Netflix may be bidding big on its next original series. The streaming service is close to signing a deal to acquire The Crown from Sony Pictures Television, which TechCrunch reports will likely well exceed House of Cards‘ $100 million price tag. The historical drama, following Queen Elizabeth II over the course of her reign, is being written by Peter Morgan (The Queen, The Last King of Scotland).

Hulu Plus
nabbed exclusive rights to digital studio Vuguru films Play Nice, Crawlspace and The Fuzz. Play Nice, starring 24‘s Mary Lynn Rajskub, follows a couple trying to get their son into preschool; Crawlspace centers on a baker moving into his family’s house after his is foreclosed, and The Fuzz depicts a cop partnership between a puppet and a human. Hulu most recently gained exclusive rights to Fox‘s The Mindy Project, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and shows from NBCU‘s Bravo and E! networks.

Jerry Seinfeld‘s hit web series Comedian in Cars Getting Coffee will return to Sony entertainment network Crackle on June 19. Coming up on season four: Jon Stewart, Aziz Ansari and Sarah Jessica Parker. During this year’s Digital NewFronts, Crackle announced the show, sponsored by Acura, will add 24 new eps to extend through season nine.

British TV streaming site Acorn TV added three new programs yesterday: Blandings, Seires 2, Jeeves & Wooster and An Idiot Abroad. Acorn TV content can be viewed at http://www.Acorn.TV and on its Roku channel.

To honor the 100th anniversary of WWI and the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion, History announced a social media campaign calling on serving soldiers and loved ones to submit photos and a brief story through Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. All submissions will be included on History’s Facebook page, and run on air during D-DAY on Jun 6 at 9p ET.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

E! launched its new TV everywhere app, E! Now, giving fans access to live streaming of The Soup, Chelsea Lately, Keeping Up with the Kardashians and more. The app is currently available for iOS devices, with an app for Android arriving in June.

AD PLATFORMS

AOL is once again expanding its programmatic buying biz, acquiring the TV audience-targeting platform PrecisionDemand to integrate with Adap.TV. "With PrecisionDemand now on board at AOL, we are accelerating our efforts in creating the platforms needed to manage today’s multiscreen video world," Adap.TV CEO Toby Gabriner said in a blog post. AOL acquired Adap.TV last year for $405 million, and announced the programmatic ad platform, ONE, in March 2014.

Conde Nast has extended its programmatic sales technology partnership with Google. Ad Age reports the publisher has privately been within Google’s ad exchange since 2011, and plans to double down on pitching advertisers on programmatically buying its Lightbox ads. Major publishers including The New York Times, Time inc., and Hearst also run private exchanges with Google.

EXEC MOVES

Aditya Chatterjee joined Global Eagle Entertainment as its new Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President of Engineering. Chatterjee was most recently CTO and Vice president of Engineering for Spacenet.

RESEARCH

People are sharing videos at almost double the rate they were just a year ago. According to new research from Unruly, its Social Diffusion Curve, measuring how fast videos are spread across social networks, showed shares within the first week of a video release increased from 37 percent in 2013 to 65 percent this year. The research also showed 42 percent of a video’s total shares happen within the first three days of launch in social streams.

Digital advertising spending is expected to grow faster in media and entertainment than in other U.S. industries, hitting $8.54 billion by 2018. "Virtually every advertiser has a dual need to build their brand and also drive lower-funnel actions," Yahoo‘s VP of North American Field Sales Mark Ellis told eMarketer. "Some super high-end branded advertisers will never sell anything online, and some direct marketers are only interested in driving acquisitions. So everyone is playing both sides."
