08/07/14: FOX Sports lines up NFL broadcast teams; Levi’s Stadium gets a cold welcome from the NHL; EA Sports ties it up with the Premier League

Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 7, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

FOX Sports rolled out its broadcast pairings for the company’s 20th anniversary of its first NFL on FOX game telecast. Regular-season games kick off on Sunday, Sept. 7, with doubleheader coverage featuring six match-ups beginning at 1p. Joe Buck and Troy Aikman return for their 13th season, along with Erin Andrews to call its first regular-season game of the year from Dallas on Week 1 with the 49ers/Cowboys at 4:25p. Other announce teams include Kevin Burkhardt/John Lynch/Pam Oliver; Kenny Albert/Daryl Johnston/Tony Siragusa; Chris Myers/Ronde Barber/Jennifer Hale; and Thom Brennaman/David Diehl/Laura Okmin. Dick Stockton will join a rotating slate of analysts that include Donovan McNabb, Brady Quinn and Kirk Morrison. Also contributing to NFL on FOX broadcasts throughout the season are play-by-play announcers Sam Rosen, Justin Kutcher, Gus Johnson, and Mike Goldberg and analysts Charles Davis and Brendon Ayanbadejo.


The brand new Levi’s Stadium will play home to one of this year’s games for the 2015 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series. The contest will see the Sharks host the Kings on Feb. 21 at 7p and carried by NBCSN stateside and on Hockey Night In Canada and TVA Sports 2 in Canada. The Coors Light NHL Stadium Series featured four games in 2014, all of which were played in sold out stadiums. “The growing excitement around NHL hockey in California, the intensity of last season’s playoff series between these teams and the state-of-the-art setting at Levi’s Stadium will bring a thrilling new dimension to the Kings-Sharks rivalry,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. League partner MillerCoors returns as the title sponsor of the NHL Stadium Series™ for its flagship Coors Light brand. As the title partner for the event, Coors Light will be provided with a number of assets in addition to incorporating its logo into the official game and event mark.

Turner Sports tees off on coverage of the 96th PGA Championship today with marquee coverage spotlighting Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer and Bubba Watson on TNT. If four-time PGA Championship winner Tiger Woods goes on to play, marquee group coverage will tee off Thursday, Aug. 7, at 8:35a with his pairing, which included Phil Mickelson and Padraig Harrington. Woods, Mickelson and Harrington would also be featured Friday, Aug. 8, at 1:45p. If Woods has a setback and is out, marquee group coverage will feature Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth and Lee Westwood on Thursday, Aug. 7, at 8:15a and Friday, Aug. 8, at 1:25p. Meanwhile, the marquee group including McIlroy, Kaymer and Watson will be featured Thursday at 1:45p and Friday at 8:35a. Marquee groups for Saturday, Aug. 9, and Sunday, Aug. 10, will be determined following Friday’s action.

ESPN and Charter Communications locked in a distribution deal for the SEC Network when the channel launches on August 14. The network will be available to fans and followers of the Southeastern Conference in all Charter markets. “We are excited to be bringing the SEC Network to Charter customers,” said Allan Singer, SVP of Programming for Charter Communications.  “We know that there are many SEC fans and grads in our footprint who are ready to cheer on their team and we are glad that the SEC Network will be available to them when it launches on August 14th.”
CBS Sports announced that lead college football announce team of Verne Lundquist, Gary Danielson and reporter Allie LaForce will call the Ohio State/Navy game on CBS Sports Network on Aug. 20 at noon. The game will be played from M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md.
FOX Sports 1 will carry a special produced by Major League Baseball Productions on Aug. 9 at 11:30a that will feature experts and scientists taking an in-depth look at “what kind of special breed of athlete it takes to successfully perform in the stress-filled role of the much, heralded, late-inning ‘closer.’” The special, dubbed Closer Kingdom, goes on to examine the hierarchy, the routines and the mindset of baseball relievers with specific attention to the raw nature of the MLB closer.
Tuesday night’s extra innings Tigers/Yankees battle featuring David Price’s Detroit debut scored as MLB Network’s most-watched regular season game since 10/2/2012 with an average of 575K viewers. The game ranks as the third-most watched regular season game in MLB Network’s history.

On the local front, the Yankees contest ranked as YES’ 2nd-most watched Yankees telecast this season, averaging 360,000 TV Households in the New York DMA (4.83 average TV Household rating), according to Nielsen. The telecast peaked from 10:30-10:45 with 492,000 TV Households.

NBC, NBCSN, and Universal Sports Network are offering swim fans coverage of the Aug. 6-10 USA Swimming Phillips 66 National Championships through Sunday. NBC will broadcast action on Saturday, Aug. 9 and Sunday, Aug. 10, at 4p. Todd Harris, Rowdy Gaines and Carolyn Manno will call the action from Irvine.

The Championship Round of the Jack Link’s Major League Fishing General Tire Summit Cup will be carried on Saturday on CBS at 1p. The hour-long, special CBS Sports airing will show Major League Fishing action from the Alpena, Michigan region. The Summit Cup was shown earlier this year on Outdoor Channel but executives are looking to “tap into a significant audience that didn’t have the opportunity to view the Championship Round during its previous run of broadcasts.”

Pac-12 Networks announced plans to bring back flagship series Pac-12 Sports Report for a second season along with Pac-12 Football Weekly later this month. Pac-12 Sports Report debuts for season two on Monday, August 25 at 7p, with the premiere of Pac-12 Football Weekly the following day at 7p. New this season, Pac-12 Sports Report will include a graphic rundown on the side of the screen to better keep viewers informed on what’s coming up next. Pac-12 Football Weekly returns on a new day this season, airing Tuesdays at 7p.

AT&T is mulling an offer to buy Comcast SportsNet Houston, according to Bloomberg News. The network, which runs Astros and Rockets games, has been in bankruptcy proceedings since last year.

EA SPORTS and the Premier League extended their existing agreement through the end of the 2018/19 season, which now incorporates the sponsorship of the League’s Goal Decision System. The new agreement will “showcase the Barclays Premier League as the most authentic league in EA SPORTS FIFA 15, with an unprecedented level of detail in the players and all 20 stadiums, as well as the integration of broadcast quality graphics, audio and commentary.” The agreement has also given EA SPORTS access to all 20 Barclays Premier League clubs to enable the FIFA 15 team to capture 3D head scans of over 200 players, build realistic stadiums for all 20 League clubs, and record live match atmosphere during the 2013/14 season.

TAG Heuer inked a deal with INDYCAR and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway that will see the brand become the official watch of the Verizon IndyCar Series and IMS. TAG Heuer will also sponsor the Carb Day Pit Stop Challenge at IMS.

SEC Network announced plans to debut customized graphic packages for all 14 schools and a cohesive network design upon its Aug. 14 launch designed to reflect “the solidarity of the conference and all 21 SEC sponsored sports.” Each school worked closely with the network to develop school IDs, including a 15 second “Quad” ID. All 14 Quad IDs open with an iconic campus image will then circulate into legendary and current athletic imagery of coaches, players, fans and school tradition.


Fast-growing digital platform The Whistle Sports Network announced that it has broken one billion views. At the time, it had offered sports fans 135 channels with 16,508 videos with over 6.6 million subscribers. The company recently opened the doors to its new Dallas office, in addition to its New York City and Los Angeles locations.


ESPN named Julie Souza as the company’s Vice President, Business Development and Strategy where she will be charged with developing and executing ESPN’s business development strategy, with a focus on smartly growing ESPN’s business and product offerings across all platforms including television, digital, wireless, print and others. Souza joins ESPN from the Sports Illustrated Group.
