Mobile esports are poised for a breakout, according to Niko Partners, which announced research projecting that mobile esports will become the fastest growth sector in the esports industry and that a mobile esports boom is poised to propel mobile esports from a niche industry to the mass market. The reports, titled The Evolution of Mobile Esports, explores the evolution of mobile esports, compared to PC esports, globally, with a focus on Asian markets.

According to their data, mobile esports will precipitate a shift from a limited number of high-profile, spectator-focused esports productions toward a much larger number of open tournaments carried out regionally and locally. In 2018, mobile esports games generated $15.3 billion (25% of total mobile game revenue) with $5.6 billion from China alone, and another $450 million from Greater Southeast Asia.

“Mobile esports tournaments will engage consumers not only as spectators but as participants. This will create mass market participation and engagement, growing a far larger audience for esports and generating new opportunities for revenue,” said Lisa Hanson founder and managing partner of Niko Partners. “We will see esports transition from fewer large tournaments to the addition of large numbers of smaller tournaments that are open to everyone who wants to compete.”

COMPETITION AND VENUES


 
Interactive entertainment media publisher and developer BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America unveiled a new esports tournament built around the melee weapons-based fighting game, the SOULCALIBUR World Invitational. The event will take place on Nov. 2 at the HyperX Esports Arena at The Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas, as seven of the top SOULCALIBUR VI players from around the globe are invited to compete while one more player has the chance to best a pool of 128 players to join the chosen seven by participating in the SOULCALIBUR World Invitational Last Chance Qualifier event.
 
ELEAGUE is launching a new competitive series next month in partnership with Wizards of the Coast with the addition of new a Showdown series via MTG Arena starting Sept. 4. Each week, players will compete in one single-elimination match at a time via MTGA in the Standard format, according to Dot Esports.
 
The International 2019 saw new viewership records after dangling a grand prize of $34.3 million. Esports Charts reports that 1.96 million people tuned in for the grand final, easily topping the previous record of 1.21 million. Offering a record $34 million in prizing, Valve officials announced that The International 2020 would take place in Stockholm, to mark the first European TI since the first International that was held in Cologne. This year’s event saw Team OG walk away the winners with over $15 million in winnings and marking the first time that The International has been won back to back.
 
ESL announced plans to bring the 77th edition of IEM to Beijing-Haidian to celebrate the company’s 10th-year anniversary in China on November 7-10, 2019. The event will host eight teams at Beijing University Students’ Gymnasium of Capital University of Physical Education and Sports to compete for the total prize pool of US$250,000 and a victory towards the Intel Grand Slam. The competition marks the first time that IEM is hosted in a standalone location in China.
 
The GIRLGAMER Esports Festival, organized by Evoloop and presented by Grow uP eSports, cemented a strategic partnership with Meydan One – a lifestyle and retail destination currently under development in Dubai, United Arab Emirates – and Galaxy Racer Esports to host the GIRLGAMER Esports Festival World Finals at the venue. The World Finals will be held from Dec. 12-14. “We are very enthusiastic about bringing our event to Dubai and incredibly happy to have found such amazing partners to join us in the mission towards inclusivity. Diversity is at the heart of everything we do, and the GIRLGAMER World Finals will help bring global attention to the incredible gender equality work being done in the region. We also hope to inspire the young generation to grow up more inclusively and parents to develop better relationships with their children,” said Fernando Pereira, organizer of the GIRLGAMER Esports Festival.
 
Unikrn is bringing season two of United Masters League, announcing nine weeks of professional CS:GO followed by a grand final bracket. In addition, they will partner with GRID esports to bring their statistical and data driven solutions on stream to heighten viewer experience and engagement. “Unikrn is a proud investor in developing rising esports talent,” said Unikrn CEO Rahul Sood. “UML Season 1 created opportunity and experience which propelled several participating teams up the CS:GO rankings — creating opportunities for players at every level is core to Unikrn’s esports-first mentality.”

For the past nine years, The Dota 2 International has drawn thousands of viewers and  millions in prizing for a highly dedicated group of esports fans. As the years have gone on, the prize pool has significantly increased, from $1.6M to over $34M this past year. Has the event’s viewership matched pace?
  • YoY increase across all key live streaming metrics: The 2019 International generated 1.7 times as many Live Hours Watched and an Average Minute Audience that was 345.7k greater than the 2018 International.
  • Prize Pool vs Hours Watched: The 2019 International is converting prizing more efficiently, with 2.1 hours watched for every prize dollar invested.
  • Platform Market Share: Twitch continues to lead with 59% of the tournaments Live Hours Watched, however a significant audience came from Steam.tv, representing over 20.2M hours watched.

Tyler Blevins, aka Ninja, unveiled his newest collaboration, this time with adidas, with the deal making him the first pro gamer ever to be signed by the brand. “No shortcuts. Only long days. Never let anyone tell you that you can’t catch your dreams. Choose your path. Put the TIME IN. I’m humbled, and excited, to officially announce my partnership with @adidasoriginals,” Ninja posted in the announcement. The multi-year deal is expected to lead to products “in either the physical or virtual world.”
 
