Targeting millennials longing for the iconic Nickelodeon shows of their childhood, the network on October 5 will launch retro-programmed The Splat as a nightly 10p-6a block on TeenNick and across social media platforms, and a dedicated website. Featured ‘90s shows include Kenan & Kel, Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy and Hey Arnold! “We designed The Splat with fans and their requests in mind, which means we’re bringing together these beloved series and a high level of digital engagement to give fans a retro media experience they can’t get anywhere else,” said Cyma Zarghami, President of Viacom Kids and Family Group.
 
Day of Atonement: Tribune Media’s flagship station WGN-TV Chicago has apologized for including an offensive image – that of a star of David labeled “Jude,” a badge Jews were forced to wear in concentration camps and elsewhere – in its report on the Yom Kippur holiday. After outcry from viewers, WGN GM and news director Jennifer Lyons issued a formal apology, noting: “This was an unfortunate mistake. Ignorance is not an excuse. We are extremely embarrassed and we deeply apologize to our viewers and to the Jewish community for this mistake.”

Self-proclaimed paranormal investigators Mark and Debby Constantino, who made frequent appearances on Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures, were killed along with a third man, in what’s being reported as an apparent murder-suicide. The tragedy unfolded in a Nevada apartment on Tuesday.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Conrad Green, longtime exec producer of Dancing With The Stars, inked a one-year development deal with Fox. Green will develop original formats and executive produce unscripted series.

Dustin Hoffman and Richard Madden (Game of Thrones) are on tap to star in new eight-part drama Medici: Masters Of Florence, chronicling the rise of the Medici family and the Italian Renaissance. From Frank Spotnitz’s Big Light Productions and Lux Vide, the series was co-created by Spotnitz and Nicholas Meyer and exec-produced with Matilde and Luca Bernabei.

Production is underway on Hallmark Channel’s Chesapeake Shores. The first film in a series is based on the novels of the same name by New York Times best-selling author Sherry Woods. Jesse Metcalfe (Dallas) stars alongside Meghan Ory (Once Upon A Time), Treat Williams (Everwood), Diane Ladd (Wild At Heart) and Barbara Niven (Debbie Macomber’s Cedar Cove).

Talpa, the ITV-owned production company behind The Voice, is bringing another reality competition, this time in the dancing realm, to the States. Dance, Dance, Dance, which features celebrities recreating dance routines from film, musicals and music videos, initially launched in the Netherlands.

NBC is developing Say Uncles, a comedy from actor/comedian Elon Gold (Stacked), Universal TV and Aggregate Films. The series is based on Gold’s real-life experiences juggling his meddling brothers and his impressionable kids.

Marblemedia and Popmania are developing a series to find the next teen pop sensation. Called Popmania: Life Under The Mic, the docu-reality series follows the lives of three teen girls as they navigate the highs and lows of having a career in pop music. The show is exec-produced by marblemedia’s Mark J.W. Bishop, Matt Hornburg and Miklos Perlus along with Popmania’s Anita Camarata-Jewison and A&R executive Ron Fair.

Following a four-week test run, Debmar-Mercury is shopping talk show T.D. Jakes with plans for a national launch next fall, according to Broadcasting & Cable. According to Debmar-Mercury, T.D. Jakes grew by 33 percent in households, 157 percnt among W25-54 and 160 among A25-54 from start to finish across its four Tegna markets: WFAA Dallas, WXIA Atlanta, KARE Minneapolis, and WKYC Cleveland.

COMING UP

ABC pushed back the season premiere of Beyond the Tank by a week, to Tuesday, October 6, and will instead run a repeat next Tuesday of the premiere episode of new drama Quantico, which debuts this Sunday at 10p.

Alison Sweeney (Murder She Baked) makes her Hallmark Channel debut as star and exec producer of the original movie Love On The Air, which premieres Saturday, September 26, at 9p. Sweeney plays a radio host who moves to Chicago for her boyfriend and a new hosting gig, which ultimately leads to the quick demise of her relationship.

Jimmy Kimmel is in a New York state of mind. His ABC late-night show is headed to Brooklyn for a week beginning Monday, October 19. This will be the second time the host brings the show back to his hometown. The lineup of guests includes Jay Z, Bill Murray, Michael J. Fox, Bradley Cooper, American Ballet Theater Principal Ballerina Misty Copeland and Howard Stern.

Russian President Vladimir Putin sat down for a rare interview that will air for the season premiere of 60 Minutes on Sunday, September 27, at 7:30p. In the interview, with Charlie Rose, Putin claims he does not fit the label of “czar” many Americans have pinned on him.

Preceding the debut of Telemundo’s drama series Celia on Tuesday, October 13 at 8p, the network will pay homage to legendary Cuban singer Celia Cruz with a musical tribute during the first-ever Latin American Music Awards, live from the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, on Thursday, October 8 at 9p.

