Comcast and Electronic Arts (EA) have partnered to develop an HD gaming platform on X1 called Xfinity Games. Streamed over the Internet to customers’ X1 set-top boxes, games would count under Xfinity Internet data plans. “We’ve always said X1 can deliver experiences beyond movies and shows,” Bryan Witkowski, Sr. Director, Strategic Development of New Businesses, Comcast Cable, told Cynopsis. “It’s been designed from the ground up with families and casual gamers in mind; using a smartphone or tablet as the controller, no downloads, no new hardware, no visit to the store for a physical controller or disk.”
Premium OTT services and SVOD platforms will more than double in revenue in just a few years, according to a new study from research firm MTM. Last year, OTT revenue grabbed $4 billion in revenue, a number expected to balloon to $8 to $12 billion by 2018. The study, commissioned by Ooyala and Vindicia, also forecasts Netflix will continue to dominate the space, but says 15 to 20 niche platforms will acquire 100,000 or more paying customers by 2018. Key areas for niche growth: sports, kids, anime, foreign shows and movies, ethnic content, and services created by a celebrity.
Vice Media signed a multiyear deal to provide content for Verizon’s upcoming Internet TV service, including exclusive programming. Verizon’s new service is expected to launch later this year, with Viacom, AwesomenessTV, Scripps Networks Interactive, as well as ESPN and CBS Sports for college sports programming. Hot commodity Vice also recently locked in deals with Spotify, Samsung and Snapchat.
Apple may be close to reaching a deal with the Big Four TV networks for a new live TV app, according to a report from the New York Post. If the tech giant succeeds, it could create a service along the lines of the late Aereo’s digital offering, only legit. Affiliate groups are being told by the networks that if they opt in and offer their feeds, they will be able to share in the added revenue the Apple streaming product will produce, a source told the Post.
Yahoo Global News Anchor Katie Couric’s latest interview debuted on Yahoo yesterday, and featured a different take on Harper Lee’s new book Go Set a Watchman, which hit shelves yesterday. In the video interview with Mary Badham, who played Scout in the film adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird, Badham responds to the new portrayal of Atticus Finch revealed in the book. PBS Digital Studios released a new Blank on Blank video, featuring an interview with Dustin Hoffman from 1971. Blank on Blank takes archived interviews and brings them to life through animated video. Check out a young Hoffman on YouTube.

Fantasy sports operator FanDuel closed $275 million in a Series E financing, bringing total capital raised to $363 million. Led by KKR, Google Capital and Time Warner Investments, Turner Sports and a number of NFL and NBA team owners participated in the funding round. Previous investors, including Shamrock Capital, NBC Sports Ventures, Comcast Ventures, Bullpen Capital, Pentech Ventures and Piton Capital also contributed. The financing will be used to increase customer acquisition efforts across the U.S., introduce new products and grow the company. FanDuel recently made multiyear partnerships with 13 NBA teams and 16 NFL teams.
Branded video service AnyClip Media raised $21 million in funding, led by Limelight Networks, Ervington Investments and previous investors including Jerusalem Venture Partners and GTI Capital Group. Individual investors in AnyClip include iHeartMedia CEO Bob Pittman and GTI CEO Michael Schulhof, who is the former president and CEO of Sony Corp. of America.
Amazon’s Twitch is leading the way when it comes to revenue in online game streaming. A report from SuperData noted that Twitch snatches 43 percent of the total revenue in the gaming content market, while YouTube snags 36 percent. The research firm also found that the online gaming content market takes in $3.8 billion spread across more than 486 million global viewers. In the U.S. alone, online game programming viewers increased from 86 million in 2013 to 125 million in 2015.
