Good morning. It’s Friday, August 29, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Netflix
has broken a few barriers when it comes to original content and is doing so again. The company is expanding into France next month as part of its efforts to expand its business in continental Europe and so is creating an original series, Marseille, in French. It is described, CNET reports, as "an eight-episode tale of power, corruption and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the French port city." It will shoot early next year and come out later in 2015.

The Oprah Winfrey Network has been experimenting in YouTube Space LA for six months, and now the public can see some of the fruits of its labors with the new web series Who Am I? Each episode will feature celebs such as Randy Jackson, Brandy, and La Toya Jackson, discussing what makes them “them” in just two or three minutes. The series is part of OWN’s new effort to produce more digital offerings.

Jill Soloway’s “Transparent” will debut in the US and UK on Sept. 26 on Amazon Prime Instant Video. Amazon is planning to debut all 10 episodes of the show created by Soloway, who also worked on “Six Feet Under” and “Afternoon Delight.”

Collective Digital Studios and Luis Cruikshank, creator of YouTube’s Fred Figglehorn, are re-launching the Fred YT channel, according to VideoInk. Centering on tween and family entertainment, new shows will start on the channel through September.

The first five episodes of Starz original film making experiment The Chair will be available exclusively to the network’s subscribers on STARZ Play and STARZ On Demand beginning Saturday, September 6. The first episode of the network’s first unscripted series will also debut on Starz on Saturday, September 6 at 11p. “Starz is making the first five episodes of The Chair available on the same day of the television premiere of the series to reach a young adult population that is in the vanguard of ‘bingeing’ on shows as their preferred method of viewing,” said Chris Albrecht, CEO of Starz.

Mountain Dew and BBDO have launched a new web series that’s perfect for anyone with a very short attention span. Each episode is only 15 seconds long, Fast Company reports. There are eight in the first season of the series, which follows a finger-size daredevil who has adventures featuring everyday household objects.

Now that the Ice Bucket Challenge has raised over $88 million for ALS, marketers and planners are wondering: How can I replicate this viral video success? Saatchi & Saatchi Wellness Planning Director Erica Martinez has tips and pointers in the latest Cynsiders column.

Chloe Grace Moretz, Josh Gad, James Marsden, Megan Hilty and Robin Roberts are among the notables taking part in STOMP Out Bullying‘s annual celebrity video series in support of Blue Shirt Day World Day of Bullying Prevention at stompoutbullying.org. This year’s global effort takes place on Monday, October 6, when kids, teens and parents are asked to wear a blue shirt in solidarity.

CONTENT MEDIA

With only days to spare before the official season gets underway, Dish Network settled its dispute with Fox Sports 1 over a few college football games that nearly didn’t get broadcast over its network. Break out the hot dogs, sports fans.

ADVERTISING

Twitter wants to educate ad agencies on what it has to offer, so it has started a program called Flight School. Tested with Starcom MediaVest Group, MEC, and Omnicom Group along with a dozen smaller agencies, according to Ad Age, Flight School is a free online program to help agencies get better acquainted with Twitter’s new products and ad-placement potential.

Google is shifting an ad service that was originally built for smartphones to desktops. According to Bloomberg, the service allows for ads to “show what products are available nearby when users search for items, combining the key digital trends of local, mobile and commerce.” This is the first major tool to make the move from mobile to desktop, rather than the other way around.

RESEARCH

Medialets, a mobile ad serving and tracking firm, has released a new report revealing that mobile ads do result in conversions, Forbes reports. While most mobile ads aren’t clicked on, they are clicked more often than those on desktop web ads. “Ads on apps get much higher click-throughs than ads on the mobile Web,” Forbes reports. “Travel and entertainment ads do especially well, getting about a 60% higher click-through rate than ads for retail, automotive, and other categories.” In addition, “Most people won’t watch a video ad to the end. More than 80% will watch at least the first three-quarters of a video ad, but only a third will finish it.”

Microsoft is getting tougher on rogue apps in its Microsoft Store and Windows Phone Store. As a result, the company has discovered 1,500 bogus apps and kicked them out of its system, according to ZDnet.com. This comes after a report surfaced last week claiming that the store was hosting a fair number of fake apps.

TECHNOLOGY

Roku is getting into TV – literally. The streaming company’s technology is now being integrated into two different manufacturers’ sets, according to Paste. Hissense and TCL will produce sets ranging from 32 inches to 55 inches that include Roku. They will be available in several weeks.

Samsung
TV owners will be able to access Amazon Prime Instant Video in 4K, according to The Next Web. In addition, Samsung announced that 4K content can be accessed from Netflix as well.

EXEC MOVES

AdRev has named Brian Felsen its new president. He was previously the chief exec of CD Baby.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY

Party Down
earned a bit of a cult following when it aired for two seasons on Starz, but there weren’t enough eyeballs involved for the channel to keep it around. Centered on a group of wannabe actors and writers in Hollywood, its reruns lived briefly on Netflix before disappearing. Now Party Down, starring Jane Lynch and Adam Scott among others, has found a new home. Hulu has made a deal to carry the show’s two full seasons, starting today. Here’s a refresher, at www.cynopsis.com/#video.

See you TUESDAY!
