08/16/16: ESPN makes ’20 with UEFA; The Ivy League’s record play; Bridgestone hits the road with Olympic Channel


Good morning. It’s Tuesday August 16, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

ESPN locked in an agreement with UEFA that will give the company rights to UEFA Euro 2020 and all UEFA national team matches between 2018 and 2022. The deal also included rights to a package of UEFA national team competitions, including qualifying matches to UEFA EURO 2020 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup (the European Qualifiers) as well as two editions of the newly-created UEFA Nations League.
“The UEFA European Football Championship is one of the marquee events in international football and as fans in the U.S. continue to follow the sport overseas, the interest in this tournament will only get stronger,” said Scott Guglielmino, ESPN senior vice president, programming and acquisitions. “We are pleased to continue our relationship with UEFA and our commitment to presenting world-class global football events on our networks and across our media platforms.”


34.9 million people tuned in to NBC to watch Usain Bolt’s victory in the 100 meters on Sunday, according to Nielsen, with NBC Olympics reporting that overall primetime coverage averaged 28.1 million viewers with a 15.8 household rating. Highlights from around the NBC family tree included NBCSN’s live Olympic competition coverage averaging 1.02 million viewers, while Bravo’s live coverage of Andy Murray’s victory in the men’s tennis gold-medal match averaged 929,000 viewers. Meanwhile, NBC and Golf Channel’s coverage of the closing holes of the men’s Olympic golf tournament ranked as the highest-rated 90-minute window of final round golf coverage in 2016 with a combined 5.6 household rating and 8.8 million average viewers. Afternoon coverage on Golf Channel delivered a 1.02 household rating with 1.6 million viewers, marking the best performance in the time period for total viewers and Adults 25-54 (495,000) since the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February of 2012.

ONE World Sports will get a ride with the Ivy League this college football season, announcing a partnership to showcase 10 games during the 2016-17 season. Coverage begins on Sept. 17 with Colgate/Yale. The conference also announced additional telecasts across NBCSN, CNBC, American Sports Network and FOX College Sports. The 21-game package across the five different networks mark all-time highs, with programming set to include four games on Friday nights on NBCSN starting with Penn/Dartmouth on Sept. 30 at 7p. 

Speaking of college football, CBS Sports is tapping Garth Brooks for its SEC on CBS telecasts this season. Programming will feature his new song Pure Adrenaline, which was created for the conference’s sport and will feature customized lyrics each week along with elements from an original video shoot featuring Brooks. The song will debut on Sept. 3 at 3:30 with UCLA/Texas A&M.

FOX Sports announced Joy Taylor will serve as moderator for Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe on FS1’s upcoming in-development opinion and debate show. The program debuts on Sept. 6 at 10a.

ABC, ESPN, and ESPN2 offer all 32 games of the 70th Little League World Series presented by Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes from Aug. 18-28. ABC carries five games including the International Championship and the United States Championship on Aug. 27 as well as the Little League World Series Championship on Aug. 28. ESPN and ESPN2 then combine to televise 27 games with four games on ESPN on Aug. 18. MLB play-by-play commentators Karl Ravech and Dave Flemming and SportsCenter anchor Jay Crawford will rotate games with analysts John Kruk or Kyle Peterson and reporters Marysol Castro or Jaymee Sire.
SiriusXM and DGital Media locked in a broadcast agreement to bring The Vertical Podcast Network to SiriusXM subscribers nationwide. The audio series, led by The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski from Yahoo Sports, runs every weekday at 3p on Sirius channel 214 and XM channel 203 and on the SiriusXM app.

ESPN college football analyst Rod Gilmore announced that he has been diagnosed with a a form of blood cancer known as Multiple Myeloma, noting that “First, I feel great and my prognosis is good. I have great support with an amazing medical team, an incredible wife and family, and amazing friends and colleagues.”

Bridgestone Corporation stepped up to become the first Founding Partner of the Olympic Channel. The new digital platform launches worldwide on Aug. 21 with the four-year partnership running through to 2020. The deal will initially see Bridgestone serve as the presenting partner of the documentary series Against All Odds. “We are delighted that our Worldwide TOP Partner, Bridgestone, has become an Olympic Channel Founding Partner,” said IOC President Thomas Bach. “Bridgestone has demonstrated its support for the Olympic Movement and belief in the Olympic values through its long-term commitment as a Worldwide TOP Partner, and through this new agreement we look forward to working closely with them to bring the Olympic Channel to fans around the world.”
The Pac-12 Conference named Cooper Tire as the Official Tire of the 2016 Football Championship Game, which will be played on Dec. 2. The partnership aligns Cooper with Pac-12 football all season long with advertising and highlight features in all Pac-12 football games on Pac-12 Networks. In addition, during the Pac-12 Football Championship Game, Cooper will have an on-field presence with stadium signage, video board features and inclusion in the roster card.


120 Sports is taking The Morning Run to NY starting in Sept. The series will be carried from the MLBAM studios in Chelsea Market from 8-11a. According to the release, the move also will allow 120 Sports, powered by BAMTech’s video distribution technology, “to further leverage the NYC-based assets of its business partners such as Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, and Sports Illustrated, and have access to popular personalities in sports, media and entertainment on a daily basis, live and in person.”

WWE Network unveiled its SummerSlam Week programming slate, which is set to offer fans new episodes of WWE 24, WWE NXT, Cruiserweight Classic, WWE Ride Along and Legends with JBL, as well as the premiere of Holy Foley. Tonight will see WWE 24: Women’s Evolution at 10:30p.

MOKO inked a strategic agreement and transaction with Competitor Group in a move that will see CGI acquire RunHaven, MOKO’s running website and social media assets. The two companies also entered a marketing alliance in which they will facilitate introductions to each other’s partners to explore potential sponsorship and media opportunities.

SendtoNews Video announced a new syndication partnership with newspaper publisher McClatchy that will see the rollout of SendtoNews’ sports video content across McClatchy’s digital publishing operations.


Intersport hired Kurt Melcher from Robert Morris University to oversee the company’s eSports development. Melcher  in addition to serving as Athletic Director for the school – launched the first collegiate-level eSports department in the US at Robert Morris. According to Intersport, his role as an evangelist for the industry will “be instrumental in architecting Intersport’s eSports approach.”

ESL launched its PlayOverwatch channels on Twitch, running 24/7 at esl.gg/overwatch247.


The Grand Prix Association of Long Beach named Martin Bannon has been named Director of Marketing & Sponsorship for the annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. In addition, Richard Martinez has joined the company as Manager of Corporate Sales, assuming Bannon’s previous position, and will oversee its hospitality and group sales functions.
