NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
YouTube and Maker Studios star PewDiePie joined MLG.tv to exclusively air his podcast BroKen. The Swedish web celeb, whose real name is Felix Kjellberg, will debut new episodes on his own channel at mlg.tv/pewdiepie, and viewers can use @MLG and the hashtag #BroKen to interact with the stream or chat feature on the channel. MLG.tv showcases digital content from gaming and eSports networks, with more than 120 experts from the space.
 
With Netflix’s saying “Bonjour” to France for the first time yesterday, the streaming service also managed to sign a set-top box distribution deal with the Bouyges’ Bbox Sensation to roll out in November. Variety reports Bouygues is one of France’s five ISPs, and ranks fourth in number of subscribers. Netflix’s biggest competitor is Canal PlusCanalPlay, which holds deals with four of the ISPs.
 
VEVO introduced the new DSCVR program yesterday, a way to connect a new artist each week with an exclusive interview or live performance with viewers. The first artist in the series features Betty Who and is available to view on VEVO. A new episode will premiere every Monday, spotlighting other artists like Chet Flaker and Mary Lambert.
 
Discovery Digital Networks
debuted a new series from Animalist called Breaking Trail with Coyote Peterson. The show follows Peterson as he discovers creatures that live across the United States. The first three episodes became available yesterday on Animalist and its YouTube channel, with a new ep premiering every Tuesday and Thursday.
 
Comedy Central unveiled the new web series from CC: Studios, called 300 Sunnyside, yesterday. The series follow a group of six roommates who argue too much about their existence. The entire noisy show was made available on its website and mobile app.

NBC’s TODAY will celebrate the first anniversary of its digital studio The Orange Room Show hosted by Carson Daly with a live event. The hour-long stream will begin at 7.20a ET today, at TODAY.com, with an acoustic performance from Phillip Phillips and other surprise guests. Viewers can share photos of their enthusiasm for Orange Room with #SeeingOrange, and TODAY hosts and producers will take live questions from Twitter.
 
BBC Click
, the tech program from BBC World News, will commemorate its 750th edition with the launch of a series of short films distributed through social media. The one-to-two minute videos will fall into three categories: prototype development-themed Click Starter, industry insights Click Bytes, and an intro of Click’s weekend show, called Click Bait. A new vid will be released weekly on Click’s social platforms and through its new YouTube channel, which also went live this week. “With more than 2.5 million follower on Twitter and Facebook, we know Click viewers are just as happy exploring tech with us on social media as they are tuning in via BBC World News TV,” Editor Simon Hancock said.
 
Chris Brown takes over multi-platform video and music net Music Choice Play today. Fans decide which of the recording artist’s videos will air, and You & A, at 7:30p, will focus on his upcoming sixth album, “X.” Brown is the number one artist on Music Choice Video On Demand since its 2005 launch.
 
POV debuted six new interactive documentary shorts on PBS online yesterday, exploring different social issues and using new technologies that “elevate nonfiction content into a creative art form,” said Adnaan Wasey, executive producer of POV Digital. Four of the projects were created by alumni of a POV Hackathon, a laboratory series providing mentoring for nonfiction media makers. The four docs available now include Empire, Fukushima: The Eternal Season, Immigrant Nation, and The Most Northern Place. The Whiteness Project: Inside the White Caucasian Box is available Sept. 29 and 89 Steps: A Chapter of Living Los Sures will bow at a later date. POV will also present three of the projects at the New York Film Festival’s Convergence program from Sept. 27-28.

Premium video is moving more toward programmatic, according to the fifth annual 2014 U.S. State Of the Video Industry report from Adap.tv. The study found that of the 350 media and marketing professionals surveyed, more than half of publishers said their premium inventory is for sale on programmatic platforms. “Once associated as a method toward the commodization of video, programmatic is actually driving material positive benefits for publishers,” Adap.tv and One by AOL CEO Toby Gabriner told Cynopsis. “This is likely due to the fact that there was a 60 percent jump in the number of publishers who now operate private marketplaces this year, compared to 2013.” The study also showed an increase in buyers shifting budgets away from broadcast (76 percent) and cable TV (40 percent). “Another big trend that we’re keeping a close eye on is the advent of data-driven or programmatic TV…with brands ahead of this trend at 60 percent stating they will apply programmatic techniques to broadcast TV in the coming year,” Gabriner added. 75% of the respondents said the industry needed more education about video viewability, bot fraud and ad placement/verification.
