Vince Gilligan (Breaking Bad) inked a new three-year deal with Sony Pictures Television, his home for eleven years, that calls for him to continue as EP/showrunner on Better Call Saul with Peter Gould, as well as develop new projects via his High Bridge Productions. “Vince is a cornerstone of the success of Sony Pictures Television and could not be a more important member of the Sony family. He is a phenomenal talent and a true friend,” said SPT President Jeff Frost and co-presidents Chris Parnell and Jason Clodfelter.
Outside Magazine and The Gotham Group are partnering to produce content for TV, film and new media.
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
New Starz unscripted series Warriors of Liberty City debuts Sunday, September 16 at 8p. Show follows a youth football program founded by hip-hop pioneer Luther Campbell in a crime-ridden neighborhood of Miami.
Original drama The First lands on Hulu Friday, September 14. Sean Penn leads an ensemble cast in the series from Beau Willimon (House of Cards) about a crew of astronauts attempting to be the first humans on Mars.
The Killer Closer, detailing shocking homicide cases, premiere on ID Friday, August 10 at 10p.
Smithsonian Channel’s Sacred Sites is back for season two on Monday, August 13 at 8p. Premiere explores the legend of King Arthur.
Diesel Brothers returns to Discovery Channel’s Motor Mondays lineup starting July 30 at 10p. Season launches with the build of a monster school bus.
Highlights of PBS’s fall schedule include The Great American Read, hosted by Meredith Vieira, exploring the power of reading on Tuesdays, September 11-October 23. Masterpiece series The Miniaturist premieres Sunday, September 9 at 9p; The Durrells in Corfu is back for season three on Sunday, September 30 at 8p, followed by the season four premiere of Poldark at 9p; and drama The Woman in White arrives Sunday, October 21 at 10p.
New partners joining Discovery for “Shark Week” include Tinder, Pledgeling, Equinox and Lyft. Tinder will offer five branded profile cards for the Tinder app, and Tinder and charitable giving platform Pledgeling are teaming to give winners and their dates a diving trip to the Bahamas. Equinox is hosting Shark Week swim classes and swim caps, and Lyft app users can end code Shark Week to unlock custom experiences.
UnREAL has jumped from Lifetime to Hulu for its fourth and final season, streaming now. Season three averaged an underwhelming 270,000 total viewers in Live+SD Nielsens on Lifetime, but has proven a popular binge on Hulu. “UnReal has captivated audiences on Hulu since Season 1, so when this opportunity came to us, we knew we couldn’t miss out,” said Craig Erwich, SVP of content, Hulu. “This is a unique way to both satisfy fans of the show, while also continuing to introduce it to new audiences.”
Consumers aren’t just turning to Amazon to purchase products, they’re using it to compare prices, according to the Future Shopper Report from Salmon. Salmon reports 80% of shoppers check Amazon reviews and prices even when they’re looking for products elsewhere. And thank Amazon Prime for changing consumer expectations, including the 63% of millennials that expect delivery within 24 hours.
Netflix had slower growth than forecast, adding 5.2 million subscribers in 2Q18, about one million less than projected. The streamer, which saw its stock drop 13% in after-hours trading, blamed the miss on aggressive subscriber forecasts. “The quarterly guidance we provide is our actual internal forecast at the time we report and we strive for accuracy, meaning in some quarters we will be high and other quarters low relative to our guidance,” said CEO Reed Hastings in a letter to shareholders. “This Q2, we over-forecasted global net additions which amounted to 5.2M vs. a forecast of 6.2M and flat compared to Q2 a year ago, as acquisition growth was slightly lower than we projected.”
Zone TV is introducing suite of video services under the AI-powered zone·tv Studio brand, that enable content owners and video distributors to create self-branded, linear TV channels that can be personalized and customized by each viewer in the household. “Traditional video distribution is in a state of disruption as hundreds of direct-to-consumer streaming services are emerging, making it difficult to maintain customer loyalty,” said Jeff Weber, CEO, zone·tv. “Our technology means that any video distributor or content owner can build new, precisely targeted, compelling channels which enable a more relevant content consumption experience for their customers.”
Roku is launching Roku Wireless TV Speakers, a $200 audio system that will work with any Roku-based TV set that has shipped since 2014. Speakers are scheduled to start shipping in late October; early birds can grab pre-order with promo pricing of $149.99 now through July 23. Bundle includes a remote that controls both the TV and the speakers via Wi-Fi.
The Washington Post has launched a streaming news channel on gamer-focused Twitch. Effort kicks off with two shows: live news coverage by Libby Casey, starting yesterday with President Trump’s Vladmir Putin meeting, and Playing Games with Politicians (politicians being interviewed while they play video games) starting July 19.
CNN has a website in the works focused on business and tech, part of a restructuring that will have business web sites CNN Money, CNN Tech and CNN Media under the new CNN Business umbrella.
Programmatic ad platform MediaMath raised $225 million in a private equity round, from Searchlight Capital. The company is looking for funds for expansion and acquisitions.

Global online video users spend an average 67 minutes a day watching content, up from 56 minutes last year, per Zenith Online’s Video Forcast 2018. While online video viewing rose 91% between 2015 and 2017, total ad spend grew just 52%. The cost of online video advertising has therefore dropped substantially, noted Zenith, predicting, “As the growth of video consumption grows we expect prices to stabilize, with mild increased from 2019 onwards.”
