NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

YouTube is close to reeling in video gaming streaming service Twitch in a $1 billion deal. Twitch, which claims more than a million users and 45 million site visitors/month, allows gamers to stream live action from consoles like Play Station 4 and Xbox One. However, Google wasn’t the only one to approach the web service: Microsoft also made a serious offer, according to The Verge. Twitch already pulls in more traffic than Facebook, Amazon and Hulu, at 1.8 percent of U.S. peak web traffic, behind Apple‘s 4.3 percent.

Twitter may take another stab at the music business. Since shutting down its #Music app, Recode reports Twitter is eying music and audio sharing site SoundCloud. The "YouTube for audio" service announced it in October 2013 that it has 250 million users and is valued at $700 million.

Scripps Networks Interactive online lifestyle platform Ulive added two new series, and second seasons of originals EstheKitchen and Sick Kitchens with Nadia G. New offerings come from comedian and mom Carey Reilly, who searches for inner peace in Dear Buddha; Fit Nonstop arrives courtesy of SoulCycle instructor and YouTuber Kym Perfetto. The shows are available on Vimeo or Ulive.com.

Popcornflix ramped up the laughs yesterday with the debut of its Popcornflix Comedy channel. Along with a new library of movies, Popcornflix Comedy is releasing its own original series called Live at New York Comedy Club. Every month, six new episodes will feature on-location filmed stand-up routines from comedians like Sirius XM‘s Eric Neumann and NBC‘s Miguel Dalmau. "We’re excited to be joining the short list of digital providers creating original programming," Popcornflix’s EVP David Fannon told Cynopsis.

CONTENT MEDIA

Yesterday, AMC premiered the first episode of new tech-focused drama Halt and Catch Fire on Tumblr, VOD and TV Everywhere platforms. AMC additionally launched a branded network Tumblr page integrated with AMC.com. "Halt and Catch Fire is a fun ride through the early days of the PC era… [it’s] a good fit for Tumblr’s first TV series premiere and AMC’s first social media screening," AMC President Charlie Collier said. The episode will run on the digital platforms until May 31, before hits the network on June 1 at 10p.

Despite an uncertain future, Aereo is promoting its premium service with a 30-day trial offer. The upgrade provides an extra antenna, and 60 hours of storage for $12 a month compared to its $8 plan with one antenna and 20 hours of DVR storage. The Supreme Court is expected to make a June decision on Aereo’s legality

SOCIAL MEDIA

The Weather Channel and Toyota have created a social media photo contest called #ItsAmazingOutThere, asking pro and amateur photographers for submissions that illustrate the power and beauty of nature. Images can be posted and voted for on The Weather Channel’s Facebook page, or at weather.com/photocontest until July 13. National Geographic photographers like Adam Ravetch and Steve Winter will be on the judging panel, and results will be announced on Aug 15, with $15,000 going to the top winner. "Over the last two years we’ve been transforming weather.com and our mobile apps into a real destination for both photographers and anyone who loves powerful images of Mother Nature," The Weather Company’s Editor-in-Chief and VP of Content Neil Katz told Cynopsis. "[We want to] let photographers know that if they take great shots of travel, nature, wildlife and of course weather, we want them to come here first."

Nielsen is launching demographics for its Twitter TV ratings, after analysis revealed broad age and gender distribution across programming and significant differences in the age and gender of profiles of tweeters across programming types. What does it mean for marketers? "Twitter enables TV networks and advertisers to reach audiences beyond their core demographics," said the report. "Programs can complement and extend traditional TV reach through Twitter TV audiences." On average, Twitter TV authors for sports skewed 79 percent male; reality shows skewed 65 percent female, with 75 percent under the age of 35.
