Welcome to Leadership Lessons, the column that focuses on conversations with senior managers and leaders in the media world, speaking candidly about their professional journeys. Today, meet Jim Berger, Chief Executive Officer of High Noon Entertainment.
What was your first leadership position and what lessons did you learn from it?
I was named Captain of my high school ice hockey team and those lessons have influenced me throughout my career. First, the concept of standing up for every member of the team, which is especially important in a very physical game where fights occur frequently. Second, leading by example versus by fear. Teammates don’t respond to screaming and threats; they follow a leader who sets his focus and pushes forward. Finally, vision is critical. If the leader envisions a winning season, others will see it as well.
What’s the most important part of managing a staff?
The ability to close your eyes, imagine how successful your company will look in five years, and convey that image in great detail to your staff. I believe that if you can see it, the universe might just conspire, but only if your friends and colleagues and staffers also believe. Therefore the reason to have all heading toward the same shining light out on the horizon.
Tell us about a difficult management problem and what you did to overcome it.
Nearly ten years ago we experienced a fierce downturn within our business and within the span of six months, went from ten shows to just two. Staff morale hit a low as rumors spread that we were closing our doors. So we gathered our hundreds of employees and freelancers and I shared everything, including many behind the scenes details of our finances; left nothing out. Most important, I conveyed that we had no intention of folding, and that things would turn around in this wildly volatile business. I believe it set a communication-tone for the company that we’ve adhered to ever since.
What do you look for when interviewing job candidates?
Smarts, a love of pop culture, loyalty, and hustle. If I have a sense that they’ll do whatever it takes to move the company toward that goal on the horizon, they’re the ones hired. Just like my ice hockey teammates throughout high school and college — if they work for the good of the team, they’ll work for High Noon.
