NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
Hulu snagged the streaming rights to the latest WGN America drama Manhattan. As of next week, new episodes will be available to Hulu Plus subscribers the day after airing on WGN, with the entire 13-ep season accessible after the TV finale. Those using the free version of Hulu will be able to watch the five most recently aired eps after a three-day delay. Manhattan follows scientists in the 1940s as they develop the first nuclear bomb, which was called the Manhattan Project.
 
Comedy Central
is turning fans’ tweets into an improv performance in its new weekly series CC: Social Scene. Comedian Paul Scheer will host the six-episode show, which is presented by Redd’s Apple Ale. Social Scene premiered yesterday on CC.com, CC YouTube channel and across CC’s social platforms.
 
Fox Sports Digital
and Sporting News Media teamed up for a new joint venture to share content, traffic and marketing resources across both sports platforms. FOX Sports is focused on developing audiences of sports fans across multiple video platforms, including FOXSports.com, YouTube, Facebook, Yardbarker, and now the SN ePlayer platform,” FOX Sports EVP, Digital Pete Vlastelica said. The partnership is expected to reach a minimum of 55 million digital sports fans in the U.S. every month.
 
Sarah Palin’s previously announced online channel went live yesterday, with a subscription-based model at a price of $9.95 a month or $99.95 for a year. The Sarah Palin Channel will take on the same form as Glenn Beck’s TheBlaze TV and address “important issues facing our nation.” Subscribers can post videos, ask questions and participate in online video chats.
 
International TV and movie streaming service DramaFever will bring a new slate of six new kids series to U.S. users this summer. The first two shows, 64 Zoo Lane and Pablo the Little Red Fox, are available on DF Kids. Pleasant Goat And Big Big Wolf will premiere on Aug. 4, Louie on Aug. 29, Lazy Lucy on Sept. 12 and Corneil & Bernie on Sept. 19.

CONTENT MEDIA
 

To continue the MADE for Music campaign launched a year ago, Budweiser unveiled the MADE Underground series with VICE music channel Noisey. The show follows street musicians creating a “busker band” to perform at the Budweiser Made in America festival on Aug. 30. The trailer for the series is available at budweisermusic.com, and episodes will premiere on Aug. 4, Aug. 12, Aug. 19 and Aug. 26.
 
Netflix added the documentary Virunga, about the endangered mountain gorillas in the Virunga Nation Park in the eastern Congo, yesterday. The streaming service recently acquired the docs E-Team, Mission Blue, The Battered Bastards of Baseball, Print the Legend and Brave Miss World.
 
In just 37 minutes, Vine’s 15-year-old star Shawn Mendes hit no. 1 on iTunes after releasing his first EP over the weekend. To achieve the quick success, Mendes asked his fans watching his live stream celebrating the release of his four songs to tweet “#shawntonumber1.” The hashtag then became Twitter’s top trending topic thanks to his 1.5 million followers. The young musician hit stardom after releasing a six-second video vine of him singing Justin Bieber’s “As Long As You Love Me.”
 
The first episode to the final season of Agatha Christie’s Poirot, titled The Big Four, is now available to stream on Acorn TV. The British TV streaming services will add Dead Man’s Folly on Aug. 11 and Curtain: Poirot’s Last Case on Aug. 25. All 70 episodes of the series will be available to watch on Acorn TV.
 
IFC turned seven of its most popular songs from the series Carfunkel and Oats into seven video-cards available on IFC.com in time for National Friendship Day on Aug. 3. Each card features a new 90-second musical performance from the comedy-folk duo with new hits like Self Esteem and The Fadeaway. Cards can be shared on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr or emailed. The show premieres on Aug. 7 at 10p ET on IFC.

ADVERTISING
 

Virtual Reality is not just technology of the future anymore, with major brands like Coca-Cola, HBO and Nissan making the first (very slow) foray into the platform. Ad Age reports that although the tech isn’t cheap ($39,000 for a pair of VR goggles), these brands are looking ahead by experimenting: Coke’s VR World Cup experience, Nissan’s IDx concept car at the Detroit Auto Show and HBO’s Game of Thrones ice wall simulation, for instance. “The mistake every new medium makes is trying to take what the old medium was,” filmmaker and music video director Chris Milk told Ad Age. “They read books on the radio at the beginning of radio; in the beginning of cinema, they shot plays. There’s a completely new form of storytelling that has to evolve for this new [VR] canvas.” VR not only refers to head-mounted displays but also smart glasses (Google Glass), and perhaps the most well known VR tech manufacturer, Oculus, which was acquired by Facebook in March for $2 billion. MarketsandMarkets predicts VR producers will reel in more than $1.06 billion in revenue by 2018.

AOL announced a partnership with Affiperf, Havas’ global trading desk for programmatic buying as a customer to AOL’s ONE platform. “As audiences fragment their video consumption across content and device, it is Affiperf’s duty to account for media efficacy holistically. Relying on ONE’s technology – in concert with Artemis’ DMP – we are able to bind together in real-time audiences, inventory and creative, creating meaningful connections between brands and consumers,” AOL’s Global Head of Programmatic Lawrence Taylor said. The ONE platform will go live in 2015.
