IN THE NEWS

Fox Television Stations ordered a TV version of Snapchat dating show Phone Swap to air on select Fox stations this summer. In the series, strangers check out what’s on each other’s phones before deciding whether to go on a date. Vertical Networks, founded by daughter-of-Rupert Elisabeth Murdoch, will produce.

The Resident has made it to season two on Fox. “The producers set out to create a medical show that viewers haven’t seen before – to peel back the curtain and reveal the truth of what happens, both good and bad, behind the scenes at hospitals across the country,” said Michael Thorn, president, entertainment. “Clearly, they’ve succeeded.”

HBO will air feature-length documentary Stolen Daughters: Kidnapped by Boko Haram in the fall. Film showing how the girls freed from the horrific 2014 kidnapping adapted to life after imprisonment is a co-production with BBC2 and ARTE France.

Season five of Arrested Development lands on Netflix Tuesday, May 29. The entire series regular cast, as well as creator Mitch Hurwitz, are onboard. That includes Jeffrey Tambor, fired from his award-winning role on Amazon’s Transparent amid allegations of sexual harassment. “I drove myself and my castmates crazy. Lines got blurred. I was difficult. I was mean,” said Tambor in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter. But as for the harassment allegations, “absolutely not.”

Meanwhile, Transparent’s fifth season, without Tambor, will be its last, creator Jill Soloway said in the Reporter story. “Hopefully it sets the Pfeffermans up with some sort of beautiful reclaiming,” said Soloway.

Do you think Transparent was right to cut ties with Jeffrey Tambor? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/.

Comet TV is celebrating Mother’s Day, sort of, with a “Mommy Issues Movie Marathon” on Sunday, May 13. Think fondly of Mom while you’re watching Deranged, Wicked Stepmother, Mom and My Mom’s a Werewolf.

“Data breaches and privacy rights have risen to the forefront. What does the future hold for data driven targeting for publishers and advertisers? Who should own the data? What rights will consumers have? What role should the government have in securing a consumer’s right to their own data? These are just a few questions that will be addressed at the Cynopsis Measurement & Data conference.” – Brad Adgate

This is one of those stories.”

ADVERTISING

Meredith Corp.’s people-based advertising technology company Viant announced its cloud-based Data Lake, aimed at providing advertisers a fully transparent view of what they’re getting from their cross-channel advertising investment, has launched out of beta. “Our goal is to empower our clients to unlock their imagination,” said Fabrizio Blanco, chief technology officer. “With the tools and data we provide they can finally turn big data from cost center to profit center.”

The IAB published a whitepaper on video content, noting the need for innovation in video advertising content and formats; a focus on consumer experience, with enhanced choice and control; and deeper engagement and direct relationships for marketers and publishers. The study, “Building 21st Century Brands: Video Creative Innovation,” looks at emerging ad formats, like 6-second video, and concludes with immediate steps the IAB is taking: curation and education, research and thought leadership, and measurement and standardization. You’ll find the study here.

The IAB also launched the IAB Esports Guide, to help marketers understand a fast-evolving business with an audience that will top 380 million this year. “So how can marketers get in the game and reach them? “Our biggest piece of advice would be to not overcomplicate it,” wrote Turner SportsSeth Ladetsky, NFL Media’s Brian Matthews and Activision Blizzard’s Mike Sepso in a blog post Monday. “In many ways, getting involved with esports does not have to be drastically different than getting involved with a traditional sports marketing opportunity.”

DIGITAL DATA

The IAB announced that the first Digital Content NewFronts West are scheduled for October 9 and 10. Unlike the New York NewFronts, presentations for brands and buyers will take place in one central location, at NeueHouse Hollywood. “NewFronts West is going to be a ‘must-attend’ event for planners and buyers based in Los Angeles (where entertainment, technology and content intersect) as they seek to keep their brand clients up-to-date on the latest that original digital programming has to offer,” said Charlotte Cochrane, EVP Managing Partner, Horizon Media. “The medium attracts a younger, challenging-to-reach audience that marketers value and presents meaningful opportunities for brand messaging and integrations.”
