Just kidding. Like many others wading into the competitive gaming space for the first time, we really didn’t know what to expect for Season 1. We are walking away from the Championship event with our heads held high, but knowing we have a lot of work still to do. The race teams and NASCAR have been great partners and everyone wants to see the Pro League grow and expand. Everyone realizes and agrees that the NASCAR Heat game and the Pro League are platforms that can help speak to and help cultivate the next generation of NASCAR fans and possibly even future racers.

ROSTER MOVES

Former Zynga CMO Doug Scott joined Twitch to serve as CMO of the organization. “Doug has deep experience extending brands into new markets across games and entertainment industries, making him the ideal fit to lead Twitch’s marketing strategy,” said Twitch COO Sara Clemens. “As Twitch continues to grow, Doug will play an integral role in extending the brand beyond endemic audiences, supporting our incredible creators and expanding our presence in global markets.”

Kroenke Sports & Entertainment reportedly hired former YouTube and Riot Games staffer Alex Rubens as well as ESPN senior editor Ryan Garfat to lead esports operations for the Los Angeles Gladiators of the Overwatch League and the Los Angeles Guerillas of the upcoming Call of Duty League, per ESPN. The report states that Rubens and Garfat are the first hires in the new front office for the Kroenke’s esports ventures.

Misfits Gaming appointed Matt Bailey to Senior Director, Sponsorship Sales and Services where he joins a team responsible for the organization’s global sales and partner relations. The appointment marks Misfits Gaming’s first senior commercial team hire in Europe – home of Misfits Gaming’s League of Legends team, competing in the League of Legends European Championship (LEC). Bailey joins Misfits Gaming from InCrowd Sports.
