08/07/14: YouTube’s Grace Helbig jumping to E!, AOL’s programmatic advertising pays off, Netflix COO hints yes to Arrested Development

Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 7, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Social media darling Grace Helbig is officially crossing over to TV, to host a pilot for E!, Deadline reports. The Grace Helbig Project (wt) will be produced by Embassy Row, the studio behind Talking Dead and Watch What Happens: Live. But don’t despair, YouTubers: the web star is still producing videos for her it’sGrace channel (1.8 million subscribers and counting). “I love the Internet and I love television,” Helbig tells Cynopsis. “I’d really love for them to consummate their relationship while you watch!”
HBO Go could soon offer its users videos from Time Warner’s Turner networks, Warner Bros. and other nets, Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes told analysts yesterday. “Should offerings be determined for consumers based on what a company owns?” asked Bewkes. “That’s not how consumers arrange their dial…we’re anticipating people want more than that.”
AOL’s push into programmatic advertising is paying off, according to its second quarter earnings call – revenue hit $606.8 million, exceeding the $595.51 million analysts predicted. Advertising revenue had a six percent bump from the prior quarter, to $98.9 million. More good news: third party platforms’ revenue (like Adap.tv) increased 60 percent year-over-year overall.
launched a 24/7 online destination for new series The Singles Project, premiering Aug. 12. The web platform features highlights from each episode, a profile page of “The Singles” dating bios, and a “Connect” page for fans to participate in live chats and weigh in on dates in real time during the show. Bravo is also rolling out “The Morning After” social Q&As on Twitter and the “15 second flirt,” where fans can try to catch the eye of the contestants on the show with short videos. “Bravo has an extremely engaged and socially savvy audience that wants their voice to be heard, which made this show a great fit for the network,” said Executive Vice President of Bravo & Oxygen Lisa Hsia. “We are breaking the fourth wall on this one – fans can impact cast members and what’s happening on air in a way that hasn’t been done before.”
Save the date! On Thursday, November 13th Cynopsis will present the Digital Model D Awards at the Grand Hyatt in New York City. Early deadline to enter is TOMORROW August 8, and late deadline is August 15. Register here

Arrested Development fans, rejoice: Netflix COO Ted Sarandos said he is “positive” the streaming service will bring back the series for a fifth season. There was speculation Netflix would make the move when AD creator Brian Glazer signed a major development deal with the company, but this is the first time a Netflix rep confirmed the rumor.
British streaming site Acorn TV added programming: new eps of detective show Vera and mystery series Lovejoy, 2008 music drama Britannia High, two new documentaries, David Duchet: In The Footsteps of St. Paul and The Story of Medicine: Pain, Pus & Poison, comedy Cold Feet and the second season of Republic of Doyle. Acorn TV content can be viewed at www.Acorn.TV and on its Roku channel.
The latest ep from George Takei’s AARP YouTube series, Takei’s Take, was released yesterday. Takei commemorates the 69th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima, speaking about his personal connection to the event the impact it had on him and his family.
Cynopsis held its first West Coast Video Forum in San Francisco yesterday. The summit, held at StumbleUpon HQ, dove into the future of digital video, content development and measurement. And with experts representing ComScore, Tubular Labs, Discovery Digital Networks and more, it was a major networking hub. “Content owners feel they can deliver a premium experience on the tablet and mobile…as good as on a TV,” Ooyala Sr. Director of Product Management Sudhir Kaushik said on “The Million Dollar Question: How to Advertise and Monetize” panel. When it came to content and measurement, Watchwith VP of Business Development Geoff Katz pointed out, “Audience engagement is quickly becoming one of the most valuable metrics for TV networks.” The day ended with a keynote from PBS Digital Studios show host of Everything But the News, Steve Goldbloom.

ABC News revealed that in the 30 days since it launched on the Apple TV, users have watched its programming 50 percent more on the device than on mobile and desktop combined. Live content accounted for 20 percent of the channel’s views, and those using the Apple TV spent 65 percent more viewing time on the network than on desktop computers. Peak usage time: 9p ET, in the middle of traditional primetime hours.
