09/05/17: Syfy cancels Dark Matter, orders final seasons of Killjoys

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
 
Amazon grabbed the Starsky and Hutch reboot from James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), with a script-to-series commitment. The project is Gunn’s first TV series via his Troll Court Entertainment.
 
True Detective got the official green light for season 3, with Jeremy Saulnier (The Green Room) set to direct with creator Nic Pizzolatto, who will continue as writer. Mahershala Ali (Moonight) will star in the HBO crime anthology, this season set in the Ozarks and taking place in 3 different time periods. HBO held off confirming the season until they nailed down a director.
 
Netflix, Damien Chazelle (La La Land) and IMG are partnering for 8-part musical drama The Eddy. Set in a Paris club, the series will feature dialogue in French, English and Arabic.

Reelz premieres 2 pop gossip shows on Friday, September 8: Broke & Famous focuses on reckless spender Johnny Depp at 8p, followed by US Weekly’s Famous Feuds, exploring the bad blood between Mariah Carey and Eminem, and Katy Perry and Taylor Swift.
 
Puerto Rican actress and dancer Roselyn Sanchez, TV personality Johnny Lozada and Spanish choreographer Javier “Poty” Castillo will serve as judges on season 5 of Univision dance competition Mira Quien Baila (Look Who’s Dancing), returning Sunday, September 17.
 
American Public Television is launching new nonfiction series Make48 in September on stations across the country. Teams compete to develop a new commercial product in a 48-hour “invent-a-thon” weekend, but don’t look for typical reality-TV conflict. “Make48’s educational product series is more like swimming with a pod of dolphins rather than being thrown into a tank of sharks,” said Make48 CEO Tom Gray. Tool company Stanley Black & Decker is exclusive production underwriter.
 
The fourth and final season of Disney XD’s Star Wars Rebels launches Monday, October with an hour-long episode that will air at 12:30a, 3a, 7:30a, 5:30p and 9p.

Today, the day the White House plans to announce its position on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy, Telemundo will air a special program analyzing the potential impact of the measure, featuring stories of undocumented workers around the country, along with commentary from policy and immigration experts. “The Dreamers are part of the spirit of this great country,” said Noticias Telemundo anchor Jose Diaz-Balart, who will host the show. “The White House decision could change the role of Latinos in the United States forever, especially for a generation that has always respected the rules.” Special airs at 8p.

Short-form ad unit spending is on the rise, reports Kantar Media, with $3.06 million dollars spent on 252 5- and 6-second spots since August 11, mostly on local TV stations. Last week, Fox announced it will sell 6-second spots in sports programming.
 
The Ad Council took its “Love Has No Labels” message to gaming convention PAX West in Seattle, launching a mobile geolocation game called The League of Extraordinary Humans. The game turned activists fighting for inclusion into virtual superheroes; real-life heroes included swimmer Diana Nyad, Jazz Jennings (I Am Jazz) and others.

Christopher Eccleston (The A Word) and Paula Malcomson (Ray Donovan) will star in BBC drama Come HomeKristopher Turner (Saving Hope) and Stephen Arbuckle (Flint) landed recurring roles on season 2 of USA’s Falling Water.

Hulu’s Too Funny to Fail, a documentary about the surprising crash and burn of 1996’s short-lived The Dana Carvey Show (Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert and Louis C.K. were all onboard) debuts Saturday, October 21. On Saturday, November 11, Obey Giant premieres, exploring the underground world of street art.
 
WE tv’s Growing Up Hip Hop Atlanta has generated more than 3 million video on demand transactions, and the network’s YouTube channel has generated more than 30 million plays over the first six months of the year, reports the net.

Scripps Networks Interactive nets reported a healthy August. HGTV wrapped the month as the #1 cable network during primetime among upscale W25-54, and was a top 10 network among A25-54 in prime and weekend among cable and broadcast. Food Network finished the month at No. 9 in cable among W25-54, boasting ratings increases of 5% among A25-54, 6% among A25-34, and 14% among M25-54. Travel Channel recorded its highest rated August since 2013, growing 10 percent during prime over last year. DIY Network tied last year’s record-breaking August among A25-54, while delivering its highest rated August ever with M25-54. Cooking Channel tied last year as its highest rated August among A18+, with Sunday night ratings in the demo up 45 percent over last year, and Great American Country enjoyed 17 percent growth versus last year, its highest rated August since 2007.

IN MEMORIAM
 
Actor/comedian Shelley Berman died September 1 of complications from Alzheimer’s. He was 92. The Emmy-nominated performer appeared on numerous TV shows, including The Twilight Zone, Bewitched, Friends, Grey’s Anatomy and Boston Legal, and played Larry David’s father in Curb Your Enthusiasm from 2002-2009.
 
Actor/producer Richard Anderson died August 31. He was 91. Anderson was best known to TV audiences for his role on The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman. “His always stylish attire, his class, calmness and knowledge never faltered in his 91 years,” said Lee Majors. “He was still the sweet, charming man when I spoke to him a few weeks ago.”
 
Steely Dan co-founder Walter Becker died September 3. He was 67. The “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number” band’s music was heard on numerous TV shows, including The Simpsons, Knight Rider, True Blood and Royal Pains.