First Lady Michelle Obama guests in a special episode of Disney Junior’s Doc McStuffins on Monday, October 5, at 9a. Doc and the toys travel to Washington, DC, when the First Lady those who are making a difference in their community to the White House to be honored in a special ceremony. While there, she appoints Doc the official "toy doctor" for the White House.

NEW SERIES

GSN is riffing off of its popular series Skin Wars with a new eight-ep series, Skin Wars: Fresh Paint. Hosted by master of transformation RuPaul Charles, a judge on Skin Wars, the new series pits contestants against each other in body painting competitions.

Cooking Channel picked up the Sarah Graham’s Food Safari, featuring the popular food writer and set in various African locales, where Graham explores the continent’s most interesting and exciting food. The series was produced by Okuhle Media for M-Net and brokered through UK firm DCD Rights. A premiere is planned for 2016.

RETURNING SHOWS

More murder and mayhem, Beverly Hills style, are on the way from Lifetime. The network gave the go-ahead for a fourth season of Devious Maids, which will return next year. Last season, the show helped Lifetime rank as the No. 2 cable net with scripted programming in the Monday 9-10p time period.

Dr. Susan Kelleher and company that includes big cats, hedgehogs, birds, rabbits and more will return for a second season of Dr. K’s Exotic Animal ER on Nat Geo Wild. The season kicks off Saturday, October 3, at 9p.

The Weather Channel’s cross-platform pop science series 3 Scientists Walk into a Bar returns Sunday, October 4, at 10p. The show uncovers the science behind natural phenomena and weather patterns through a series of explainers, interactive games and experiments.

Pivot will premiere season 2 of environmental adventure series The Operatives on Sunday, October 18, at 10p. The season will showcases10 new hour-long episodes documenting the missions of eco-warrior Pete Bethune and his hand-picked team of military elite.

CASTING

Maggie Gyllenhaal will star opposite James Franco in the HBO drama pilot The Deuce, from David Simon. Gyllenhaal is also produce the show, which follows the legalization and rise of the porn industry. The Deuce is written and exec-produced by Simon and George Pelecanos, and directed by Michelle MacLaren (Breaking Bad).

OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network and Lionsgate set the cast for new original drama series Greenleaf, from writer/producer Craig Wright (Six Feet Under). The ensemble features Keith David, Lynn Whitfield, Merle Dandridge, Lamman Rucker, Deborah Joy Winans, Tye White, Kim Hawthorne and Desiree RossOprah Winfrey will appear in the series in a recurring role. Production begins in Atlanta in October with a 2016 scheduled premiere.

AMC Networks and Rentrak are co-developing methods to measure cross-platform viewing of AMC’s programming. They will implement Rentrak’s television and VOD-data, plus census-level data collected from AMC’s digital platforms. These insights will ultimately help AMC better service their advertisers, the network notes.

GLOBAL GOINGS-ON

UK broadcasters are keen on US dramas. Channel 4’s E4 network has acquired Ryan Murphy’s black comedy Scream Queens, which debuted in the U.S. on Tuesday, and pan-European pay TV company Sky’s Sky Living picked up NBC mystery action series Blindspot.

9 Story Media Group snagged a litter of international sales for animated series Peg + Cat. Canada’s Treehouse acquired the second season to the series, while Super RTL (Germany) and Canal+ Family and Piwi+ (France and French-speaking territories) picked up an additional 40 episodes of season one. Other takers include Tiny Pop (UK), ABC TV (Australia), TVNZ (New Zealand), TG4 (Ireland), Super RTL (Germany and German-speaking Europe), SVT (Sweden) and Discovery Kids (Latin America).

Mexican family network Canal Once will premiere original miniseries Requiem por Leona Vicario, the story of the woman who was instrumental in Mexico’s war for independence from Spain, beginning Tuesday, September 29, at 9p.

Federation Entertainment sold primetime thriller Hostages to German pay TV channel RTL Crime, just as the series finishes shooting its second season.

RATINGS

Brian Williams’ return to the airwaves appears to have been met with viewer forgiveness. His coverage for MSNBC of the Pope’s arrival in the US on Tuesday drew 526,000 viewers from 3-5p, a 57 percent rise in the time slot over the previous four weeks, according to Nielsen data.

Food Network’s Worst Cooks in America: Celebrity Edition premiered Wednesday night to a .7 rating A25-54 (658,000 impressions), up 109 versus year-ago and ranking 3rd in the 9p time slot among cable. The season premiere also drew a .7 rating among A25-34 (221,000 impressions), a gain of 640 percent versus last year.

The season 2 premiere of Telemundo’s Senora Acero ranks as the No. 1 Spanish-language primetime program among A18-49, averaging 1.4 million viewers in the demographic and 2.4 million total viewers, according to Nielsen.
