Legendary Entertainment sold film rights for zombie video game Dead Rising to Sony entertainment network Crackle. “Dead Rising has a built-in fan base and rich characters that are ideal for digital storytelling,” Legendary Digital Media’s President of Content and Distribution Tom Lesinski said. Crackle will premiere the video game film adaptation in the U.S., and Content Media (distributor of upcoming Street Fighter series) will make it available via SVOD, DVD, VOD and TV.

Videogame broadcasting platform Twitch will now push alerts to its users on YouTube when they stream videos. The deal is part of the Twitch Live Annotations promotional feature, a way for Twitch users to grow their audience by letting viewers know when they’re live on Twitch. Variety reports Google made a preliminary deal to acquire Twitch for $1 billion.
New York Times bestseller The Calorie Myth was made into a web series from Quest Nutrition. Author Jonathan Bailor will host the six-episode series, with a new ep premiering every Sunday at YouTube.com/QuestNutrition.
Kid’s entertainment destination Toon Goggles launched a new tween-friendly music service and news content platform, called TG EVO. Young users will have access to more than eight million songs from movie soundtracks, and news clips meant for a tween audience. “We want to give kids and parents a virtual playground where they can enjoy any entertainment they want safely and without compromise…and offer [what other kid’s entertainment] streaming video apps don’t have: radio, news and games,” TG’s CTO James Cahall said.
Actress Rosario Dawson has joined the upcoming 2015 Marvel series Daredevil. She will star as the main damsel, alongside Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock character (aka the Daredevil). Additionally, the streaming service cast Lost’s Daryl Hannah, Les Miserables actor Terrence Mann and 14 others in the original sci-fi show Sense8. The ten-ep series follows a telepathically linked group of people from around the world, and will also premiere in 2015…
…in other Netflix news: Orange is the New Black took home three Critics’ Choice Television Awards last week. The Netflix series was awarded for “best comedy series,” actress Kate Mulgrew won for “best supporting actress in a comedy” and Uzo Aduba for “best guest performer in a comedy.”
Amazon’s new half-hour comedy pilot Really from Jay Chandrasekhar (Super Troopers) has been cast. The show will feature Chandrasekhar as the star, along with Sarah Chalke (Scrubs), Travis Schuldt (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Selma Blair (Anger Management) and comedian Rob Delaney. The show is about suburban Chicago couples trying to recapture their youth, and will be part of the new wave of Prime Instant Video pilot program. The dramedy The Cosmopolitans and drama Hand of God will also be part of the pilot season that starts in late 2014.
Hulu released a pilot from WIGS and Fox for a TV series based on bestselling young-adult novel Delirium. The show is set in the future, where people must take a drug to keep emotions at bay, and stars Emma Roberts (Palo Alto) and Dan Kagasoff (The Secret Life of the American Teenager). However, the pilot will only be available for 24 days on the streaming service.

Apple is planning to enter the smartwatch market with multiple versions of the gear starting in October. The Wall Street Journal reports Apple’s tech will have a 2.5-inch or larger touchscreen, and ten sensors built in the design to measure health activity. Apple is expected to ship between 10 and 15 million watches by the end of the year.
Twitter promoted former sales head Adam Bain to oversee business development, while marketing and communications head Gabriel Stricker will lead the Media branch. The moves come after the company’s COO Ali Rowghani and Media chief Chloe Sladden resigned on June 13.

French dancer-choreographer Yanis Marshall, who most recently appeared on the finale of Britain’s Got Talent, wants to make it clear that he went viral before the reality show. Marshall released a Beyonce mash-up dance routine done completely in high-heels. The video has more than two million views on YouTube since it hit the web last week, which Marshall responded in a tweet with: “LITTLE REMINDER – I was VIRAL before @GotTalent & I’m still VIRAL now.
