CBS announced Wednesday it’s changing its rating reporting system for the upcoming fall season. Along with fast affiliate numbers, the net will report Live+7 Day projections. “C7 deals were a significant part of our Upfront negotiations this year, and we are doing more C7 deals all the time,” said CBS Corp. president and CEO Les Moonves. “As technologies continue to improve audience measurement across all platforms, these more precise metrics are becoming the industry standard.”

IN THE NEWS

TNT struck a deal with Marvel for the network television premieres of the next five movies from Marvel Studios, including upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron, to air two years after theatrical releases. “These movies will play a key role in TNT’s long-term success, especially among key adult demos,” said Deborah K. Bradley, SVP, head of program acquisitions, content strategy and licensing for Turner

Discovery Communications is taking a controlling interest The Hub, ending its partnership with Hasbro, reports the The Wall Street Journal. The kiddie net will be rebranded as a destination for parents as well as children, sources told WSJ, with Hasbro retaining a stake and controlling the 9a-3p hours. A rebrand to Discovery Family could take place as early as 4Q14.

Veria Living is changing its name to Z Living. The move reflects the health and wellness net’s global expansion by aligning it with its largest programming affiliate and worldwide distribution partner, Zee Entertainment. “The desire for this type of content, on a global level, far exceeded even our expectations,” said Z Living CEO Eric Sherman. The linear channel will be launching in Eastern Europe, Russia, the Middle East and the Caribbean by year’s end.

Saturday Night Live alum Bill (“Stefon”) Hader will host the late night sketch show on October 11. Irish singer Hozier (“Take Me to Church”) is the musical guest.

Eighty-one percent of all primetime episodes in the 2013-2014 network television season and the 2013 cable season were directed by Caucasians, and 14 percent by women, according to a new survey conducted by the Directors Guild of America. White males directed 69 percent of the 3500 episodes counted, minority males accounted for 17 percent, white women directed 12 percent and minority females oversaw a meager 2 percent. “It can be shockingly difficult to convince the people who control hiring to make even small improvements to their hiring practices,” said DGA president Paris Barclay. “It’s time for the people who make the hiring decisions…to stop making excuses.”

America’s Funniest Home Videos is partnering with Maker Studios on a YouTube initiative to create original short-form programming for YouTube stars, including ShayFV, a weekly clip show featuring Shay “Shay Carl” Butler. The deal extends a relationship between Maker and Vin Di Bona Productions, creator of AFV; ABC series returns for season 25 Sunday, October 5 at 7p.

ABC Family boasts its “100 Days Until Christmas” graphic campaign on its “25 Days of Christmas” Facebook page received 182,000 shares, making it the net’s most-shared post ever.

Wednesday was D-Day – as in Digital – for A+E Networks.  The company’s TV Everywhere apps hit 22 million downloads, the same day as the announcement its A&E, History and Lifetime apps launched on Amazon Fire TV. “It’s a great representation of our commitment to push the digital boundaries for our audiences,” said Dan Suratt, EVP, Digital Media and Brand & Content Licensing.

New York Festivals Television & Film Awards will honor Ken Aagaard, EVP, Operations, Engineering & Production Services, CBS Sports, with its 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award. The award will be presented on April 15, 2015 at the annual NAB show.

Betsy Thomas has joined NBC comedy Bad Judge as exec producer/showrunner. She replaces Liz Brixius. The Universal Television series starring Kate Walsh premieres Thursday, October 2 at 9p.

Bristow Global Media announced production of a yet-to-be-named docu-series about hockey wives, slated for launch on Canada’s W Network in February 2015.

Athletes behaving badly now have a home, on TMZ Hollywood Sports, premiering Monday, September 29 on REELZ. Weekday-at-8p gossip show will offer “a fun look at the collision of worlds where sports (with no Xs and Os) meets celebrity,” said net CEO Stan E. Hubbard.

Are the wheels in motion for another annihilation of life on Earth? Carroll. Grab a martini and head for the bunker for this special from Tangled Bank Studios, premiering Sunday, November 30 at 8p.

Scientists on the trail of the rare Siberian tiger are the focus of documentary Last Tiger Standing, a Discovery Channel/BBC One co-production airing Thursday, September 25 at 10p.

CASTING

James D’Arcy (Let’s Be Cops) has been added to the cast of upcoming ABC drama Agent Carter as Edwin Jarvis, butler to Howard Stark.

Activist Gloria Steinem guests on season six of CBS’s The Good Wife as herself. “I made a fool of myself and then had to email her and had to apologize,” star-struck Wife star Julianna Margulies said on Live! With Kelly and Michael.

Sam Richardson jumps from recurring to series regular on season four of HBO’s Veep. Richardson plays an aide of Selina’s.

BRANDS AND ADVERTISING

Ad spending on broadcast network TV was down 7.2 percent for the second quarter, reported Kantar Media, in part due to fewer NCAA March Madness and NBA playoff games. Cable TV spending was a different story, rising 9.3 percent in the quarter from the year before, given an assist by the World Cup and semi-final games of the NCAA tournament that aired on cable for the first time. Spanish-language TV spending got an even bigger boost from the World Cup, seeing a 42 percent jump.

As part of its continuing effort to trim marketing costs, Procter & Gamble posted a request on the NASA web site to “collect ideas” for producing moving images for TV commercials and digital video “at a cost that is significantly lower than today’s average.”  A P&G rep told AdAge the post was part of the company’s move to look for “innovative new methods of producing content and cost savings with production.”

DISTRIBUTION AND CARRIAGE

UK factual distributor Scorpion TV acquired three new documentaries: SOTF science film Survival of the Fabulous, Garden Thieves Boobs, about a model’s attempt to further her career via breast enlargement, and Een van de jongens A Goat for a Vote, the story of a school election in Kenya.

INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS

UK’s ITV has scrapped its plans for Rising Star. The interactive singing competition from Keshet International saw strong ratings in some countries but didn’t live up to expectations in others, including the U.S., where it ran on ABC this summer. “As a commercial broadcaster, we always need to be as confident as possible about the potential ratings of any new programme format that we have acquired,” an ITV spokesperson told Deadline.

HAPPY NEWS
