08/13/15: 40 years’ worth of video are watched daily on Periscope, founders say; Tubular Labs: Disney Descendants soar on YouTube; ‘Heroes’ prequel lands on Hulu

Twitter’s Periscope has surpassed 10 million users just four months after launch, according to a blog from co-founders Kayvon Beykpour and Joe Bernstein, who say they’re seeing over 40 years’ worth of video watched per day. That user base is impressive, Beykpour and Bernstein acknowledge, but add it’s not the metric for assessing their overall success. “Time Watched serves as a proxy for active user growth, without suffering some of the limitations of focusing exclusively on a metric like Daily Active Users (DAU) or Monthly Active Users (MAU),” they point out. “If we were motivated to grow DAU, we’d be incentivized to invest in a host of conventional growth hacks, viral mechanics, and marketing to drive up downloads…this direction doesn’t necessarily lead to a better product.” Adobe recently released data showing that Periscope has generated 3x more traffic than competitor Meerkat since late March.


As part of Turner Classic Movies’ first Summer Under The Stars Salute to the Ann-Margret, the network will host a live Twitter chat during Cincinnati Kid today (Thursday). Summer Under the Stars is an annual programming event that pays tribute to 31 different stars in 31 days.

Red Bull TV
’s offerings this week include Superheroes of Stoke available on Aug. 11; George Ezra LIVE from the Red Bull Sound Space available on Aug. 13; Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup – Czech Republic on Aug. 15 at 10:20a ET, and Crankworz 2015: Live from Whistler, Canada on Aug. 15 at 7:30p ET. Programming is available at Redbull.tv and through its app on multiple devices.
Japanese anime programming platform, Crunchyroll, will add the original Japanese-language Yu-Gi-Oh! GX show via a deal with 4K Media. The beginning of season one is available now on Crunchyroll, with additional episodes released on a monthly basis.

The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) announced that AdLarge, Midroll, NPR, Panoply, Podtrac and WNYC will present at the first-ever IAB Podcast Upfront Showcase. In New York City on Sept. 10, advertisers and media buyers will get a sneak peak at new content developments from each presenting company in 20-minute segments that spotlight one of the digital audio platforms.


Opera Mediaworks acquired marketing engagement platform Yvolver. The new offering will be integrated into the Opera Mediaworks and AdColony SDKs for in-app mobile advertising, featuring Instant-Play HD mobile video technology. Roll out is this fall for select partners.
SpotXchange and talk show host Laura Ingraham’s LifeZette have partnered to manage and serve ads on the digital destination. “LifeZette will much more easily be able to determine which video content drives the highest revenue, giving them insights that help make the smartest decisions with their video inventory,” said Ben Abbatiello, SpotXchange’s Senior Director of Business Development.


Genee secured $1.45 million in funding from Uj Ventures, Streamline Ventures, Garnett Ventures and additional angel investors. Genee is an artificial intelligence platform that interprets natural language through a core interface that plugs directly into communication tools for businesses.

Entertainment market research firm Screen Engine/ASI launched two new divisions at the company with new hires. David Gross joined as Senior Vice President, overseeing the International Division, and Mark Orne will lead the Digital Entertainment Division as Senior Vice President.

Vizeum U.S. appointed Patrick Affleck as the Executive Vice President of Digital and Innovation. Previously, Affleck was the Head of Innovation for Vizeum in London.
