IN THE NEWS

Michael Eisner and his Tornante Company are being sued for breach of contract and fraud. Former Judge Judy director Jerry Kupcinet alleges he was booted from a show he helped create, just-launched syndicated court show Judge Faith, receiving no compensation for three months of work on the pilot. Trifecta Entertainment and its CEO Hank Cohen were also named in the suit.

Rocsi Diaz’s Entertainment Tonight days are numbered. “As both Rocsi and ET have grown and evolved over the years, she has elected to pursue hosting opportunities that are available at the start of the year,” said the show. Diaz, a correspondent and weekend host, had been with the entertainment news magazine for two years.

J.J. Abrams (Lost) will receive the Visual Effects Society’s Visionary Award, for “his expert blending of visual effects, evocative characters and a remarkable imagination.” The 13th Annual VES Awards takes place February 4 at the Beverly Hilton.

Simulmedia and Nielsen signed a development agreement to research “long tail” TV network measurement, to capture audience activity that goes unmeasured on niche cable nets. “We have found valuable blocks of audiences watching programs that may be under the radar of many network TV buyers,” said Simulmedia CEO Dave  Morgan. “This research will surface both the value of these networks and their audiences to brands.”

On that note, for more on measurement, register for today’s Cynopsis webinar, “Understanding The Latest Ratings Advancements,” with experts from Nielsen, Simulmedia, Rentrak, Horizon Media and Crown Media Family Networks.

Pascal Breton is thinking big. The French TV exec has partnered with film and television producers and showrunners to establish Federation Entertainment, a “fully-integrated ‘mini-studio’ created as a new model to control production, financing and distribution of original straight-to-series event programming.” Breton will head the studio; Ashley Stern, former VP of development and production at Ensemble Entertainment, will run the LA office. Netflix has commissioned French series Marseilles from the fledgling company.

Music Choice has partnered with Established 1980 Inc. and will feature singer Estelle in the multi-platform video and music network’s “Take Back Your Music” branding campaign. The effort, launched last summer, has featured artists including Robin Thicke and Florida Georgia Line.

Sportsman Channel is partnering with Bear Archery for a sweepstakes running through Sunday, October 12. Visitors to www.thesportsmanchannel.com can enter for a chance to win the company’s new “Arena” bow. In conjunction with the contest, Sportsman will run Bear-related programming, starting with documentary Fred Bear: Father of Bowhunting tonight at 7p.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Discovery Communications and Liberty Global closed their deal to jointly acquire independent giant All3Media, consisting of 19 production companies across Europe and the U.S. Preserving its operating model, All3Media will continue to operate with an independent executive management team. That team will not, however, include CEO Farah Ramzan Golant, who said, “I have determined that this is the right time to leave the company to pursue a new challenge.” Co-founders of All3Media Steve Morrison, Jules Burns and David Liddiment are retiring from All3Media’s Board of Directors; Morrison will serve as a special advisor to the joint venture’s board, which will have equal representation from Discovery and Liberty.

BBC Wordwide is acquiring a 35 percent stake in production company Lookout Point, with a five-year minimum distribution and co-production agreement. The companies have partnered on productions in the past, including Ripper Street and Parade’s End. Joining Lookout: BBCW director of commercial and legal affairs Saul Venit becomes COO, and Industry Media’s Seb Shoor hops aboard as head of business affairs.

USA gave a pilot order to an adaptation of Telemundo hit telenovela La Reina del Sur (The Queen of the South). Fox Television Studios is producing the drama, about a woman trying to bring down the leader of a drug ring.

Escape Your Life, a social experiment format from Red Arrow International, is in the early stages of production for TNT. In the reality show, couples get a fresh start in a new location, then must decide after six weeks whether to stay in their new lives or go back to their old ones.

Kapital Entertainment’s Aaron Kaplan and Nastaran Dibai (Malibu Country) are developing Follow Your Heart, from Warner Bros. Television, for ABC. Comedy centers on a widow who falls for a man who, unbeknownst to her, was the recipient of her late husband’s heart.

BRANDS & ADVERTISING

State Farm yanked its ad featuring Saturday Night Live alum Rob Schneider, in response to a social media campaign objecting to the anti-vaccine activist’s “dangerous opinions.” The insurance company’s director of public affairs, Phil Supple, told PRWeek the ad “has unintentionally been used as a platform for discussion unrelated to the products and services we provide.”

Coke, Pepsi and Dr. Pepper want everyone to lighten up. Execs from Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Dr Pepper Snapple announced at the Clinton Global Initiative on Tuesday a pledge to “promote calorie awareness,” and increase consumer awareness of no- and lower-calories beverages and smaller portion sizes. Former President Bill Clinton called the move “a critical step in our ongoing fight against obesity.”

The Federal Trade Commission sent warning letters to a list of over 60 companies, including 20 of the largest advertisers in the country, that failed to make adequate disclosures in television and print ads. The FTC recommended that the companies review ads to make sure any necessary disclosures are “clear and conspicuous.”  Examples of offending material: claims of a “risk-free” trial period, weight-loss testimonials and incomplete price quotes.

AMC Networks International is rebranding Spain’s CTK to Sundance Channel. “Spain continues to be one of our biggest priority expansion markets in Western Europe,” said Bruce Tuchman, president of AMC Global and Sundance Channel Global.

Actress/singer Rita Ora (Fifty Shades of Grey) will join season four of The Voice UK, returning to BBC One in January. Tom Jones, will.i.am and Ricky Wilson will be back for their second go-rounds; Orr replaces a touring Kylie Minogue.
