Miss Oklahoma Olivia Jordan won the Miss USA pageant Sunday, but Reelz took the Twitter crown with its coverage of the competition. After pageant co-owner Donald Trump’s derogatory comments about Mexican immigrants prompted NBC and Univision to pull out, Reelz stepped in, and while “We sold half the commercial time that we might have” thanks to the controversy, Reelz CEO Stan E. Hubbard tells Cynopsis, “it was a great win for us, for all the right reasons. The pageant was able to go on. And it’s hard as an independent to get attention, but the industry noticed us – distributors, agencies and clients, and viewers. Everyone will look at us differently moving forward. The perception now is that we’re the little network that could.”

IN THE NEWS

Comcast announced the launch of SVOD service Stream, rolling out in Boston, Chicago and Seattle this year and available to all Comcast customers by early 2016. Viewers will have access to a dozen networks, including the major broadcast nets and HBO, as well as on-demand content and cloud-based DVR for $15/month. Unlike Dish Network service Sling TV, Stream will not include cable nets; Sling does not include access to broadcast nets.

The View officially announced Michelle Collins (The Gossip Queens) as co-host. The ABC daytime talker’s creator and exec producer, Barbara Walters, cited the new hire’s “intelligence, quick wit and vast knowledge of pop culture.” Rosie Perez announced last week she won’t be returning for season nineteen, launching in September.

Four Democratic senators are pushing FCC chairman Tom Wheeler to require greater transparency from cable and broadband operators. In a July 9 letter, senators Bernie Sanders, Al Franken, Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey asked the FCC to demand that operators provide detailed information about pricing, citing “huge price increases and often poor service.”

The drop in cable TV subscriptions during the second quarter of 2015 will be “markedly worse” than 2Q14’s 321,000 dip, projects MoffettNathanson’s Craig Moffett, noting, “The pace of cord-cutting and cord-nevering appears to have accelerated from 500,000 per year six months ago to more than 1.6 million annually as of Q1.” Upside for cable companies: a gain in broadband customers.

Ryan Seacrest has extended his agreement with iHeartMedia. “I‘ve been active in everything from broadcast radio to digital, from television to social media and more,” said Seacrest, “and the wonderful thing about my extended relationship with iHeartMedia is that it ties everything together.”

Anthony Anderson (black-ish), recently co-host of the BET Awards, is set to host the fifth annual MTV Africa Music Awards on Saturday, July 18 in South Africa. Marlon Wayans had the job in 2014.

The top 10 full episodes of Ancient Aliens will be released on History.com and the History app starting today. Ancient Aliens: Top 10 Revelations promotes the season premiere of the show on linear Friday, July 24.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

TNT ordered a pilot for Good Behavior from Chad Hodge (Wayward Pines), starring Downton Abbey’s Lady Mary, Michelle Dockery. Drama based on the Letty Dobesh books by Blake Crouch focuses on a fresh-out-of-prison con artist.

TV Land gave the green light for a pilot of I Shudder, a dark comedy starring Hamish  Linklater (The New Adventures of Old Christine). Paul Rudnick (In & Out) wrote, and will exec produce with Dan Jinks (Pushing Daisies).

From the team of Forrest Lucas and Ali Afshar comes production company ESX Entertainment, with the goal of developing feature films and digital/TV series. Lucas is the founder of cable net MAVTV; Afshar’s ESX Productions will be part of the new company.

Filming has begun in London and Cornwall on BBC One/Lifetime miniseries And Then There Were None, based on the Agatha Christie novel. Mammoth Screen and Agatha Christie Productions are producing.

COMING UP

Garage Sale Mystery: The Wedding Dress premieres on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries Sunday, August 9 at 9p. Lori Loughlin (When Calls the Heart) stars in the franchise’s fourth installment.

Ahead of Pope Francis I’s first papal visit to the U.S., American Public Television will premiere Pope Francis – The Sinner beginning Tuesday, September 1. Acquired from RTE Commercial Enterprises for syndication, the documentary examines how the self-described “sinner” is working to modernize a church in crisis.

