PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Shonda Rhimes may have departed ABC for Netflix, but Carlton Cuse (Lost, Bates Motel, The Strain) is back in the fold. At the close of a first-look deal with A+E Studios, Cuse inked a big, 4-year overall deal with ABC Studios. “I love genre storytelling with a high-quality bar, a compelling twist or narrative element,” said Cuse. “If you look at the shows I’ve done, that’s very much my sweet spot. I think Lost was an example of an elevated genre show that worked well, and I want to continue to work in that arena.”

OWN announced a new series from Moonlight’s Tarell Alvin McRaney. The coming-of-age drama, McRaney’s first television series, and inspired by events in his own life, will focus on a 14-year-old prodigy haunted by the death of his best friend. “When Tarell shared his powerful story with us there wasn’t a dry eye in the room,” said Oprah Winfrey. The yet-to-be-titled series will be produced for OWN by Page Fright and Outlier Productions in association with Warner Horizon Scripted Television

ABC grabbed comedic hourlong drama Kristy Kottis from Regina Corrado (The Strain), Felicity Huffman (American Crime), Rachel Winter (Dallas Buyers Club) and Working Title, inspired by the real-life schoolteacher-turned FBI agent. Studio is NBCUniversal International Studios.

MTV International greenlit production of music game show Crash Karaoke. In each episode, volunteers will be enlisted to participate in a head-to-head karaoke showdown. Production of the series begins this month, with international roll-out beginning later this year.

USA Network and Universal Cable Productions announced that the season 7 finale of Suits (airing 1Q18) will serve as a potential spinoff, centered on lawyer Jessica Pearson (Gina Torres). The pilot will be executive produced and written by Suits creator and executive producer Aaron Korsh and executive producer Daniel Arkin, and directed by Anton Cropper (House of Lies). Doug Liman, David Bartis and Gene Klein of Hypnotic (Suits) will also serve as executive producers.

USA and Universal Cable are also teaming to develop a TV adaptation of Night Vale Presents podcast Alice Isn’t Dead, following a truck driver as she searches for her missing wife. Alice creator Joseph Fink will exec produce.

Karl Gajdusek (Stranger Things) will executive produce and serve as showrunner for season 2 of Amazon dramedy Z: The Beginning of Everything.

Game day we’re going live from Madras, Oregon, one of the first places to view the eclipse in the nation.
