Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 6, 2014, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

Welcome to Leadership Lessons, the column that focuses on conversations with senior managers and leaders in the TV world, speaking candidly about their professional journeys and how that informs what they look for when hiring new employees. Today, meet Sally Sy-Caruso, Director of Talent Acquisition for BBC Worldwide Americas.

What are the top 3 qualities you look for when interviewing a candidate?
For me they’re:
1.  Intelligence – Ability to plan, organize, solve problems, get the job done. Use common sense
2.  Leadership/Mentoring ability – Ability to take charge and be accountable for your work (and your team’s work) – Have a desire to learn and teach others.
3.  Adaptability – Business constantly changes – can you roll with it and get back on track? Learn your surroundings and know how to interact with many different personalities.

Do you think that candidates have changed in the last 5 years? And if so, how?
Yes, I believe quality candidates are more self-aware, willing to discuss their strengths and areas for improvement. Plus, I feel there are so many more skills that are assessed to find the right candidate to fit a role.

Recent college graduates are also more advanced. Most have had many internships, corporate experiences and international experiences with study abroad programs, which are part of their core curriculum.

What’s a better thank you-vehicle: an email or a handwritten note?
It doesn’t matter as long as the note is thoughtful and not cookie-cutter. If you’re interviewed by more than one hiring manager for a role (usually the norm now), please don’t cut and paste the same note to each of them. It’s not uncommon for those receiving the note to share them with each other.

What are the warning flags you look for in a resume? (typos, job hopping, missing sections?)
Typos are not good. You should proofread your resume and cover letter. There can be explanations for the lack of longevity at a company/position and time gaps; I have spoken to candidates who are lucky enough to take a 3-month vacation!

EXECUTIVE MOVES

A+E Networks appointed David Granville-Smith its Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Officer. Previously, Granville-Smith was a Managing Director and Head of the Media Group in the Investment Banking Division of J.P. Morgan.

Clara Kim was named Executive Vice President, Business and Legal Affairs for National Geographic Channels and National Geographic Channels International. The hire is part of a previously announced restructuring of Fox Networks Group‘s business and legal affairs team.

Mark Bracco has been tapped to serve as Executive Vice President of Programming and Development for Dick Clark Productions. Most recently, Bracco was Vice President, Alternative Series and Specials, ABC Entertainment.

The Africa Channel announced the hire of Narendra Reddy as Senior Vice President of Programming and Production, and the promotion of Brian Newton to the position of Vice President of Marketing & Digital. Reddy was most recently General Manager of DreamWorks Animation India; Newton joined AC last year as Creative Director.

Iness Pleus was upped to Senior Vice President, Operations, Brand Marketing & Creative, Spike TV. Previously, Pleus was Vice President, Operations, Creative Group.

Detavio Samuels was named President of One Solution, the cross-platform integrated marketing initiative of Radio One and TV One. Most recently, Samuels served as President of GlobalHue-Detroit.

Michael Liebman has joined digital media management company Yangaroo as Director, Digital Advertising Technical Operations. Liebman was most recently Senior Engineer at Fox News Channel.

Discovery Communications promoted Victoria Lowell to the position of Executive Vice President of Marketing for TLC and Animal Planet. Lowell had been Senior Vice President of marketing for Animal Planet and Science Channel.

Vasant M. Prabhu was appointed Chief Financial Officer for NBCUniversal. Prabhu had been Chief Financial Officer for Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc.

Mark O’Connell has been named Vice President, Content Distribution for UP and ASPiRE. O’Connell was most recently Vice President, TV Networks Distribution at NBCUniversal. 

As part of a company reorganization, Brooke Runnette, president of National Geographic Television, adds production responsibilities, overseeing all video, television and film production for the National Geographic Society.

The Associated Press named Isaac Lee, CEO of Fusion and President of News for Univision, to its board of directors, along with Bill Hoffman, President of Cox Media Group and Rob King, Senior Vice President of SportsCenter and News for ESPN.

ITV Studios America appointed Tom Lane Senior Vice President, Business & Legal Affairs. Lane was previously SVP, Business & Legal Affairs at CBS Studios International.

National Geographic Channel is expanding its development team with the hires of Nicole Reed as Vice President, Development and Igal Svet as Director, Development. Reed had been Director, Nonfiction and Alternative Programming for A&E; Svet previously served as Vice President of Development for 2C Media.

Melissa Kajpust has joined Canada’s Superchannel as Head of Creative Development. Most recently, Kajpust was Director of Programming at NSI.

Visual effects company Framestore named Sophie Thiellon Executive Producer of Live Action, Lauren Merritt as New Business Manager in New York and Ashley Ford as Business Development, Integrated Advertising, in the recently opened Los Angeles office.
