NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
CBS wants to partner with the big players in the digital space to create original shows for Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Instant Video. CEO Les Moonves hinted at the move for CBS Television Studios in the network’s Q2 earnings call on Friday. “Shortly, you’re going to hear about us being in business with some of the SVODs with [an] original program,” Moonves said. In the past year, CBS has struck multiple show licensing deals with Netflix and Amazon.
 
Cinedigm acquired its first original series, Fight of the Living Dead, for upcoming digital channel Con TV. The series is a zombie themed reality competition, starring top YouTubers Justine Ezarik (iJustine), Meghan Camarena (Strawberry17) and others. Cinedigm announced the geek and pop culture channel in February, and is expected to go live by the end of the year with a free and subscription-based offering.
 
Collective Digital Studio
and Purina re-launched the Petcentric channel with three new original series. Texts from Dog is based on the Tumblr blog with the same name about the YouTuber Sam Pepper receiving texts from his pet “Sir Chinston Pugsworth II.” The other two series, include: Pet Magic with magician Jose Ahonen using his pets as assistants, and the weekly show Rescue Cam highlighting the dogs and cats at local shelters in need a home.
 
Netflix landed exclusive U.S. rights to stream the BBC’s Happy Valley. The six-part series will hit the service on Aug. 20, and examines a policewoman’s life after she’s accused of murder.
 
On-demand kids TV network Kabillion partnered with distribution platform VHX to allow parents to download and own episodes from the net. Through the deal, Kabillion titles like Chloe’s Closet, Hero: 108, The DaVincibles and Dive Olly Dive are now available on multiple devices. “We’re excited to help Kabillion take control of premium video sales through their own website,” VHX Business Development Ben Kim said. “It’s a great opportunity for them to build a direct connection with their audience.”
 
History introduced a new kids branch for ages 7-11, called Planet H, with animated historically-themed programming. Planet H will first roll out mobile games Empire Run and Frontier Heroes for iOS, Android and Kindle Fire devices. A third game will premiere in 2015.

CONTENT MEDIA

 
Starz’s Outlander has reeled in about one million views since it premiered for free on VOD and on the web on Aug. 2, before its August 9 TV debut. The ep was watched 900,000 times by more than 600,000 unique visitors on Starz On Demand, Starz Play, Starz.com, YouTube and Xfinity (not including data from On Demand from its cable affiliates). Outlander is based on the bestselling novel, written by Diana Gabaldon.
 
Cinemax posted the pilot of The Knick starring Clive Owen on YouTube for free on Friday. The show is directed by Steven Soderbergh (Traffic), and follows a doctor at New York’s Knickerbocker Hospital in the 1900s. A new ep hits Cinemax every Friday.
 
International TV and movie streaming service Drama Fever released the hit series from Japan and China, Mysterious Summer. The 15-episode show centers on 15 people who seem unconnected to each other, but are in fact, very much linked.

20th Century Fox is working with social marketing company Wayin to integrate social content in real time into more than 200 unique TV spots for the movie Let’s Be Cops. The campaign, running from Aug. 6-15, will incorporate tweets with hashtags #letsbecops or @LetsBeCops into commercials across nine networks. The comedy stars Damon Wayans Jr. and Jake Johnson (both from New Girl), and arrives in theatres on Aug. 13.

YuMe integrated the Nielsen Online Campaign Ratings (OCR) for mobile to Toyota and GSK campaigns to better target the client’s audiences. “We recognize the importance of standardized measurement to legitimize the mobile as an effective means in reaching our audience,” Director, Tradition & Digital Media Toyota Motor Sales, U.S. Dionne Colvin-Lovely said. “Continual innovation is the key to delivering effective advertising, which is why we are working with YuMe and Nielsen to take cross-screen advertising to the next level.”
