Discovery’s Shark Week dives into its 27th year with a first-time Facebook partnership. On Aug. 10, fans will see Trending Topics, Hashtag Polling and live Instagram posts incorporated in the premiere; the following nights, viewers might see their FB posts live on air. SharkWeek.com includes a Fin Fest live streamed beach party Aug. 9-10, Supersized Shark Cams, #KingOfSummer Shark Week social hub, Shark After Dark Live late-night show and Sharkified Snapchat, with updates on the week’s underwater events. Dunkin’ Donuts is in on the action, with fans encouraged to snap Take a Bite, Take a Pic selfies using #DDSharkWeek for a chance to win prizes including an appearance on the on the Shark After Dark Live show.
YouTube stepped up its effort to bring more brands to the table with the acquisition of mobile video creation app Directr yesterday, noting the purchase will “make it easier for advertisers to create and upload awesome videos.” The app is now free for download on iOS devices.
Kevin Spacey will headline the 2014 IAB MIXX conference during Advertising Week in New York City, Sept. 29-Oct. 3. Spacey is expected to present a speech about digital platforms, content creators and the transformation of the entertainment industry, according to the IAB. The House of Cards star spoke rousingly on similar topics at the James MacTaggart Memorial Lecture at the Edinburgh Television Festival last year; the filmed address was so popular it hit 1.4 million views on YouTube.
Beatles classic A Hard Day’s Night is now exclusively available on Hulu Plus, thanks to a renewed licensing agreement with Criterion Collection. The streaming service also locked down 800 more films from the studio. Hulu recently signed a three-year deal for adult animated series, South Park.
MTV released the first episode of House of Style featuring “fancy” new host Iggy Azalea. The hip-hop artist speaks with Moschino designer and creative director Jeremy Scott in the ep, which is available at mtv.com. During the multi-screen series, the Australian recording artist will take viewers through vintage stores and music video sets in Los Angeles while interviewing artists, athletes and others. The finale ep will lead into to the Aug. 24 2014 MTV Video Music Awards.
With the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie hitting theatres today, Fandango released original artwork and videos inspired by the reptile crime stoppers. A video showing a time-lapse of the turtles recreated with an Etch-A-Sketch, as well as an infographic and fan-created TMNT art, is available online.

NFL debuted the NFL Now digital network, with football highlights, original and historic content and live press conferences and shows. For $1.99 a month, super fans can upgrade to NFL Now Plus and get instant in-game highlights and a customized stream. NFL Now is available through apps on connected devices, mobile devices and distributed on Yahoo Screen and Yahoo Sports.

The results of a survey conducted by celebrity brand strategist Jeetendr Sehdev on the popularity of YouTube stars versus Hollywood stars among teenagers showed that 5 and 6 of the top 10 were YouTubers. Internet celebs scored significantly higher than Hollywood celebrities on characteristics considered to have the highest correlation to influencing purchases among teens. “Digital broadcasting has moved from being an afterthought into the forefront,” said Internet Marketing Expert and WebiMax CEO Ken Wisnefski. “Today adults are spending a full hour more per day on their mobile devices than they do watching television, and as this survey indicates, that gap is sure to widen in the future.”
Marketing tech company Unruly announced a partnership with Nielsen and its Online Campaign Ratings for social videos. The audience guarantee measurement will be available on Unruly’s in-stream skippable pre-roll format. “With three-quarters of video views happening outside of YouTube, it’s more important than ever to reach audiences where they are watching and sharing videos,” said Unruly U.S. President Richard Kosinski. “Advertisers can be assured their social video ads were not just viewed, but were also seen by their desired audience within Nielsen’s dataset.”
Marketers will soon have the option of paying for Twitter ads only when users interact with them in specified ways. The Wall Street Journal reports the “objective-based campaigns” will charge marketers when actions like an app install or website clicks occur.
Netflix subscribers are aware of original series Orange Is the New Black and House of Cards, but according to a new study, less than half actually watch the shows. Centris Marketing Science surveyed households from July 17-20 and found 44 percent of Netflix subs watched OITNB and 31 percent watched HoC – compared to the 94 percent that had heard of OITNB and 89 percent that knew of HoC. Variety points out that season two of HBO’s Game of Thrones was watched by 41 percent of its subscribers, while season four grew to 66 percent penetration. Netflix CEO and founder Reed Hastings, noting that his service’s $1.15 billion Q2 sub revenue surpassed HBO’s $1.14 billion, said this week in a Facebook post, “HBO rocks, and we are honored to be in the same league.”