With its postseason contenders locked in as season two comes to a conclusion, the Overwatch League named Comcast’s Xfinity as the presenting sponsor of the 2019 playoffs and Grand Finals. The sponsorship will give Xfinity “significant presence” during the playoffs’ digital broadcasts on Twitch and ESPN, the Grand Finals airing live on ABC, and also onsite at the Wells Fargo Center. The 2019 playoffs begin on Friday in Los Angeles and culminate at the Grand Finals on Sept. 29, at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. All matches are livestreamed on Twitch and the ESPN app, and the Grand Finals will be live broadcast on ABC. The two teams that qualify will compete for the league’s championship trophy and a share of the US $1.7 million prize pool, with the winning team getting $1.1 million and the runner-up taking home $600,000.
 
Twitch launched a new partnership with Anheuser-Busch InBev‘s Bud Light brand to sponsor the BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America Inc. Tekken World Tour as well as the creation of the Beer League Tuesday Night Throwdown competition. The winner of the competition gets a trip to Bangkok for a chance to get into the Tekken World Tour finals.

Ready, the maker of The Ready Games, an esports tournament platform, announced $5 million in funding that will be leverage to accelerate growth in the hyper-casual gaming market. The round, led by BITKRAFT Esports Ventures, includes participation from new investors Comcast Ventures and Eldridge Industries. “The gaming industry often overlooks one of the most significant audiences – women. In the U.S., 65% of women play mobile games, and they represent almost half of the mobile gaming population,” said Scott Rupp, a partner with BITKRAFT Esports Ventures. “The Ready Games powered by Ready Maker game development technology has become one of the most prolific mobile developers in the App Store, catering to the rapidly growing audience of female gamers. We believe this team can continue their momentum with this funding and grow a global community of people playing competitive hyper-casual games for cash.”

The Washington Post reported that some partners of the Echo Fox franchise lost their bid for a temporary restraining order against Rick Fox in a Los Angeles courtroom on Friday, with the court filing claiming that Fox had gone against the wishes of his partners in the actions he took with the esports organization. The Washington Post said eight partners sent a letter to Fox on Thursday night and accused him of “willful, wanton, and intentionally destructive efforts towards the Partnership,” and said Fox was responsible for the organization’s fall from a so-called valuation of $150 million 10 months ago to $31 million today. “These are all lies, and this is collusion on the part of [business partners] Amit and Stratton to create the narrative they need to remove me from the control of the company that we started,” Fox said in a phone interview with the Post on Thursday evening.
 
North American esports organization Pittsburgh Knights announced new investment funding from Esports MX LATAM Fund, a group of investors based in Mexico. The deal reportedly includes Esports MX LATAM launching an affiliated esports team in Mexico that will be modeled on Pittsburgh Knights’ organizational model.
 
New data from Extreme Networks and eCampus News, surveyed from 281 technical and administrative leaders across K-12 and higher education in North America, Latin America, Asia Pacific, Europe, and Middle East, found that 1 in 5 schools already have an esports program, and 71% are considering or might consider adding an esports program in the future. 88% of schools with esports programs in place said that their program diversifies extracurricular activities, 56% said it improves overall campus experience, 47% said it fosters interest in STEM, and 41% said it helps with student recruitment.

Blizzard saw huge demand for the launch of World of Warcraft Classic, which scored over 1,000,000 concurrent viewers on Twitch as well as wait times that lasted for hours on some servers, driving Activision’s stock up. The release comes as part of Blizzard celebrating World of Warcraft’s 15th anniversary.
 
Riot Games announced that it had settled a class-action lawsuit that alleged claims of “gender discrimination in pay and promotion, sexual harassment, and retaliation against women working at Riot offices in California.” In a statement the company writes that “We made a commitment to Rioters that we would be willing to take the steps necessary to build trust and to demonstrate that we’re serious about Riot evolving into an excellent place to work for all Rioters. Under these circumstances, we’ve had to look critically at our litigation approach to the class action lawsuit. While we believed that we had a strong position to litigate, we realized that in the long run, doing what is best for both Riot and Rioters was our ideal outcome. Therefore, rather than entrench ourselves and continue to litigate, we chose to pivot and try to take an approach that we believe best demonstrates our commitment to owning our past, and to healing the company so that we can move forward together. As such, we’re pleased to announce that we’ve come to an agreement in principle to settle the class action lawsuit against Riot.”
 
Razer is partnering with Tencent’s cloud services brand in a move designed to broaden “cloud-based game experiences” as well as “define the standards for cloud gaming”. The duo are eyeballing as many as 124.7 million players by 2022. The partnership is across three specific strategic areas; hardware, software, and “others”. “The collaboration between Razer and Tencent dates back to the days of Crossfire in 2008, and we are delighted that this relationship has gone from strength to strength with a shared commitment to bringing the best experience to the gamer community,” said Min-Liang Tan, co-founder and CEO of Razer. “Thanks to a continuous strengthening of our cooperation, we can offer an unrivalled cloud-based gaming experience to our increasingly sophisticated gaming community, supported by our integrated ecosystem of hardware, software and services.”
 
Millennial Esports announced that Formula 1 race winners Juan Pablo Montoya and Rubens Barrichello are backing the company and will take on the roles of ambassador and special advisor for the parent company of World’s Fastest Gamer after investing in the corporation. Montoya will act as judge for World’s Fastest Gamer season two alongside inaugural winner, Dutchman, Rudy van Buren.
