Time Inc. is boosting its Sports Illustrated portfolio via the acquisition of three companies that will now form the cornerstones of Sports Illustrated Play, a new business devoted to youth and amateur sports. Two of the new acquisitions – League Athletics and SportsSignup are dedicated to offering digital management tools that post game scores, keep track of schedules, statistics and standings and enable participants to register and communicate regularly. The two companies reach more than 8 million users. The third acquired business, iScore, offers a scoring app for youth baseball, basketball, soccer and other sports. Sports Illustrated Play will be topped by Jeff Karp.
“These acquisitions establish Time Inc.’s position in a youth sports space that now consists of approximately 30 million American athletes aged 5 to 17,” said Joe Ripp, CEO of Time Inc. “I know firsthand how team sports can empower children and teens. It is also a source of pride to older participants, whether they’re involved as parents, coaches or provide moral support. Youth sports are activities that touch one’s entire life span and are a tremendous force of good in the lives of American families.”
As we turn our attention to the MLB All-Star Game, ESPN detailed plans for this year’s 2015 Gillette Home Run Derby on Monday, July 13, at 8p. The channel lined up a shiny new commentator team for the annual event that will include Chris Berman, the voice of the Home Run Derby, joining John Kruk and Aaron Boone, along with reporters Pedro Gomez and Nicole Briscoe. Baseball Tonight will relocate to to Great American Ball Park for the event to kick off three hours of coverage starting at 5p, followed by SportsCenter, hosted by Lindsay Czarniak, at 6p. Meanwhile, the 2015 MLB Legends & Celebrity Softball All-Star Game is slated to begin around 11p. ESPN Radio’s Mike & Mike will broadcast their national radio show live from the Moerlein Lager House, located across the street from Great American Ball Park, during MLB All-Star festivities on Monday, July 13, and Tuesday, July 14.
Meanwhile, FOX Sports hits the octagon during UFC’s International Fight Week (taking place in Las Vegas) with a record numbers of live hours across 8 days on FOX Sports 1. Progamming includes coverage of two back-to-back fight cards UFC 189: Mendes vs. McGregor on July 11 and The Ultimate Fighter Finale: American Top Team vs. Blackzilians on July 12, along with midweek events – UFC Fight Night: Mir vs. Duffee on July 15 and UFC Fight Night: Bisping vs. Leites on July 18. Coverage kicks off on FOX Sports 1 tonight at 8p with UFC Tonight.
The FOX family also laid out talent assignments for the crucial CONCACAF Gold Cup, which launched yesterday and runs through July 26. FOX Sports’ Rob Stone, fresh off a stint hosting over 40 FIFA Women’s World Cup Today programs, leads leads on-air duties, joining Mark Rogondino and Ross Dyer. Analysts working studio coverage include Alexi Lalas, Eric Wynalda, Stu Holden, Brad Friedel, Warren Barton, Cobi Jones, Mariano Trujillo and Dr. Joe Machnik.
NUVOtv gets back in the ring with its original weekly boxing docu-series Knockout tonight at 10p. This season will be led by trainers Floyd Mayweather Sr., “Sugar” Shane Mosley and John “Iceman” Scully. In addition, Roy Jones Jr. will serve as host of the series in which nine fighters vie for a chance to fight in the finals and a chance to become top WBA contenders.
Mylan World TeamTennis’ 40th season launches on Sunday with 15 matches ready to roll on ESPN3 and wrapping up with the finals live on ESPN2 on Aug. 2. The first match airs Monday, July 13, at 10p pitting the Philadelphia Freedoms and the San Diego Aviators.
The NCAA’s proposal to redefine full grant-in-aid to include up to the full cost of attendance for students got another round of support Western Collegiate Hockey Association announced its backing of the measure. In a joint statement, officials said that “The WCHA’s priority will always be to provide the very best collegiate experience for our student-athletes, both on and off the ice. We are dedicated to supporting our student-athletes in all areas, with the ultimate goal of preparing them for graduation and fostering success during and after their time on campus. We support NCAA legislation that redefines an athletics grant-in-aid to include up to the full cost of attendance, while allowing individual discretion to each institution on the amount they choose to provide within those parameters.”
The PGA of America deepened its distance form Donald Trump’s immigration remarks, announcing that its Grand Slam of Golf would no longer be held at Trump National Golf Club in Los Angeles on Oct. 19-21. The PGA is exploring alternatives to the event, along with its annual PGA Junior League Golf Championship that also was to be held at Trump National Los Angeles.
Congratulations to ESPN’s Tom Jackson, who was named recipient of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award. The honor will take place during the 2015 Enshrinement Ceremony in Canton on August 8.

John Deere signed on to extend its role as a title sponsor of professional golf through 2023 via a seven-year extension with the PGA TOUR. Univision Deportes unveiled the launch of its TV Everywhere campaign offering live streaming of the CONCACAF Gold Cup soccer tournament.
