and ESPN2 are giving a deeper dive into individual sports, announcing a new weekday afternoon programming lineup dedicated to the NFL, NBA, college football and MLB. Following the addition of MLB Network’s Intentional Talk this week, the schedule will eventually include a year-round edition of The Jump covering the NBA at 3p, NFL Live expanding to 90 minutes starting May 22, and College Football Live. “The fan bases of these sports – NFL, NBA, college football and Major League Baseball – are ravenous for information on a daily basis,” said Burke Magnus, ESPN executive vice president, programming and scheduling.  “These shows – with news, highlights and debate – complement our strong event coverage in each sport.  In addition, as a reflection of the consumption habits of today’s sports fan, making programming available on mobile and on demand, only makes sense.”

Speaking of ESPN, following a successful day one of the NFL Draft, numbers for the three-day affair
delivered a total live audience of 3,178,000 viewers, making it ESPN’s most-viewed draft since 2014 and the third most-viewed since the new primetime format was introduced in 2010. For the second straight year, Cleveland was the highest-rated market for ESPN’s NFL Draft, averaging a 5.4 local rating across all rounds.

Around the dial, NFL Network saw its three days of draft coverage average a 0.94 household rating and 1.5 million viewers for markups of
15%

1.9 million devices streamed 119.5 million minutes this year, up 33% and 30% respectively. Total engagements on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram were at 11.8 million over the three-day Draft period, up 15% YoY

ESPN
announced that Don Van Natta Jr. inked a new, multi-year deal to remain with the company. Van Natta joined ESPN in 2012 and will continue as a senior writer for ESPN The Magazine and ESPN.com as well as a contributor to ESPN’s award-winning Outside the Lines program. “Don represents a small group of extraordinarily talented, investigative reporters who are able to uncover important stories and then bring them to life with their writing,” said Craig Bengtson, ESPN VP & managing editor, News & Reporting. “The list of award-winning stories Don has told, on a wide range of serious topics, is long. We are thrilled to have him on our side.”

NBC Sports Group
announced plans for nearly 90 hours of live programming coverage surrounding THE PLAYERS Championship spanning May 8-14 (tournament runs May 11-14) from Ponte Vedra Beach. Golf Channel and NBC will combine to provide 22 hours of live tournament coverage complemented by more than 60 live hours of comprehensive news, analysis and other content via Golf Central Live From THE PLAYERS and Morning Drive. Production will include coverage of every vantage point of the par-3, 17th hole and its island green, with a total of nine high-definition cameras, including a microscopic lens embedded in the lip of the tiny bunker fronting the green. Meanwhile, the cable-suspended “Supra Cam,” camera system will return, with coverage also utilizing a 3D follow, along with Top Tracer technology on several holes throughout the golf course.