Season four of Science Channel’s How the Universe Works premieres tonight at 10p. What’s ahead? “How the Universe Works not only illustrates the beauty and complexity of our universe, but does so in a way that really connects with Science Channel audiences,” Rita Mullin, net GM, tells Cynopsis. “With the help of leading experts, this season examines the inner workings of our cosmos to tell the larger story of our universe in a way that is both awe-inspiring and educational.”

Showtime’s The Affair, which last time around told the story of a Hamptons romance from two perspectives, adds the points of view of the cheated-upon mates for season two. Drama returns in the fall.

CASTING

Ian Ziering guests on Syfy’s Defiance on Friday, July 17 at 8p. The Sharknado star plays an arms dealer.

Almost-eight-year-old Alyvia Alyn Lind (A Deadly Adoption) will play a young Dolly Parton in NBC TV-movie Coat of Many Colors, about incidents in the singer’s life when she was a young girl.

Nathan Lane will play attorney F. Lee Bailey in FX limited series American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson, reports Deadline. All-star cast includes Cuba Gooding as Simpson.

BRANDS AND ADVERTISING

Maytag’s 2015 Maytag Man Campaign launches tonight with a 60-second spot, “Factory,” during the MLB All-Star game. The ad features five employees who won a company-wide contest asking them to share why they love working for the brand, part of an integrated campaign that includes an industry-first partnership with Major League Baseball. Agency of record for Whirlpool Co.: DigitasLBi.

GLOBAL GOINGS-ON

The host of Last Week Tonight With John Oliver and Lena Headey (Game of Thrones) have joined BBC reboot Danger Mouse. Oliver will voice a mad scientist while Headey takes on a secret agent in the animated series, headed for CBBC in the fall. “To get a chance to do it is like getting a chance to step into your childhood,” said Oliver, “which is both a magical and potentially hazardous thing.”

Anthony Anderson (black-ish) is set to host the fifth annual MTV Africa Music Awards (Mamas) on July 18 from South Africa. Last year’s presentation, hosted by Marlon Wayans, aired live on 48 countries and trended globally on Twitter.

DISTRIBUTION AND CARRIAGE

GetTV has added WADL in Detroit to its affiliate roster. The Sony Picture Television digital broadcast net, launched in February 2014, is now in markets representing 70 percent of U.S. TV households.

RATINGS

Nat Geo WILD’s third annual “Sharkfest” week of programming didn’t match the numbers of big kahuna Discovery’s “Shark Week,” but was up a whopping 60 percent compared with year-ago, and increased its primetime audience 100 percent compared to the previous six weeks. An irreverent promotional video, with comedian Rory Scovel saying, “We’re not that other week of Shark TV. We want you to confuse the two. And you will,” might have helped. “Nat Geo WILD is all about fun,” Geoff Daniels, EVP and GM, tells Cynopsis. “Our Sharkfest promo triggered a happy feeding frenzy, bringing in a huge number of new fans to the Sharkfest party.”

ABC’s Astronaut Wives Club grew 63 percent among A18-49 in Live+7 over its Live+SD rating, versus 27 percent the week prior. With playback, the drama hit a 1.3 rating, versus 1.4 the week before.

ABC’s Celebrity Family Feud on Sunday was the top-rated and most-watched show of the night with a 2.1/8 among A18-49 and 8.6 million viewers, the best since the game show’s premiere on June 12.

ABC Family’s The Fosters and Baby Daddy hit season and multi-month highs in total viewers (2.1 million and 1.3 million, respectively) and key demos, ranking as cable TV’s top scripted telecast in their time periods.

Wednesday’s premiere of TV One docu-series Unsung delivered a best-ever 1.41 among W25-54 (422,000), 1.33 HH (750,000), and 1.03 P25-54 (599,000), and was the number one telecast in television at 8p among Black P25-54, P18-49 and HHs.
