06/22/15: Netflix orders comedy from Mitch Hurwitz, Maria Bamford; Snapchat signs deal with Live Nation; Whistle Sports hires new Chief Creative Officer

Netflix ordered a new comedy series from Arrested Development’s Mitch Hurwitz: Lady Dynamite, which Hurwitz will executive produce and in which Maria Bamford will star. South Park’s Pam Brady, Hurwitz and Bamford wrote and produced the pilot; the streaming service ordered 13 episodes of the half-hour comedy. Hurwitz signed a multi-year deal with Netflix in 2014, and is working on Will Arnett comedy Flaked. Another season of Arrested Development has yet to be confirmed.
Snapchat snagged a deal with Live Nation Entertainment for a new Live Stories feature, beginning with last weekend’s Las Vegas’ Electric Daisy Carnival. Live Stories showcases content at festivals and concerts owned by Live Nation in a partnership that will last through 2016. Each edition of Live stories has attracted an average of 20 million users in 24 hours, according to SnapChat Director of Partnerships Ben Schwerin. Last week, the disappearing app announced branded “geofilters,” beginning with McDonalds as the first to sign on to the program.


Add PBS Digital’s Steve Goldbloom (Everything But the News) to the list of creators who are debuting shows on Facebook. Brief but Spectacular is a weekly short-form in which an off-camera Goldbloom interviews guests such as Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, as well as Jill Soloway (creator of Transparent). New episodes will premiere every Thursday at 8a on NewsHour’s FB page, before its broadcast on the show that evening. “Whether they’re viewers who check their Facebook status in the morning or those who organize their evenings around the PBS NewsHour broadcast, I think they have a lot more in common than they think," Goldbloom told Cynopsis.
Dish Network’s Sling TV signed Turner Classic Movies (TCM) to be the newest addition to the OTT’s “Hollywood Extra” pack. For an extra $5 a month, Sling TV owners can now access movies from TCM, EPIX, EPIX2, EPIX3, EPIX Drive-In and SundanceTV with their “Best of Live TV” subscription, for $20/month.
…in more Sling TV news: Maker Studios unveiled another channel on Dish’s OTT player. Polaris+ is an extension to the Disney multi-channel network’s gaming vertical Polaris (three billion views per month on YT). In addition, the channel will offer original long-form programming for Sling TV users.
Starz Play landed on the Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV stick on Friday. Amazon device owners can view more than 300 movies and 150 episodes of original Starz programming such as Power, Outlander and Black Sails. Play is also available on Xbox consoles, Chromecast, Apple and Android devices and on PC and Mac computers.
Vimeo exclusively released a new documentary about the YouTube a cappella group turned reality-competition stars Pentatonix. Called On My Way Home, the 90-minute doc, which won NBC’s third season of The Sing Off, follows the group after the success of their holiday album and Grammy win. The film debuted on Vimeo On Demand for $14.99. Pentatonix has more than 8.2 million subscribers on YT and more than one billion lifetime views.
Yahoo Movies
premiered the exclusive trailer for Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg’s new comedy called Daddy’s Home. The film hits theaters on Christmas Day.

The Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement (CIMM) announced that mobile research and consumer analytics company RealityMine will undertake their Children and Teen Measurement project. The aim is to take a comprehensive view of cross-platform, digital and mobile measurement of content and ads among children and teens ages two to 17. The initiative also includes TiVo Research TV viewership data. “For the first time, we’ll be able to look inside the new dynamics of cross-media usage of the entire family within a household, describe the total consumption behaviors of individuals and obtain a view of total viewership across platforms of individual programs,” said Jane Clarke, CEO and Managing Director for CIMM. Viacom, Disney, Turner Broadcasting are all CIMM partners.


Multi-channel network Whistle Sports hired Bob Ciosek as Chief Creative Officer. Prior to joining the MCN, Ciosek launched Bold Studios, a creative and strategic consulting firm, where he developed media assets for clients such as ABC, FOX Sports and ESPN.
