09/24/14: YouTube steps up role in NASCAR’s Chase; FOX Sports unveils college basketball slate; HBO Sports gets in the ring with Canelo Alvarez


Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 24, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

YouTube is changing its role with the NASCAR crew, and – for the first time ever – will offer race fans the opportunity to view full-length replays of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races on NASCAR’s official YouTube channel for free. Complete race replays of each Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup race broadcast will be offered the week following the event. Fans may visit the playlist entitled, “Full NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race Replays  2014” on the channel’s landing page to access the videos.
“Enhancing the fan experience through NASCAR’s digital properties is at the core of everything we do, and providing free, full-length race replays on YouTube gives our fans another easy way to interact with the sport,” said Colin Smith, managing director of NASCAR Digital Media.

FOX Sports laid out its college basketball plans for this season, hosting over 200 men’s and women’s games this season featuring the Big East, Pac-12, Conference USA and Big 12. The company will also be the home of three regular-season tournaments, the entire Big East men’s tournament, the Conference USA men’s championship game, the BIG EAST women’s tournament semifinals and final and the full Big 12 women’s tournament. This season will now see a minimum of 10 games slated for the FOX broadcast network  more than ever before. College basketball coverage begins Nov. 4, with an exhibition between Northwood/Villanova on FOX Sports 1 at 7p and the regular season tipping off on Nov. 16 with Chicago State/Creighton. Gus Johnson and analyst Bill Raftery return to serve as FOX Sports’ lead college basketball broadcast tandem.

HBO Sports struck a deal with Golden Boy Promotions boxer Canelo Alvarez to carry the fighter’s matches. Canelo has previously fought seven times on HBO platforms in his pro career. “I’m thrilled to be part of this historic agreement between Canelo Álvarez and HBO Sports, an agreement that marks another major step in Golden Boy Promotions’ primary goalto give boxing fans the fights they want to see,” said Oscar de la Hoya, founder of Golden Boy Promotions. “Canelo is the best young fighter in the sport, and this move will help line him up to fight top opponents in the sport for many years to come.”

Speaking of Oscar de la Hoya, NUVOtv features an interview with the boxing legend on Thursday’s episode of Mario Lopez One-on-One at 10p. The two will discuss how he got started in boxing, his family and his favorite and least favorite opponents in the ring.

The NHL made its partnership with EPIX official, announcing a deal to produce and distribute a two-part original series that will debut on EPIX in December featuring the Blackhawks and Capitals as they prepare to compete in the 2015 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic as well as the Kings and Sharks readying for the 2015 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series. The series will be produced by Ross Greenburg and offer “an exclusive look inside the world of the NHL, with strategically placed cameras and microphones providing an all-access pass to players’ homes, locker rooms, training rooms, and the arena.”

The Bears victory on Monday Night Football ranked as the top telecast of the night across cable and broadcast among the key male demos and adults 18-34 for ESPN. The contest drew an 8.4 household US rating, according to Nielsen, to represent 13,265,000 viewers. In Chicago, the game delivered a 17.5 rating on ESPN and a 14.6 on WCIU-IND, for a combined 32.1 rating in the market. In New York, the game delivered a 8.1 rating on ESPN and a 3.6 on WPIX-CW, for a combined 11.7 rating in the market.

Meanwhile, NBC Sports reports that NBCSN’s coverage of the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix averaged 406,000 viewers for a 58% markup over the same race in 2013. Through nine races, the channel is averaging 309,000 viewers, up 92% from the first nine races in 2013 on the network.

NFL Network will carry the latest episode of A Football Life on Friday at 9p, this time focusing on the life and legacy of the late Sean Taylor. The one-hour, NFL Films-produced Sean Taylor: A Football Life features interviews with family members such as his father Pete Taylor, siblings Monika Martin, Sasha Johnson and Jamal Johnson, and cousin David Walsh; former teammates such as Clinton Portis, Santana Moss and Ryan Clark; and former coaches Joe Gibbs and Gregg Williams. In addition, the program features an interview with Taylor’s fiancee, Jackie Garcia-Haley  the first interview she has conducted regarding her late fiancée.
Telemundo lined up a one hour special, Futbol Americano: Celebrando El Mes de la Herencia Hispana, for Sept. 27 at 4p. The program will be hosted by Karim Mendiburu and Leti Coo with a focus on the fusion of the Hispanic culture with football, interviews with Hispanic stars and the growing relationship between the Hispanic community and the game.

Ashworth Golf announced the Ashworth Majors Roundtable, a long-form television production that will air on Back9Network on Oct. 1 at 8p. The program will feature all six of the brand’s major champions and tour staff professionals: Fred Couples, Justin Rose, Retief Goosen, Stewart Cink, Justin Leonard and Paul Azinger and “takes viewers inside the ropes as the players relive the moments that forever changed their lives.”
Intersport’s College Football’s Open Season presented by Mercedes-Benz is slated to examine the SEC in two sets of back-to-back 30-minute shows. The program will run on CBS, with each of the Sept. 27 episodes (airing at 2p) offering an early-season look at every SEC team. The Nov. 15 episodes will then spotlight, among other stories, Bret Bielema and Arkansas as they travel to AT&T (Cowboy) Stadium to play Texas A&M, and new Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason as he prepares his team to play Georgia.


Learfield Sports locked in an extension of its partnership with Army Athletics. The deal runs through the 2018-19 season as part of the five years extension, with all aspects of the comprehensive rights agreement managed by Learfield’s local entity, Army Sports Properties.

PlainsCapital Bank signed on as presenting sponsor for the 2014 and 2015 Battle for the Iron Skillet football matchup pitting SMU and TCU. The Mustangs’ Gerald J. Ford Stadium will play host to the Horned Frogs this year on Saturday, Sept. 27  marking their 94th meeting.


RyderCup.com, managed by Turner Sports in partnership with the PGA of America and European Tour, lined up online, mobile and social coverage of the 2014 event through Sept. 28. Content includes live streaming video, interactive leaderboard updates, live radio commentary, video alerts and social interaction. The Ryder Cup LIVE video player will also include coverage of the opening and closing ceremonies. The Ryder Cup LIVE video announce team will include host Vince Cellini, analyst Michael Breed and Brian Katrek as course reporter.  The PGA of America, Samsung and Turner Sports have also partnered to unveil the Ryder Cup TV App  designed exclusively for the Samsung Smart TV platform  that offers "Broadcast Mode," allowing users to complement and customize their viewing experience.

The Topps Company, Inc. and Bloomberg Sports formally unveiled their partnership to offer custom-designed advanced analytics on select trading card offerings for 2014. The new-look analytics have been featured on the backs of Topps Major League Soccer cards, which launched earlier this season, and content will be showcased now on the back of the 2014 Bowman Chrome Baseball, which releases at the end of September, and other select 2014 Bowman trading card products. The Bowman Chrome sets will feature six different analytical templates created by Bloomberg Sports, including spray charts that document veteran power hitters’ home run locations and strikeout pitchers’ pitch selections

The NFL pre-season, college football, the FIBA World Cup, and MLB’s pennant race all helped push ESPN to a record-setting August in the digital sports category, according to comScore. ESPN hit 82.4 million unique users across computers, smartphones and tablets, the largest total for a single month in category history and an increase of 42% over year ago numbers.
