07/19/16: Gow goes national with SB Nation; NBC’s social soiree; ESPN fills a Wild void

Good morning. It’s Tuesday July 19, 2016, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

Gow Media is shedding the Yahoo Sport Radio label for its slate of affiliated radio station and had now locked in a deal with Vox Media to launch SB Nation Radio. The two companies will now collaborate to develop and distribute audio content, available across SB Nation’s community of over 300 digital properties, as well as Gow Media’s network of over 500 affiliate radio stations, Sirius Satellite Radio, and other mobile and digital platforms starting Aug. 1, offering new original audio programming, including new podcast franchises, and various on-air show formats. “SB Nation Radio will stand apart among the older legacy brands in the sports radio network landscape. This is not your grandfather’s sports radio network,” said David Gow, CEO, Gow Media. “SB Nation is young, fast-paced, and digitally savvy. This is the tone and energy audiences will hear on SB Nation Radio.”

ON THE AIR

The Final Round of The Open handed NBC Sports with a 3.94 in Nielsen overnight numbers, ranking as the second-highest for a major championship final round in 2016 behind the Masters. NBC’s coverage marked the highest final round overnight for The Open in nine years with the overnight rating up 50% vs. 2015 Sunday at St. Andrews.

ESPN confirmed that addition of Randy Moss to its lineup, where he will serve as an analyst on Sunday NFL Countdown and Monday Night Countdown and contribute to ESPN’s annual Super Bowl week coverage. For the past three years, Moss worked as a NFL analyst for FOX Sports on FOX NFL Kickoff.

Showtime’s Inside the NFL returns for season 39 on Sept. 6 at 9p, with this season’s lineup set to include the return of James Brown beside Phil Simms, Boomer Esiason and Brandon Marshall. Michael Irvin joins the cast as guest analyst throughout the season, with Adam Schein also returning to the show as a contributor and guest host.
 
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred told members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America that the league is mulling a shortening of the MLB season from 162 games over 183 days to 154. The AP writes that the decision would have a potent financial impact on the sport and its athletes, noting that Manfred stated “You want to work less, usually you get paid less.” 

BTN and BTN2Go offer 13-plus hours of live coverage at Big Ten Football Media Days, including the press conferences of all 14 Big Ten head football coaches, as well as remarks by Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany. Coverage begins at 1p on July 25 and continues the next day at 9a. Rick Pizzo and Glen Mason will anchor the press conference coverage from the BTN Studio on both Monday and Tuesday. On July 27, BTN will air a Kickoff Luncheon Special at 2p, showing each head coach will discuss the upcoming season.

ESPN celebrates ten years of the CrossFit Games with record coverage starting Friday at 7p.  Programming will once again air live on ESPN on both Friday and Saturday evenings and on ESPN2 on Sunday for the individual men and women and teams final events. ESPN carries 2016 Reebok CrossFit Games highlight shows this fall.

CSI Sports picked up Sport 10 channel in Belgium, which reached 1.3 million subscribers on the Proximus platform. ”We are really pleased that CSI Sports has decided to invest in Belgium,” said Proximus’ Stephanie Rockmann, Director Content and Media. ”We believe CSI Sports Group has the capacity to further develop Sport 10 and to offer a broader sports experience to ProximusTV subscribers.”

DIGITAL & STREAMING

Speaking of NBC Sports, the company added Sport Ngin to its portfolio, with the sports technology platform serving the youth and amateur sports participation market. MLS will be hosting a panel ahead of next week’s AT&T MLS All-Star Game. “The Future of Soccer: How Technology is Evolving The Beautiful Game Presented by Wells Fargo” on July 26 at 4p in San Jose’s San Pedro Square Market that will stream live at MLSsoccer.com, discussing the infusion of technology and data, such as instant replay, next-generation performance analytics, wearables and biometrics, data-driven scouting and cloud-connected stadiums and emceed by Roger Bennett.

Speaking of which, Major League Soccer and The Topps Company are launching TOPPS NOW MLS cards, highlighting players named to the MLS All-Star Gameday Roster, showcasing top plays and milestones throughout the season. The TOPPS NOW set begins with the announcement of MLS’s All-Star Gameday Roster. The physical cards will be available to purchase for a 24-hour period only on Topps.com.

Community mobility platform Rally, which offers pop-up mass transit to and from sporting events, concerts, and festivals, locked in a deal with MLB to “make transportation to and from MLB games easy, comfortable and most importantly, fun for fans.” Among the teams confirmed to participate include: Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago Cubs, Kansas City Royals, Miami Marlins, Milwaukee Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Mets, Texas Rangers and Washington Nationals.

Whoop goes on sale today to the general public to allow training “like a professional athlete.” The company also announced that 20 Olympic athletes, including swimmer Ryan Lochte, wrestler Adeline Gray, and beach volleyball team Casey Patterson and Jake Gibb, are training on the sports performance platform in preparation for Rio.

ESPORTS

Capcom announced a Street Fighter V DLC as part of Evo that was designed help fund the Capcom Pro Tour’s prize pool. The addition included a Capcom Cup Collection for Chun-Li and Cammy for $6 each, with a third "mystery" costume to be revealed later this year. Meanwhile, a new Capcom Pro Tour-themed stage, Ring of Destiny, is also out for $10 that echoes the background seen on ESPN2’s coverage this past weekend. The prize pool for the Capcom Cup will be "based on the content download numbers," according to the publisher.

ESL is tackling gamescom in Cologne with the last Heroes of the Storm Europe Regional of the year, with team fighting for $100,000 and a slot in the Fall Championship at BlizzCon 2016.

ROSTER MOVES

With the departure of John Wildhack from ESPN, the company named five executives to oversee its Programming and Production efforts. Stephanie Druley, Senior Vice President, Event & Studio Production, will take over responsibility for ESPN’s remote production portfolio including studio shows directly connected to those events such as NFL and MLB. Rob King, Senior Vice President, SportsCenter and News, will continue oversight of ESPN’s flagship show. Burke Magnus will continue in his role as Executive Vice President, Programming and Scheduling, managins the company’s program acquisitions and rights holder relations, and scheduling. Connor Schell, Senior Vice President, ESPN Films and Original Content, will add responsibility for the production of the ESPN2 daytime lineup, including First Take, His & Hers and Mike & Mike and assume management of NBA studio shows, ESPN Audio and the Talent Office. Norby Williamson, Executive Vice President, Production, will continue to oversee Production Operations, Remote Operations, Stats and Information, Creative and Studio Direction, ESPN International Production (with Tim Bunnell) and ESPN Deportes production.

ASICS America Corporation named Andrew Richard as the new Vice President of Regional Sales to lead the brand’s sales team. Richard comes to ASICS and most recently served as the Global Head of Merchandising for footwear at Puma.
